Why are so many people playing gold PUGs when they clearly can't hold their own?

There is too much of a steep curve from one difficulty to another IMHO.

Randoms can be hilarious too. Like last weekend when I was playing with some low level players. They were about N7 120, Geth pulse rifle II, but at least with level 3 equipment and level 20 characters, going for Reaper Gold on Giant. I figured I'd stick around as they were really funny to listen to. I had my Turian Infiltrator on which is a pretty safe bet for at least 6 waves of soloing.
It was pretty funny to listen to them comment on my skills, as I solo'd a wave with 6 maraurders, two ravengers, two banshees and a brute, cause they started whispering to each other on the mics, except one guy, started yelling "I can't hear you guys, when you whisper!", anyways we failed on wave 9, as I got grabbed by a banshee.

Sometimes i switch it to platinum when they have waited for over 10 seconds to see if they get kicked and they ready up immediately (so its obvious they noticed the switch). Its really LOL worthy sometimes.
You can sort out the true silver -> gold players. Those are the "try til you die" types who medigel and keep going. The fakers are those who bleed out immediately

I did try though, but I don't think I will trying gold again, at least not for awhile. Maybe a month or two down the road.

Its always about the credits. For example, most of the time (~90%) after pulling a group through, the weakest ones will stay in the lobby while the stronger ones (if any) will leave. Then i wait a while but they will stick around. What will drive them away though is when i switch the difficulty to bronze, then most of them will leave. A very rare few will stick around

Couldn't agree more. I've been making the silver to gold transition over the last few weeks and everything you mention is so true. Leeching is something I've just never come across in the lower difficulties. I like the idea of changing the difficulty down in the lobby to get rid of them, especially if there are two and hence you can't kick.
Interestingly enough it's almost the opposite problem in bronze and silver where I often find high n7 and challenge point players putting on good equipment and spend the next 15 minutes literally running around searching for something to kill. They gel, use rockets etc, and would generally be an asset in any gold game. Presumably like many of the people on this forum they're tired of the gold player lottery and just want something a bit less stressful and frustrating.

It is not about the credits honestly, it's the stupid troll store as well.
I blame all this on the store....The fact that you cannot get decent weapons or decent amount of consummables you need makes players desperate, play a higher difficulty level and hope they get carried. Because the stupid store loves giving you things you have not things you need even if you buy the right pack. Say if you are low on medi-gel but high on everything else & want it you buy the JEP but the JEP gives you +10 Thermal Clip packs & only +5 Medigel or no Medigel. Say you want a reset powers card & bought SPs & PSPs but both keep on giving Cryo Ammo IV & Shield Power Cells III even though you have 40+ Cryo Ammo IV & Shield Power Cells and are unlikely to ever run out.
You see on the packs description they say "Some chance of something" or "Higher chance of something". Why dont Biower actually specify the chance ? In the game or in BSN. Change it to "10% chance of getting a character card, 5% chance of getting a ultra rare weapon, 20% chance of a Level IV ammo, 3% chance of a Reset Powers Card, 10% chance of getting Amps III, 5% chance of gear upgrade" ? Wouldn't that be better ?
I seriously that the person who desgined the store in MP is sadistic... Just saying..Because the store was obviously designed by someone who takes pleasure in watching other fail or, get annoyed, get angry, get frustrated...& as we know...Sadism = the derivation of pleasure as a result of infilcting suffering on others.

JEPs (33k) are not SPs (60k) or PSPs (99k). JEPs will ALWAYS give you 5 medigel, 5 rockets, 5 ammo clips, 5 ops packs and a bunch of equipment from level 1 to 3. The equipment slots can also hold additional 2 medigel/rockets/ammo clips/ops packs.
Due to this, there is no excuse for ever being out of any consumable other than purely greed
