I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro, 4 GB, 9600GT 512MB,  (unibody) running 10.6.2.  The game runs super smooth but I've noticed that the notebook starts to get super hot.

I'm using SMC fan control to rev the fans way up, but it still seems to pass 80 degrees celsius and higher after only brief periods of play.  I've played WoW and Bioshock on the same Macbook with high settings and its never gotten this hot.

I've tried switching from the 9600 graphics cards to the 9400, but it doesn't seem to help much (and the graphics slow way down).  Lowering the graphics setting don't seem to help much either.

Any ideas?

You need a cooling pad to help the system keep itself cool. It just doesn't have a good enough thermal design for that video card. There is one thing that may offer some respite, if the display is a decent one. Back off on the resolution, and then the video card won't have to work so hard.

The 9600m GT has a critical temperature of 105C, so if it's in the eighties, it's not a problem for the chip. It might be a problem for your legs if you game with the laptop truly in your lap, in which case one of those pads might be a good investment. Not sure what Gorath means by cooling pad though - there are both those with an external fan, but there are also those that are just a pad with some rubber things to raise it high enough. One like that should be good enough - or just play on a desk, with some erasers under the rear of the MBP to give it some lift.

Given that this is a Cider port and not native code, it's most likely due to the fact that the unoptimized Cider translations are requiring the video card to work a little harder and therefore generate more heat.

That's my best guess. Make sure while you are playing all the vents on the side are clear for air to circulate.

MacBook Pros are designed to cool through the bottom and back. They're gonna get hot on the bottom, especially around the CPU and GPU when playing games. Mine gets hot right above the F2 and F3 keys too. If it gets too hot for the hardware, it'll force itself to sleep or off. Make sure you keep it on a hard flat, surface; or if you're insisting on your lap, use a cooling pad with fans to vent the air away from it and you.

In the past, when my MBP has gotten too hot, I have placed one of those re-freezable blue ice packs beneath the computer (centered left to right, and near the back edge), with a paper towel in between in case of condensation. The aluminum case has good thermal conductivity, and my computer typically cools down quite rapidly. I have never seen enough condensation to make me worry about moisture damage, but your mileage may vary. I now have two of them, and I cycle them while playing DA: O.

There is not much you can do. My opinion, get an external keyboard and try to ignore the heat. The computer won't get damaged, it will freeze and shut itself down before any damage is done. I ran the game on bootcamp and it gets pretty hot especially during the summer.

Partly correct about the unoptimized code but PC users like me already have this problem wherein CPU usage is at 100% which means it gets hot easily when playing DA, not only that, GPU and even memory are working extra hard for this game which I never encountered even on Crysis with high settings.

Barely a month ago, I changed my cpu cooler because the fan that came with my cpu was so loud when playing DA, I discovered that it was spinning at an alarming 5000 rpm which means that it is hot. I felt that if it goes that way all the time when playing DA there is a danger perhaps of the fan disintegrating and damaging my mainboard, ram, and gpu.

I went through the entire game with a MacBook Pro 15 and Boot Camp - and it did indeed run pretty warm. But no big issues at all, ran well. I've got the Mac version as well now and it seems pretty much the same.

Yeah I'm running it on a Macbook Pro 2.53 GHz with 4GB of Ram & the 256mb 9400M card. It's running at 90% cpu constantly regardless of the graphics settings, and sending the CPU up to 90 degrees.

I've been reading about the CPU issues on the PC versions and am thinking the same applies to the Mac versions of this game, as I've ran other games like CoD 4 without these resources getting hammered like this.

Update: I installed SMC Fan Control and cranked the fans up to 5000 rpm & this has cooled the system by at least 10 degrees celsius down to a manageable 80 degrees.  No more choppiness. :wizard:
