Apparently it was well-known among some people, but I've just learned that Text Chat is actually accessible in the PC version of Mass Effect 3!

I'm so disappointed, Bioware.
We were told that "we'll ask if it's possible", but there was never an actual response.
Yet, it was in the game.
It was in the game since the demo.

There is a thread, created last Thursday, that is at least 100 years old about text chat. You could have posted there, you know.

Theres plenty of topics on this. Some are months old about modding files to do this.

Yes, but as the first person in the thread said: I'm not touching it until BW gives all clear.

Maybe it will come out in the next patch or DLC. Who knows whats possible. Who to say they don't have one working in house at this moment.

I won't get banned for using it right?  Also can anyone see the text chat in game or just yourself?

Come on BW! We need our "you won't get banned for using this" and a "Clever use of coding mechanics".

No, this is not right. You gain advantage over console players, that can't textchat. This is against the rules of commu sportsmanship.

I am not a good talker on the mic and some people can't understand my mumbled english, so a quick text message would help a lot for a clear attempt of communicating that can't be misunderstood, still ... 3sec only can be missed to see in the heat of a fight.

I don't think BW will support this, as accessing the console commands can lead to big cheating issues (can kill/revive other players, can pause the game, etc...).

Hopefully they will support this, honestly if you wanted to abuse console commands, people can already do this through bindings and most of the bindings that would be unfair(give weapons or medigel) are deactivated in multiplayer so I don't think it would be a problem. Supporting from BW would let us talk through console, or at the very least, make lines like, "25 seconds left, Get to the Extraction Zone" or "Don't revive me, I'm going to gel, just stagger or lead them away please."

I lol'd, but I think chat is disabled on purpose to discourage bad manners in games... Anyway I'd appreciate chat in lobby rather than in-game.

We already have an advantage over console players... hell I wouldn't even call what they do "playing".

...which you get banned for

“Tier One” offences[...] will usually result in a ME3 MP ban.

This includes but is not limited to:
- Credit exploitation via host migration
- INI editing to increase your personal performance
- Illegitimate weapon/character/consumable/etc. rank
- Recruiting for credit exploitation via host migration
- Item “x” exploitation

“Tier Three” offences are those that immediately affect other players but do not grant the cheater any unfair advantage.

This includes but is not limited to:
- Leeching credits/experience
- Griefing

[...]
If your modified SP “ini” effects MP in a way that gains you an unfair advantage then you are breaking the rules.[...]

We need a statement about text chat giving us an unfair advantage AND if we are actually allowed to mess with the files to get the chat working.

In the end text chat is allowed but messing with the files to get it is not which prevents us from using it?

Judging from the rules general approach as long as we do not gain anything that is connected to the leaderboard it might be OK to use.

On a side-note:
According to the Rules gaining illegal Challenge Points is not ban-able unless considered (N7) leaderboard exploitation.
This oughta be updated or clarified.

Which bad manners? Passing URLs? Because I've heard more swearing from mic than I possibly could see from textchat. This is like cutting hands to everyone, because most of crime comes that way. Another thing is you can censor chat with mechanics similar to BSN, where some offensive words as names from history and such are changed into ****. Lack of textchat is rather discouraging people to communicate, but the problem is PC exclusive, so who gives a frack? Less coding and debugging.

Except those commands don't work in multiplayer because of cheat manager.
