this game is so fast, when would you ever have time to type something without getting shot down or grabbed or geth bomer bombed? If on gold I stand around more than 5 seconds in the same spot i get reminded that i shoulda kept moving by my barrier failing. or a brute running me over. or a scion blowing me into next week. or... you get the point

also you're watching the enemy in front of you. the damage direction indicator to see if somethings shooting you from elsewhere, you barrier/shields/health bar, your clip, your spare ammo, your teammates, the objective timer, your cooldown and now you wanna read what someone just typed as well? and think about wether to reply or not? and if so what to say and how?

tl;dr - i don't think text chat is practical in this kind of fast paced game. mics are fine, this is a non issue for me.

If people can use text chat in CS and BF, both of which are waaaay more fast paced than ME3, I don't think the problem is practicality. It's just BioWare that for some unknown reason decided to not implement it.

Any chances to add it?
Or a at least a button asking for help.

You can turn off voice chat anytime in the options. Developers rarely make text chat optional in games. (except mmos of course)

Well, I guess it's good we finally get confirmation that this is not being worked on. Kinda disappointing to see another feature dropped due to the cross-platform nature of the game.

Pretty please, Bioware.

That text is tiny and barely noticeable and it supports only one line at a time. It's a fail. We'd need something a lot better than that.

Don't project your own limitations and lack of imagination onto the rest of us.  Thank you.

That's because text chat isn't nearly as intrusive as voice chat, especially with limits like one message every 5-10 seconds in place.

It's hard to spot that little gem there, isn't it. I was actually talking about me and not "the rest of us".
However I congratulate you for your lack of limitations and imagination. U rock.

But... But it's right there. You just have to make it be available without having to alter the EXE of the game with a hex editor. Why is it not supported???

Because it isn't all there, that is all I will say on the matter

IIRC the text chat can also be used as the developer console with the Unreal engine. It's already pretty easy to cheat by modifying files and hosting your own games, so they probably just disabled text chat entirely rather than allow hosts to have access to the console without modifying files.

Bioware is great at a lot of things, but this is one ugly blemish that is very difficult to forgive for its lack of logic

Well, Bryan told me in PM that it is a possibly bannable offense in terms of client modification, and this ban is possibly permanent.

Possibly.

Just drop the issue then. We are not getting text chat, period.

No, this is not right. You gain advantage over console players, that can't textchat. This is against the rules of commu sportsmanship.

We already have an advantage over console players... hell I wouldn't even call what they do "playing".

A few hundred hours of playtime on my manifest says otherwise.

I'd say it's the other way round. I wouldn't describe what PC players do as "playing," not half of the ones on BSN at any rate. I'd call it "taking themselves really seriously and then disconnecting halfway through wave 9."

Honestly! "My teammates are rubbish," "PC Master Race," all that dancing - just enjoy the game! It's fun. Stop making it look like work. It doesn't matter if your teammate's twelve years old and doesn't really know what a gun is. That's part of it.
