I know I'm well late to the party, but I just finished DAO for the first time,
Damn, credit where it's due. What an absolutely fantastic game! Easily in my top 5 of all time.
After playing that I can now understand why people didn't like DA2 as much. seriously though BioWare, you'll probably never read this being all busy in the DA3 board.
But thank you very much for this experience.
Even though it wasn't sad, I teared up at the end, it was just beautiful.
And a sign that games don't have to force the emotion on you and crush you into peices with it like another certain BioWare game...
This game did it beautifully. You have the choice. Well done.
Congratulations

Yep. Although I wasn't a fan of the out-of-campaign DLC or Awakening, Origins itself was absolutely wonderful. Still amongst my favorite games of all time.

Yes, I'm considering whether to play through the additional dlc's still. The companion ones seem very interesting for background information. Not so sure about Awakenings though..
I'm still surprised it had that much of an effect on me though, I got really emotional lol. Would love to go into detail but ^^^^^^^^^ No spoilers section

The only DLCs I can recommend are the Stone Prisoner (Shale is worth it, if you didn't get her through promo code), Return to Ostagar and the Warden's Keep. The others aren't very good, in my opinion, although the Feastday gifts can be entertaining.

This.
Play the in-campaign DLC and ignore the rest.

Even Witch Hunt, Leliana's Song and Awakenings?

If you bought the ultimate edition you may as well play them all. Except awakening they only take 1-2 hours each. Awakening is like 10-15 hours, but the difficulty is about the same as mowing down mobs in the final battle.

Leliana's Song....eh....as a fan of Leliana, you might like it. I'm a big Leliana fan and I did not. In my opinion, it messes a bit with the relationship between Leliana and the Warden, and you have to question a lot of what Leliana has told you in the past.
I absolutely hated Awakenings and Witch Hunt. I cannot give you a single positive out of my experiences with them.
Witch Hunt is completely insufficient unless you are a male Warden who romanced Morrigan. Once it was over, I questioned why on earth I bothered to play it as it answered nothing and embellished nothing, and I felt betrayed both as a player and as my Warden.
Awakenings...destroyed my love of Ferelden. There's no nicer way to put that. I have not returned to Dragon Age since, despite my fondness for it. One day, I will, but Awakenings will not be a part of it ever again.

I think Witch Hunt works best if you romanced Morrigan

I enjoyed, Leliana's Song, Awakening(this one is a bit buggy in some regards, but Anders and the other warden recruits are very enjoyable), Stone Prisoner, Return to Ostagar and the Warden's Keep. Witch Hunt basically reuses maps from Dalish Elf Origin, Stone Prisoner, and Awakening, it's fun to get the to see Morrigan again but that's not till the last few minutes of the DLC and the answers she provides are pretty damned vague. Honestly it feels a bit lazy, though I didn't mind the Magi Circle investigation portion, a few funny easter eggs hidden in the books there.
For Witch Hunt you really have to ask yourself if Morrigan is worth it though, you get the most out of it if you romanced here otherwise it's fairly inconsequential.
Golems of Amgarrak and Darkspawn chronicles you can certainly pass.

Witch hunt is a joke. You chase Morrigan to a mirror and in the end you have none of your questions answered. Leliana's Song is boring. Awakenings...I'm sorta neutral, I think I dislike it because I miss your old companions, you only retain Oghren, and that wasn't enough for me.

Never played any of the additional DLC (Leliana, witch hunt etc.) Just the stuff that came with the digital deluxe when I bought it, wardens keep and Stone prisoner. Those are totally worth playing imo.
Awakening I couldn't even play past the first half hour, it completely ruined everything I liked about my warden's story from Origins. Hated it, put it down and haven't even considered going back since. To this day it's one of my biggest Steam purchase regrets.

I adore Shale, so Stone Prisoner is a top contender to me. Warden's Keep is amusing, and has some nice loot, but it's what you get after completing it that makes it worthwhile....at least IMO. Return To Ostagar, to me, is "ok". It works quite well IF you go in with the "right" party members. Beyond that, just a bit of decent loot.
I don't despise Awakenings, but I sort of play it like a "Stand-alone". This way, I don't have to view it in continuity, and can just enjoy a few new companions, and see an interesting new antagonist. Golems and Witch Hunt do nothing for me. Leliana's Song I only played once to "unlock" the goody.....that is good enough for me. And finally Darkspawn Chronicles.......nah. I admit, I won't even play it. The AU of it, just holds no appeal to me.

I found Witch Hunt excellent closure for a Dalish Warden. But it was much more fun with that Origin than it was with, say, my Cousland.
