Does anyone know if its possible for a Cousland daughter to take the throne herself?

I would suspect an unhardened Alistair is required, declare you will rule with him, kill Loghain, deny Morrigan the ritual and then have Alistair kill the Archdemon. That's the plan anyway. Can anyone tell me if  it works?

Also is it possible to rule with an unhardened Alistair (regardless of circumstances above), and maintain a romance with Leliana? Or is this only possible if both Alistair and Leliana are hardened?

Uh, no. If Alistair is dead, Anora becomes queen anyway. Do Morrigan's ritual, don't harden Alistair, marry him, and become his Chancellor. You will rule in all but name.

Right yes. I realised the flaw in the plan: Anora can't be killed. When Alistair sends her to the tower he actually says something like "If I die fighting the blight you will be Queen. Someone has to take this seriously." Or words to that effect.

You can do a 'political' marriage with Alistair (that is, no romance) and still keep a hardened Leliana as your mistress if you make the arrangements at the landsmeet then do NOT speak with Leliana afterward except during the Post Coronation party at the end of the game.  Leliana is bugged in that she will break off the romance if you are going to marry either Alistair or Anora, even if it is just political, though it was intended that hardened Leliana would be amenable to a mistress situation in the case of a political (only) union.

I am unsure if Alistair must be hardened or kept unhardened to make this work.  An unhardened Alistair doesn't want to be king and is perfect for an ambitious warden to sieze control with him as their puppet king.

Alistair doesn't have to be hardened unless he and the warden are hostile -- unhardened Alistair won't marry an hostile warden though hardened Alistair can be persuaded in seeing the sense of the match. The warden's coercion has to be higher, though, for an unhardened Alistair, at all other approval levels.

There are a couple of mods out there that fix Leliana, including mine (ZDF Dialog Fix). Otherwise, sylvanaerie is correct -- the wrong dialog triggers for a hardened Leliana and the dumping happens anyway.
