Then why do advertisers advertise to people as if they're all the same? There are no common threads to appeal to?

They'll apply to certain human nature that is unavoidable. I never said there wasn't constants for humans, just not for gender that is behaviour based.

There is no nature you can say "Most Women are like this" or "Most Men are like this" for within our society(I suppose this statement is sort of reliant on people being in North America), much less the entire world. Maybe within certain societies you could have a much easier time with it based on which society you picked, certainly if you were going off a few historical civilizations.

How little you know if you claim there are no biological behavourial universals. How little you know...:?

Considering history, I would say that you know very little my dear Stardusk.

It is possible to get behavourial universals, but only if your society forces them on people. not because they are biological.

But I'm up for some debating before this gets locked so please, enlighten me.

Looking at the first and last page - seems like an amusing thread. Will read when I have more time.

On the topic of genders - women seem to be vastly outnumbered. But appear to be well represented.
In my experience I find 9/10 females to be decent/good players.

No point in making accusations of who said what. Stop hijacking the thread and walk away. People, snap out of it.

I know, it was a good idea of a thread. Too bad we all hate each other for some reason.

Ahah. So, it is all society? We can speak of civilisation of sorts for 10,000 or so years, we can speak of biology for over 3 billion years. And you say social convention trumps biology?  Have you thought about the possibility that social convention is merely informed by base biological drives?

Put down your shining armour, listen to Stardusk for longer than it takes to come up with some passive-agressive insult and maybe look into the matter of male and female social interaction a little afterwards.

If you're still not convinced, then you've lost a little time and nothing else.

Enough with the stats, they don't ****ing matter. The real world isn't numbers, it's people. And "more likely" doesn't mean anything either. If I run out of Mountain Dew, I'm more likely to go buy more, but that doesn't mean I will.

If statistics are meaningless (according to you), what is their purpose? Why produce them at all?

Cyonan wrote...

I hate to be the one to break it to
you(actually I don't), but we're so different from person to person, to
say nothing of from society to society, that you will not actually find
any one "nature" that can apply to the majority of men or women.

The research into human behavior, how our evolution/ancestry affect it, the development of relationships, sexuality, procreation, etc., is actually at a pretty fascinating place.  To disregard the shared biological elements of our behavior is akin to walking around blindfolded.

That said, what I've seen of Stardusk's conclusions, they aren't supported by the data, mostly because no real conclusions are supported yet.  We live in a society where are cultural norms are often in direct opposition to biological drives, creating massive conflicts (both personal and on a societal scale).  There are huge gaps in our knowledge about behavior.  While the research is interesting, there is so much unknown, and so much static created by these conflicts, that few concrete conclusions can be drawn.

I do not believe, based on my experience, that people, either male or female, wish to experience the truth. People needs certain illusions and the realisation that we are simply animals conforming to highly predictable patterns of reproduction is a bit much for people.
