Next time you spend an hour or two watching TV... try counting the common themes between commercials, how women are typically portrayed, how men are typically portrayed, how kids are typically portrayed, how older folk are portrayed... tell me if you don't see some themes running pretty constant as to how each of these groups are portrayed in commercials. Which characters in commercials are portrayed in the best light, which ones are not?

The characters portrayed in the best light are expected to be symapthetic to the people that will be purchasing things, right? That would be the point of the ad I imagine. Sure, they could sell some things appealing to a group's sense of inadequacy, but empowerment would seem to be a better way to sell more things given the choice of the two, right?

So who are advertisers kissing up to, and who do they not really care to impress?

I don't need to watch TV to tell you that there will be certain running themes. Advertisers will try to pick out common things among their target market and often play off societal nature.

For example, go on YouTube and look up Japanese commercials. I don't imagine it matters which one all the ones I've seen are a fine enough example. I bet most of the people on these forums would find them really weird, but if things are constant and advertisers are all playing off that, why do we not buy into it? Because it's based on Japanese societal nature.

I need only to look to the past. History shows far too much variance in behaviour based on which society or civilization you pick.

Too many things influence our behaviour from our past experiences to the society we are living in to be able to say "Most men in the world will act like this". We can only say "Most humans will act like this" for certain things.

I'm pretty sure that Japanese commercials and Chinese commercials have themes in common with American and European commercials. It's probably more obvious in American and European commercials, and more tactfully understated in Japanese and Chinese commercials... but still the same themes.

Well, we all know what the largest consumer demographic is worldwide...now don't we.

Vanity is empowering in it's own way, yes. Is it a 'good' empowerment? An 'effective' one? That all depends.

Wow, so all these gratuituous shots of Megan Fox's butt in that giant robot movie were put there to pander to me?

I am more interested as to why you are speechless. I still don't understand. Of course women experience 'romantic love' and do not the idenftify it on the basis of male utility but women select mates that can provide them with a benefit, usually a concrete one.

There are so many examples of why that is just straight up bull****.

Okay, then the complaint about men being portrayed as idiots in commercials is also moot. They are portrayed that way to appeal to men too, just in different ways.

Oh god how can you be so naive.

They were there so that you could be sexually aroused looking at her. They weren't there for any other f*^*¨Ç reason whatsoever.

I didn't realise there were as many buttshots as there was a cleavage shot. Nonetheless, the movie wasn't selling you anything. I doubt females were the target audience of Transformers. That being said, the whole line of 'the girl' being a bigger prize than 'saving the world' yes, that was likely there to appeal to your vanity. ;)

(the last part is not an honest accusation of you're being vain, even if you think this song is about you, don't you, don't you?)

Try an example from a commercial. It's more pertinent to what's being discussed. Victoria Secret commercials are not there to get women to buy things for men, but to get men to buy things for women.

I'll agree with the first point. I'll plead the 'I'm not the director, so I can't honestly respond' to the second.

haha yeah, plus the way you post.

I have been told that the way I type makes it seem like I'm a girl.

I'm also told that I'm a rather weird person IRL, so it's all probably just par for the course really.

Yip, you've got to stop typing with your (man) boobs. It's a dead giveaway and leads to typos. Type with your dick instead. It's got to be easier to make sure you only hit one key at a time. :innocent:   Alternatively, use the following advice.

Ways to make sure people realise you're a REAL MAN:

1: In any thread mentioning girls, females, women or femshep: spam post off topic crap to get it derailed. No self respecting epeen would let a few girls have a conversation without egotestically interrupting them.

2: Also post at least one sexist joke that the dinosaurs thought was lame. Nothing like starting a flame war by being an offensive wanker and then saying "girls can't take a joke" to show everyone 'YOU'RE A REAL MAN'!

3: If the thread is requesting something that begins with "fem" ensure you say "NO" even if you have no reason, no brain, and couldn't actually give a flying f*ck in the first place.

4: If the thread hits 10 pages and has not yet turned into a brofist fest, use any and all means necessary to ensure the thread becomes a gender war.

There's an example or two in this thread already, but once the Americans wake up, this thread'll hit 20 pages of off topic BS no problem.

/sarcasm :innocent:

Tho while I have your attention Cyonan, thanks for all the work you do for the community. You're one of the reasons to visit BSN.

OT: I occasionally post and even started a thread once! It was a nice simple thread and went to 16 pages without a single epeen or idiotic comment. I think that's an achievement on BSN.

Have fun :)

EDIT: I see my rules are somewhat outdated. 7 pages seems to be the limit, not 10. :o

It's not like I was wrong is it? I just underestimated how mad it would all get. As Stardusk would say: You can't take the truth.

That's lingerie. Transformers was a movie about giant robots.

And how the hell is Megan Fox's character appealing to my, or any woman's vanity? She's a freaking joke! She's just a sexy model on which Michael Bay glued some traits like "she's a mechanic" and... "action chick" or whatever, I don't remember her that well.

I celebrate that she's not passive, like so many female characters in hollywood used to be. But that does not compensate for the fact that, first and foremost, she is a sexual thing. The most important thing about her, it's that she's sexy. All the rest comes after that.

It's the reason female politicians have their appearance judged, despite the fact that they are not freaking meant to appeal to anyone's eyes. But society does this, men and women, because it's ingrained in our minds that, even if her job does not call for it, a woman has to be sexually attractive.

I'm offended that you think that I'm easily offended. And I'm not easy to offend.

Also, what abuot the masculine influence on women? They're getting more stubborn and less likely to admit when they need help.

Ahhh... good this ground was covered already.

1. The reason men are portrayed as stupid is to make women feel like they should be more demanding of their men to make more purchases.

2. The reason men are portrayed as stupid is to make men feel like they should be more receptive to those demands.

It's different ways, but to the same end... 'Let the womenz get more stuffs you stoopid man!'
