Try an example from a commercial. It's more pertinent to what's being discussed. Victoria Secret commercials are not there to get women to buy things for men, but to get men to buy things for women.
That's lingerie. Transformers was a movie about giant robots.
And how the hell is Megan Fox's character appealing to my, or any woman's vanity? She's a freaking joke! She's just a sexy model on which Michael Bay glued some traits like "she's a mechanic" and... "action chick" or whatever, I don't remember her that well.
I celebrate that she's not passive, like so many female characters in hollywood used to be. But that does not compensate for the fact that, first and foremost, she is a sexual thing. The most important thing about her, it's that she's sexy. All the rest comes after that.
It's the reason female politicians have their appearance judged, despite the fact that they are not freaking meant to appeal to anyone's eyes. But society does this, men and women, because it's ingrained in our minds that, even if her job does not call for it, a woman has to be sexually attractive.
Both sexes do this, as Stardusk previously stated... just in different ways. Men find certian appearances more respectful, appealing etc. Women find certian appearances more respectful, appealing, etc. Everyone either tries to live up to the image or disregard it, but the expectation is something both sexes have to contend with. What I mean to say, is that you shouldn't take it personally.
The most important thing about a male character is what? The popular answer is 'funny'. But the actual behavior says something different.
Of course a female in a movie is someone that we're interacting with for what, two hours tops? They're are different things wanted from a female that you know for two hours, than one you know longer than that. You shouldn't take the two hour expectation personally if you're interacting with people for more than two hours.
