1. Clingy, no thank you. Overweight? If she has a great personality, why not?
2. If she accepts my female PC as the 'father', then bring it on. I'm gonna be the best dad they could hope for.
3. Depends on the disability. But I'm generally not against it.

It'd actually be nice to have a very unusual LI for once.

One who can make me laugh and have separate personalities.

I'd really like my alignment to make a difference, but don't expect that because we are currently in a everyone should love my character universe. But mostly make me laugh. Have confidence, don't always agree with my character. It is possible to love someone and not always agree with them. Alistair did a great job making me smile. Actually BW usually has at least one who can do this. .

Yep, I wasn´t kidding.

I would add also a horrible scarred woman who is insecure of her looks. Great personality comes with all of the options.

pretty much agree with BlackRising
Anyone who is pathetically dependent on the pc would be a major irritant and turn-off
-so no to the clinging woman.
on the disabilities- it would depend how capable she is with coping with the disabilities (and as it's a fantasy setting there is the possibility of a supernatural disability which would depend a lot on the details).
And in the case of the single mother you have the question of how dependent thechildren are (though it's more forgivable from children)..let's see..last week I rescued one from ogres, this week a different one has been abducted by bloodmages...
Hard to give definite answers based on vague examples especially as I roleplay and my character doesn't exist yet

I've played To the Moon recently. I'm dying for a romance with someone like River! Please BioWare she's such an awesome person. I'm not a romantic; though I love romances for what they are. But River? Damn that game! Made the man tears come out again.

I'm curious by what people mean when they say they want the LI to have a "great personality". It's a very vague description that tells us nothing about what they want the character to actually be like.

I think Morrigan and Liara both have "great personalities", for example, but they couldn't be more different.

That's because it's a hard thing to define.
There are so many aspects that make up personality - little ticks, oddities and whathaveyou - that personally, I couldn't really tell you what a 'great personality' is unless you show me a specific character and ask me whether I think they have a great personality.
Not to mention that voice, the way they hold themselves...etc. often adds to personality and is another thing to consider.

Alistair. Enough said. LOL
Handsome, funny, quirky...just loveable...a gentleman...haha Sweet! and Intelligent. aaaand can hold a conversation. I am not one of those girls that has a huge list of what they expect in a guy. Love comes when you least expect it! Why force the issue of love? It should come naturally. You get to love someone for their strengths and flaws. It you begin to find that person beautiful and you appreciate their company. Also, they have to be ambitious. I want us to always be striving for better.
Ahhh...love is special. My boyfriend broke up with me after 2 years. It's been 6 months since he did...but I love him still. I want him back...but alas...I cannot force the issue. I try to find ways to get him back xD But people are like 'OMG that was a waste of time then". NO it was a period in my life that I would never take back.

Love and peace to all!

oh my...what would i want in an LI?

simple...or rather:

not simple :D because i want an independent, opinionate, female that argues her point but does not hate you if you do not agree with her (meaning she is no **** with entitlement issues)

i imagine her personality along the lines of morrigan (without being unnecessarily rude all the time, but not backing down easily either) mixed with isabella and a pinch of wynn (without her trust in the chantry and the circle system of course)

there would be bonus points if she is a mage (and even better: a tevinter magister that likes the empire but is not afraid to admit its faults either!) it might be cool if she was an elf, too (because an elf in a real position of power would have something)

even more bonus points if she has a really good back-story like say (if the pulled it of to make her an elf):

she was the keepers first of a clan of elves and the clan was slaughtered (with very few survivors) and she was pursued (maybe by templars who thought she was easy prey?) and had no choice but to leave the rest of her clan behind and run to tevinter, where as a mage (all keepers are mages!) and a strong one at that, she got in the tevinter circle of magi and trained with the goal of becoming a magister in mind, learning blood magic etc. (hell tevinter must be a treasure trove of magical knowledge for someone hell bent on learning) with revenge/vengeance in mind (her personel quests could deal with firstly finding out who attacked the clan in the first place (and had the power to bring templars along!), finding out which templars were involved (for taking revenge, which a moraly good character could talk her out of for example if say one of the templars remembers and is shamed by his/her actions and wants to attone) and in the end finding out that there are other survivors (she left in a hurry, because of the templars and her unfinished training (leaving her unable to fight them) - so she did not know what happened to the survivors of the slaughter) and helping them out (maybe having to liberate them from an enemy stronghold first?)

or, if she was not an elf, then maybe our female magister could either be:

from a disgraced tevinter family and trying to return to grace (that would make for a nice questline, too - finding out who betrayed them, learning of their weaknesses etc. and finally revenge)

or:

an ex slave (would work with elf, too of course) who is thankfull for her magic and the chance to become a magister in the first place (while also aware of the tevinter empires flaws as an ex-slave and all of that) and needs help keeping herself alive (she might have powerfull enemies!) and keeping her position :)

greetings LAX

First of all - great question!

Overall, as a straight woman, first and foremost I am looking for CHOICE!!!!!

My problem with the Bioware romances is that if you are a straight female your choices are very limited and most likely have major issues (Fenris and Anders, this means you) or they are not exactly masculine (Zevran - sorry to all you Zevran lovers out there). Here are my favorites in games played so far:

Alistair
Thane
Casavir (going back a ways - Neverwinter Nights)

I guess Kaidan was okay but let's face it, he was kind of a weenie sometimes.

Details:
1.  I liked Alistair very much; he was funny, he was disarming, he was cute, I liked the dialogue with him, and his character grew throughout the game.  He was a man by the end, and a king.
2.  I liked Thane very much as well.  He was interesting.  His dialogue was interesting.  He was mature and concerned about me.  His outlook on life changed a bit through his relationship with you.  I will admit that the fact that his fate was obviously going to be tragic was a draw as well - it's annoying to admit it but it is true.  Finally - his VOICE was AMAZING.  Who could resist? Image IPB
3.  Casavir was a little different thing.  He was very masculine.  He was very proper.  It took a lot of doing to get him to admit he was interested.  It was really the first game I had played that had a romance available.  Plus I was much younger then and I think his overall "manliness" was a big deal to me.

The type of LI I am looking for is 1) male; 2) without any really major mood-altering issues (Fenris was so surly sometimes); 3) masculine; 4) someone whose character grows over time (don't we all in real life); and 5) someone capable of defending themselves adequately enough to be brought along most missions/quests, which could open up some extra dialog options if Bioware does things right.

@medusa_hair - YES. CHOICE. A thing that seemed to matter so little in ME3 in the 'straight female romance'-department. Poor Thane. Poor Jacob.

I don't particularly care what he looks like, as long as his voice actor is amazing. That counts for a lot when you're romancing pixels. That said, my top Bioware romances are Garrus, Alistair & Fenris.

I'm currently reading Dragon Age: Asunder and I'm very interested in the character of Cole, who I believe is rumored ot be a companion in DA:I, but I have no idea if they would make him romanceable considering his...situation. Even though Anders turned me off as a LI in DA2, my pupils still dilate over a good 'ol woobie character,

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Cullen the one in the mage tower who actually became speechless and ran away if you came on to him?   That's a little too naive for me, I think.  He was cute though.

To be fair Anders was very unusual mainly because it wasn't just him you were in a relationship with. Due to his DA2 situation I kind of felt weird getting into a relationship with him. He needed a little help and in a way he was similar to someone who was mentally ill, but the situation was even more complicated than that.

A woman who isn't hideous and is actually interesting unlike the ones in DA2. It's sad that Varric was the most romance worthy character in that game.

I love drama in a character's story, it makes the romance more involved with the plot. The problem with Fenris and Anders drama though is they were fanatical on each side, and it is really hard to empathize with any fanatic. Many people are calling Cullen as a romance and I agree, because in the past, his drama suits well with the story. He was attacked at the tower, and hated mages, but still came to their defense a little in Dragon Age 2. Conflicted. And a person on either side of the debate can swerve his beliefs.

One reason I loved Garrus, and wanted to Romance him since the first game, was he was a little bit a protege, in a way you guide his beliefs, which shows how he reacts to you in his sidequest in 2 and he is a Shepard to the Turians in 3. Befriending him or not there is a story there.

Jack was a great romance for the same reason, the relationship seems to change and you help them grow as characters, OR they help you. Jack was a character with her own goals, own values, and romancing her was helping her character and let you see insight. Zevran is a bit like this, and in a way so is Leliana and Alistair, but less so. You can harden them or make them face their past, but after that it runs out of smoke.

Garrus has no past but he seems to grow with the relationship, and Jack is the best romance I think Bioware ever put out. Anders and Fenris had issues but they had nothing to do but hate each other and be fanatical. Both had reasons to be, but so hard to empathize. Merrill had one, but it also was fanatical and she seemed oblivious to any romance til the end when it was either be cruel to her or sleep with her. Isabela was a great idea but she had a sad past that didnt mean anything. Over ten years none of them changed, on their own or with you. It seemed so lacking as a romance. They dont have to be better or more like you, they can be more antagonistic, which is why I love friendship/rivalry but they certainly dont need to be so static that even fellow characters find it annoying. 10 years is a long time, but each was as fanatical about their goals as everyone else.

I would have loved for Merrill and Hawke to have a romantic scene beforehand, and show that Merrill questions it more with a rivalry or even do the quest anyway by a fellow elf but convince her out of it and she could see her folly, or keep it and show she has something to her character than just the eluvian and being Dalish. Or make the Dalish parts of her more pronounced in a romance. Like courting in a Dalish way, or even wondering and comparing her life without a cluless steak of not knowing when someone was attacked, as someone who goes out with Hawke it seemed strange she didnt know that being mugged is bad.

Fenris was great in his off moments, and there was something with his memories and the silver. More about his old life, or trying to settle, but every conversation had at least one thing about denarius. He had good reason, but it felt so pale when it was the only thing that defined him.

Anders is such a fanatic he blows up a building and his personality gets rewritten. Such is fine, but something more than just pro mage stuff every sentance. It was hard.

Sebastian wasnt so bad, he was for the Maker, but he was pulled between two sides, and pretty relaxed overall. By far my favorite romance.

Isabela was alright but once again her life was more a caricature than a real person. My second favorite due to her fun nature and at least not being overly obsessed with something.

As for me; my favorite romance would be someone with their own problems but ones that dont define them. Anger issues, dethroned, disinherited for good reason from a non noble family, Too Prideful like Nathaniel not Vellana, Lost siblings, Getting an important position, easily possessed by spirits, guardian over an important item. And other character traits that have nothing to do with it. Like- bad at jokes but tries anyway, family person, easily depressed (but not about their problem alone like Anders and Fenris), religious, can't get them down, someone who enjoys politics, poor as dirt, rich as kings, rude, too polite, kind, anything really, if their traits war with each other all the better, which is what I hope Cullen will be. Someone who wants everyone saved or everyone dead isnt nearly as fun as some need to die, but these people don't deserve it.

I would like a pro Templar Mage who worries because they are easily possessed and rely on the templars protection from blood magic, OR a pro Mage Templar who realizes that they might have killed out of hand and bears it as a mark against themselves. Ones you can influence in either direction for good or ill. Protect the Pro Templar and make them realize that they need to be strong for themselves, or teach them that with their help they can build a less oppressive circle that benefits the mages for their protection. Pretty American.

Or show the pro mage that guilt should not lead their lives, and that they did it for the greater good, show mercy to those who have a great burden, but do not let them take over and let power best them. OR let their mercy create an age that will free the mages of burden

Depends on my PC, really. I enjoy romancing characters that provide a good foil to my protagonist. In DAO, that was Alistair. In DA2, Fenris. In ME, Garrus. I like them all a lot for different reasons, mostly having to do with how I characterized my protagonist in each game. So as long as there are a number of options available to me in both how I can play my PC and which characters I can romance, with varying personalities, strengths and flaws, I'll be happy.

This is sad, but there was never a love interest in any game, that I ever played, that I completely liked, and that I would REALLY like to romance if I was actually walking in the shoes of my character.

The two characters that came closest to what I would like to romance were Qara from NWN2, and Morinth from ME2, and both weren't a romance option. In other words - powerful, fearless, confident, sexy, actually loyal once you get close to them and generally chaotic neutral kind of characters.

I always hope for the best, maybe one of these will show up in the future game.

Jack?
