^to the quote above:

Qara isn't really loyal. She stays with the person, who is against Sand and his people. That's why she will betray you at the end if Sand sides with you.

I prefer to see love interest characters who develop through the relationship with my PC, and who give me opportunities to stop and think about what my character would do.

One thing I realized about the LIs in DA:2 is that they are all "broken" in their own ways, and the option to friendmance or rivalmance each is a great way to explore that brokenness and to help them grow through it. The friend/rival dynamic helps to keep romance from being cookie-cutter - there are many different ways to fall in love with someone, and it's good to allow for different dynamics for better storytelling, whether it is "Aw, we think totally alike! *smooch*" or "You drive me nuts! *hatesex*".

I was really emotionally hit when I finished the romance with Anders on my first playthrough, for example, and I berated myself for not "waiting" on Fenris earlier (I hadn't read guides on how his romance went, so I honestly thought he left me). Each time I saw the Amell favor on him, I felt guilty. On a whim, my PC on second playthrough had a fling with Isabella, and I was impressed to see how her character came out in more depth afterwards; she uses sex as a way to literally "feel out" people, which is fascinating.

I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Alistair's love story; it really brought out another side of his character to go through the romance dance with him and made later game decisions important not just for Ferelden but for him as a character (do you tell him to marry for politics or let him follow his heart?).

well i got something else:

i would like a love interest that is - at the start (after meeting her for the first time) - dependent on the player (like say you rescue a lone mage-apprentice (not fully trained) from a group of templars and then help her/him out further, like taking them with you, making her/him your apprentice (or letting one of your companions train her/him of you are not the right class (no mage, in my example) yourself) and training her/him up (even sending them on missions, rewarding or punishing them based on their dealings etc. thus a character that fully reacts to you (in a way like our turian friend from mass effect - just a step further)...and after finishing his/her apprentice-ship/training (when they are no longer dependent) you could have the option of romance? that would be wounderfull :)

even more if it really involved sending the apprentice and missions alone, having them take responsibilities etc. (the player would of course control the apprentice during those missions - which would make for interesting shifts in perspective, say from respected inquisitor to inquisitor in training without that much respect, power etc. ;) it would also open up a wider perspective in the game, as it would show that not only the things your PC is directly involved in are happening but that there are other things happening at different places at the same time (and this way you could see and experience both) which would make for interesting story telling :)

greetings LAX
ps: one more idea: i would want a mage (girl if possible as i am a straight male - also i love to play out girl/girl or girl/male romances, too (i love to play characters of the opposite gender, it is just cool sometimes, because i love male acting women and my character would very often be the ideal love interest for me!)...just can't get around to male/male stuff and not because i hate gay-people!) with the attitude of kira knightly in pirates of the carribian (with the story progression - her being a little meek at the start and then gaining a healthy self confidence coupled with an attitude :)
pps: still i would never romance alistair again, not after he told my female human mage warden that he thought purging the tower was the best option (he has anti-mage bias - something i never saw while playing male mages (male and mage is my most often played character))

Badass, hot, tomboyish girl with an attitude. A.K.A Jack from Mass Effect.

That's a big part of my ideal love interest too. (I already mentioned end of page 7)

After every Bioware game is released (and I buy and play it), I always try to put my finger on what part of the romance was most important to me. However, after three or four titles, I'm forced to concede that I have no idea what specifically appeals to me, that it changes for every game, and nearly every new romance my PC has persued was done for a completely different reason.

Broadly, I can say that I really enjoy when love interests play a major roll in the plot, even if it's not necessarily in a positive way (Anders, for instance).

In the past, my favorite Bioware romances have been Alistair, Anders, Garrus, Liara, Merrill, Malavai Quinn, Kira Carsen, and Torian Cadera, but to me they have very little in common. Hm. Maybe I'm just missing it.

Out of Bioware games, Aerie (BG2:SoA & ToB) and Nathyrra (NWN:HotU) have been my easy favs, with Liara close behind (didn't like having to restart her romance in ME2 & ME3).

Or they could base on off of a gal I work with; her ranting actually relaxes me - something I didn't think was possible. Now when Morrigan goes off on a rant, I just want to draw a sword...

I've been replaying Awakening, and I just keep staring at him with googly eyes wishing it'd happen. Sigh.

I'm not ashamed to admit I squealed like a fangirl when I found him in DA2!  Apart from his obvious attractions, surely a Warden who is also able to move in Noble circles would be useful if the game does indeed go to Orlais??  Yes, it's a straw, and I will clutch at it!  :D

A romanceable Orlesian might be interesting too, given we've all been conditioned to more or less hate them.....

I tend not to like love interests that are abrasive (model example: Ice queens) - especially since you don't always get opportunities to respond in kind and as appropriate - which can feel like agency is taken from the player.

I just replayed Neverwinter Nights and I'd love to see someone like Sand in human-form. Someone really sarcastic and arrogant, who isn't evil but not reall good either.

I want a character that isn't a virgin, chaste or a ****. A slow burning romance... You have to gain their trust, companionship, friendship and then you can start flirting. Someone who has maybe had a past relationship and is moving on when you meet them. Someone funny, kind and loyal but not afraid to speak up or defend themselves and you know... Good looks are always a plus.

And on the actual romance rather than the love interest...
After playing the mass effect games none of the romances in Dragon age make me happy. I realize the Warden/Hawke only has one game to fall in love  where as Shepard has three but the DA romances just felt so rushed and forced... Id rather not have the climax of the relationship be teh sex and how about some handholding, a hug, sitting on his lap making out gentle kiss on the cheek or maybe some plain old luring stares would be nice.

Basically, Bioware give me something completely different and Ill be happy.

Hmm, humour plays a massive part. If the character is unable to crack a few jokes or good lines (though ideally it'd be every ten seconds) then I tend to lose immediate interest. No one to intense or serious so I guess they'd be something like...

1. Garrus
2. Varric (if only)
3. Isabela
