I know that best way to use these things are not to let them run dry, but sometimes you just have to squeeze the last drop out of them to kill some pesky banshee.
 
Is there some trick of reloading collector weapons fast if they run out of juice? Their reloading seems so inconsistent, sometimes reloading start after 5 seconds and next time wait might last through entire wave. 

so far I've tried pressing reload button until it starts reloading instead of just waiting and so far it feels like it gives best results

I've never experienced ammo reload unless I run the reload animation with the character holding the weapon away from their face. As far as I knew this was the only way to reload the weapon (I've never tested if a thermal clip pack would do it, though theoretically I suppose it would.)

I've never liked the way they work. Considering that there are many alternatives out there, i just dont use the collector weapons.

i just use the collector smg on double power classes so i never run out of ammo...
as far as the ppr on the destroyer, if you take off devastator mode and reapply it it will kickstart the guns reload.

Ammo packs do indeed refill your collector rifle ammo as soon as you use one.

Op, you didn't wait for the gun to start cooling down right? You can't do anything before it starts to cool down, it will reset and you have to do it again.

If you are in need of a cooldown, use of AR or marksman will put one in the clip and cause it to recharge again. Useful if you overshoot just as your recharge finishes.
