okay. this is very frustrating. i've done the broken circle quest. i went through the dream thingy with all the demons. now im at the arl of redcliffe and im doing the battle in the courtyard with the revenant. I run over...pull the lever to let the knights in. and no knights come through the gate.and all the undead swarm me/ and my party immediately. i've read several other posts that say "take out the archers first/save the revenat till last...but even creeeeeeping slowly forward and taking out the archers...then creeeeeping forward and running away as SOON as something comes..the revenant STILL runs right out to us and smashes us all very quickly. I have alistair who always goes down first, leliana, and wynne. i am a human mage. three characters level 9 i level 8.

You run over to the left side open the gate and no knights come through? That's strange. Did you leave any knights alive or are they all dead? Did you lower the difficulty? Because the Relevant would have a tendency to stomp you party. Are revenants immune to cold damage? Sorry i'm not too helpful.

There immune to cold and nature magic. So if your using those use something else for revenant.

If there are no knights rushing through to help then I believe that means you lost them all during the attack on Redcliffe (the first fight, up on the hillside). So one option is to go back to the attack and replay making sure a good number of knight survive (they're useful for a later battle too as well as this one).
But that might be a lot of back-peddaling. Sadly I'm not sure your team is optimal - Leliana isn't generally very impressive until about level 12-13.
It's tough, but do-able. I'd fiddle with Wynne's tactics to make sure she's spam-healing Alistair. And make sure he's drinking health pots too. Between them Alistair should be able to take a beating (which is handy as he's probably the only character in your party who really can). Make sure Shield Wall is active if you have it (this should always be on for Alistair) and the threat-generating talents, such as Threaten and Taunt.
Picking off the archers is a sound tactic. If you can bring yourself to, so is kiting. You have three ranged characters and a tank, so don't be afraid to pull Alistair back and lead the revenant around.
What spells do you have?

Sniping the archers, then the revenant's minions is a good way to do it at earlier levels without the Knights' help. May be you should try equipping everyone with ranged weapons, and keep them at 'hold'. And then attack from the farthest distance possible. Don't go near the stairs to snipe the archers. Just go ahead slightly to show them your face and double back. They'll rush down the stairs and you can take them out one by one. Then attack those skeletons that are in between you and the revenant. It is actually possible to kill every minion from a far enough distance without alerting the revenant. Hope this helps.

I've found that the hexes work well against Revenants, but you might not have those.
As a side note this is the only lieutenant level Revenant in the game, all others are boss level. So use the opportunity for practice.

You are leveling too slow, you'll be under-leveled throughout the game and never reach lv 25.
But here is the remedy

Do you have enough heal potions? Because I find that revenants drain my heal potions like nothing else. If not, go to the Dalish Camp and buy 99 elf root from the merchant (about 60 silver), then go to your own camp and buy 99 flasks. Then Morrigan or Wynne can craft 99 heal potions.
Then when you actually battle the revenant, you can potion whenever you've taken 20% or more damage, without fear of running out of potions. Keep everyone's health up, since those things hit hard.
One spell I always found extremely useful against Revenants is force field. You can use it on the Revenant to take him out of play, then take out his most of his helpers so it's just him to deal with. Or, if Alistair is about to die, force field Alistair. And while Revenant is wasting time attacking an immune Alistair you can whittle down its minions or attack the Revenant.
If your rogues have any bombs (acid flasks, etc.) or poisons, they should definitely use this fight. Wynne usually has revival spell, if Alistair dies use that to bring him to life mid-battle. Wynn should definitely be casting all useful buffs on Alistair like regeneration and heroic offense. Hopefully your mage has the heal spell too and you can spam heals on him with Wynne. If any fire arrows you have, Leliana should use those.
EDIT: Wynne usually has the group heal spell, very useful whenever everyone's health is going down at once. Be sure to use that if applicable.

Based on your description I get the impression that you're letting your guys surround the revenant which is a big no-no - a revenant will use a very powerful AoE attack if there are at least two or so people within melee range of it.
Since you've already gotten through the archer killing bit let's just focus on killing the revenant. Revenants have one main weakness - fire. Flame Weapons/Flame Blast spam can make quick work of any revenant, and if you're an advanced player then early game Leliana will be one of your strongest DPSers thanks to poison grenades (in this case, you should be using fire grenades).
Assuming you lack any of the above then the simplest way to win this fight is to have Alistair Taunt the revenant and his minions and then have him kite them around that big tree in right side of the area (just use him manually, I assume your other characters all use ranged attacks so they should be safe as long as they keep their distance). Whenever the revenant stops to cast pull on Alistair just have him stand still on the other side of the tree. As a general rule, kiting trivializes most revenant battles.
Lowering the difficulty to easy should also help.

I always put everyone to hold position, and then use a rogue archer to snipe the undead. No one moves from the entrance spot except stealthed Rogue. Usually i'm able to kill the undead without the Revenant waking up, and after that just use the rogue to open the castle gate and have the knights assist me with the Revenant.
It does have a mean melee damage, but with it being the only target and with the knights assisting he's a pretty easy kill.
