Moral of the story is, don't read so much!

Alas, I'm a chronic planner and I'm getting slightly stumped with some things...

I bought DA:O on the PS3, and so far enjoyed it.

With a bit of research I made a Human Noble, Cunning Dagger Rogue because I thought it would make a great excuse to invest in Coersion and Lock-picking skills to open up those possibilities, and not worry about them on further play throughs (where as if I didn't start with a Rogue, I'd be constantly annoyed with "wonder what's in that chest", or "wonder what that persuade option did"...I know I could have Leilana do lockpicking, but I like to do things right...

Anyway, all good, except I hated combat so much as a dual wielding Rogue!  With the locked in shoulder view, I had to spend so much time micromanaging my Rogue to attack backs that everything felt like chaos, and I never got the opportunity to manage anyone else, especially the mages. Maybe I was doing something wrong, dunno... Any tips? There just wasn't enough tactic slots to get my other party members working well, while I was running around.

So with more research, I thought a Rogue Archer would be great.  I managed to snag Arrow of Slaying by level 4 or so, and one shotting white monsters was a lot of fun, staying in the back gave me a MUCH better view of the combat field, so I actually felt like I had a grasp of what was going on, and as a result it was much easier to flick over and micro manage other party members as well...  I got STR to about 20 (after fade), Dex to 30, and CUN to 30 as well.  I planned to pump CUN to 40, and then dump the rest in DEX, going Ranger/Bard.   My part members were Dog, Alistair, and Wynne.  Seemed like a strong strategy to have Wynne focus on crowd control and turn into an Arcane Warrior, Dog to kill Mages, Alistair to tank, and a Pet, all buffed by my Bard songs.

Digging further into these boards, I then find out Archery is bugged on consoles and now stats wise I am all confused again, and just not able to figure it out.

Seems like DEX is screwed up because Longbows use 100% strength, which means I should pump CUN, and go straight for Lethality asap?  Then when the patch comes out, it all gets fixed, and DEX becomes important again, and I feel like I've wasted my time.

>:(

So I'm back at square one, thinking I should just wait for the patch to fix Archery and play something else.

Maybe make that Evil Dwarf, Reaver/Champion tank I planned to do on my second playthrough.... Or play a Mage which I wanted to save for last (as I heard they make the game pretty darn easy)...

Any help?

My advice is to take anything you read on the forums, including this post, with at least one hefty sized grain of salt.

Do you enjoy your character? Then play your character. This isn't an MMORPG. No one will slam you if you aren't perfectly min-maxed.

I do enjoy my character, but I don't want to run into a situation where I don't enjoy it, because of some silly bug that's gimping the damage it can do.

It's not necessarily min/max, so much as it would appear to be a pretty major bug. While I am not DPS obsessed (I favour things like deft hands, and coersion ranks, over damage ranks early, as I hate missing things), but big numbers are fun too!

Absolutely.

I can't answer for the console versions, but the PC version archery rogue is a great deal of fun. That's my current character.

Yeah, I had a rogue archer and changed it. I'd like to try a warrior archer, but I'm going to wait. After all, I already have 9 characters. I'm on pc, and I'm waiting until they fix archery - or someone from Bioware makes a post saying exactly how it works. On each platform.

Until then I'm not gonna mess with an archer.

2-handers are fun (I have one of those), but slow to develop. They do great damage, but their slowness in combat means you aren't going to be doing most of the party damage. Fun though.

Shield and weapon isn't bad, I had fun with that, but you won't be doing lots of damage.

Dual wielding is a blast - but you have to build it right (I don't mean only build it one way, but in a way that is 'effective'). Attributes points are important, but what skills to get when, which to include and which to miss is even more crucial in my view. And equipment is also very important.

Mages are simply amazing fun - and I normally don't like casters at all.

I thought archery was fixed on the PC (Long Bows being split 50/50 STR/DEX, instead of 100 STR like on consoles?).

That's what annoys me most as well, there is no clear answer on what is actually wrong, what is and isn't fixed, and on what platform :(

Mages are simply amazing fun - and I normally don't like casters at all.

That's why I want to save them for last haha.  I played a Bionic first in ME, and enjoyed it SO much, I could barely stand/enjoy playing some of the other classes.

If I spoil myself on a Mage first, I think I'll run into the same problem...

Why last?

Mage. If for nothing else, for the number of possibilities they offer.

edit:

Not necessarily. Spoiled experience can get boring, tiring or unrewarding after certain ammount of time, so I like to believe it is not a question of spoiling oneself, it is a question of experiencing the game say .. differently.

I've got a lot of characters (different genders, classes, origins, making different choices) all going through at the same time, although some are further through than others. This lets me switch between them when I'm bored with something, or don't feel up to something too difficult at the moment, and also lets me experience things very differently.

Load my female elven mage, go do the Circle Tower and complete it having made certain decisions. Then go load my female dwarf commoner, see how it varies, what changes, do the same things but using different methods, and so on. Or make completely different choices. Then try it with my male human noble, or whatever. Although I rarely do more than two back-to-back.

I want to get all possible endings, and experience as much variety as possible, and cover everything the game has to offer - insofar as that is possible.

if the view of the battlefield is the only thing that bothered you about a dual wield rogue why not simply zoom out?

ONLY daggers have been fixed, AFAIK. Daggers are now half strength, half dex. Bows should still be effed up but I'm not 100% sure.

You can't do this on the console versions....

I do believe all bows are 50% Dex and 50% Str and it seems it will be staying that way. Only the Crossbows are broken.

I'm not sure about the consoles though. In another thread I read that they are also 50%/50% (but only 0,3 per attribute point in either Str or Dex... that would make them a 0,6 stat modifier?).

Wow, really?  I was aware you don't have a scroll wheel so I was pretty sure you didn't have as many zoom options as a PC but none at all?  Not even a bird's eye view/over the shoulder toggle in the options somewhere?  I'm sorry, as someone that switched between the two multiple times a fight that would suck.  My mistake then.

Pysces on consoles archery is still bugged, when i did mine i had like 40ish in AGI and i pumped the rest into cunning with lethalty.u need a higher agi to hit and the lethalty takes care of the str modifier on the bows.

at the start i had some miss problems ,but it got better at like lvl 10ish.
