I know it isn't a Bioware memory, but I remember spending hours playing Bombchu bowling in Ocarina of Time just for fun and money. Minigames are hit or miss, sure, but having awesome, but unnecessary rewards for them can make for hours of extra playtime just being distracted.

I would prefer that the devs spent time on the macro game instead. If there were a small Easter Egg tucked in that didn't detract from resources, sure. But if I want mini-games, I know where to look.

I did feel Mass Effect 3 was too "one-note" with the planet-scanning as pretty much the only diversion (and it wasn't really that great)
so mini-games could add more variety to play

Every tavern should have dice and card games available. Taverns in the first two Fable games felt much more fleshed out and alive just because you could drop in for a game of coin golf or keystone.

A DA spin off of Texas Hold em would be fun. I miss being able to become super rich like in DAO through money gliches. Made my Cousland feel more like nobility.

hmm

Varric would be the best
Merrill would be very good, but wouldn't remember what to call the little horsies
Isabela would lose interest quickly unless it was Strip Chess.  And would probably get quickly distracted in that case.
Carver would get grumpy because he always lost to Hawke

I would like to see some mini games as well especially an arena or casino though I prefer card games over slots. Draw 21 or poker preferably. I actually feel like the game is missing a little something if it doesn't have some mini games. It strikes me as funny whenever people claim mini games don't have any place in a role playing game though. I've played both console and pin and paper role playing, mostly white wolf, and it's really what I expect.

How can my gangrel blind into a pub seen if she doesn't know how to dance or play cards?

I like minigames; they diversify gameplay if a) they are interesting enough and B) aren't overused

For example, ME1 lockpicking was both poorly conceived and way overused. However, I rather liked picking mechanics of ME2 and was sad to see them go in ME3. Planet scanning, on the other hand, seemed interesting at first, but was just atrocious in the long run. They should've done something different there; I don't know, use it less, make benefits more wide-ranging etc...

Pazaak... it was interesting enough, simple enough, and optional to boot. I liked the concept of a card game in a seedy bar and would like something similar to return. BUT, problem is, computer basically cheated and made pazaak extremely frustrating to me. You, the player, ALWAYS went first and that put you at a disadvantage right there, making the game statistically weighted against you. I just couldn't get past that inherent cheat in the system.

I want mini-games if they suit the ambiance of the game, or place in the game.

eg.

In DA2 the Hanged Man bar could have benefited from a poker game or darts.

The original Fable managed mini-games in a fun way too.

As for Skyrim, I don't count lock picking as a mini-game. That's a game play mechanic. A stupid one too. Lock picking is lame. Allow us to bash a lock or magically open it or just be badasses and bam! it's picked.

I kind of wanted to play diamondback or wicked grace in DA2.  Shame we didn't have the option, I think it would've been fun, especially if was done as an optional side quest, ala witcher 2.

I liked poker and dice in Red Dead: Redemption, Keystone in Fable was fun because it was kind of like craps, which I love. Games that mix skill with a bit of chance are the best. Card and dice games are hard to do wrong because they are often spin offs of games that exist already.

I'd love some sort of card/gambling game. A fleshed out version of wicked grace or diamondback.

I quickly looked over this, but it seems that by "minigame" you're referring more to the "spend some time somewhere doing something fun that isn't related to any sort of crit path (or at least isn't significantly related)?" As opposed to "I like to play frogger while hacking!" <.<

Do people prefer a minigame for the lockpicking type of activities? DA hasn't really featured them.

I know we have done some experimenting with a type of board game (or perhaps card game), but unfortunately I haven't heard much more about that (and that was almost a year or so ago).

I like Skyrim style lock pick games yea, and the gambling in the Witcher was cool.

I haven't played Skyrim (though the lockpicking minigame has existed i others).

I have mixed reservations about some of the stuff in The Witcher. Some people have said that a they played Dice Poker for hours upon hours, whereas it didn't really interest me. I loved playing Pazaak in KOTOR I/II however. I think I just preferred the game more than the dice poker which just came across as a 2 roll competitive yahtzee that was mostly just about playing the odds.

I did spend a lot of time in casinos in Fallout: New Vegas though. Especially with a lucky character.

Where as I hate Pazaak (really honestly would just stop playing the game if it became plot required that I play it to advance) .  The Casinos where ok, I think you give Dice poker to little credit, it is luck based, but no less so than normal poker, and you can't count cards in it, I really liked the concept.

Skyrim lock picking is pretty much the same as FO3/NV lock picking, so you know what I am talking about.

That's actually why I didn't like it. I just look at what he has and what I have, and I can go "well, there's a 1/3 chance I am able to pull off the full house. I hope I do." I'm not a huge fan of 5-card draw poker either (too little information available, although I do know what cards I have seen) to influence my decision making process.

Well I don't gamble IRL (I have to addicitve a personality to risk it) so a game where I don't have to know the rules in advance helps alot.

In the Witcher 2, I met a priest an a tavern who promised to give me a 'special gift' if I showed I was favored by luck. I won three games of dice poker against him, and the 'special gift' was... a link to a website.

I went to the website and it said 'This offer has expired.'

I didn't like dice poker after that.

Edit: Wiki remembers better than I.

Mini-Games are tricky(and no doubt notorious from Mass Effect). Dice Poker certainly had a sleek look for the board, but there wasn't enough requirement of skill - it lacks a test of competency for the player. It felt like the equivalent of a slot machine.

Red Dead Redemption's poker game had an allure of immersion to it. Looking back at ME1's Quasar, I recall it being purely a text-based mini-game and nothing else; Looking at the Full Tabled style, the atmosphere created gave the player a greater feeling of participtation than just -A to Add Another, -B to Fold-.

Also, I'd like to point out TW2 did add a Quest-y touch to their mini games dependent on how far you'd gotten. The Arm Wrestling for the final one is ridiculous.

The questy touch adds to the reward mechanic. I did the arm wrestling and fighting, but stopped with the dice.

Although by the same extension, linking them to quests feeds into the OCD of some people. Should a side minigame like that really be linked to a quest?

for boxing or similar sure, having a 'league' you fight your way up is nice.  The gambling games no.
