My favourite minigame is Somnium from the Civ IV fantasy-themed mod Fall from Heaven II. FfH2 is a turn-based strategy game and Somnium is a card game using a custom deck with ten suits. Somnium combines skill and randomness in a pleasant manner; it is easy to grasp but difficult to master. Whenever one is at peace with another civilization, one can play Somnium against that civilization's leader. One has the option of inviting them for a pleasant game of Somnium (doesn't matter if you win or lose) or betting one's pride against them (for a very small bonus or penalty to that leader's attitude depending on whether you win or lose; the bonus doesn't stack if you win in this way again).

It would have been fun to be able to play something like Somnium with one's companions.  I would have enjoyed being able to play it with Varric, Isabela and Fenris in particular.  It would just be a minigame, but, in a sense, it would be a way to "spend time" with one's companions when not fighting enemies. :-)  Or maybe it would be possible to play it with a wider selection of characters from the game, assuming that story events didn't put one "at war" with them...  One wouldn't need to have cutscenes or conversations necessarily, just a card deck in one's home, camp, or inventory that one would click, opening the interface for the game.  Choose an opponent/partner from a list of those available at the time, and away you go!  :-)

Minigames that are essentially reskins of frogger, asteroids, etc? No thanks.

I wouldn't mind fighting tournaments though. Maybe randomize the enemy parties? Add betting? That would be interesting imo.

A chase scene (with horses, brontos, etc) could be a decent minigame, like in LotSB.

Might be alone on this, but I would even like to see a Happy Wars (or, more accurately, a UT3 Warfare) style minigame (i.e. cap spawn points between your castle and the enemy's for your troops to spawn at, lay siege to their castle, then destroy the objective once you breach their gates and walls).

A Tower of Hanoi puzzle? Just one.

How about making creating and defusing traps as mini-game style?

QTE sex scenes. Press "O" repeatedly.

If you fail, your chosen LI dumps you and tells the rest of the party how much you suck in bed, thus locking you out of any other romance possibilities.

That's so wrong on so many level's.

Regarding the ToH. I got one of those for my nephew. Being easy, if you know how, you could start the player off with simply moving block's to the other side. Then look at way's of increasing the difficulty by adding more block's and a block weight/block match the colour's mechanic.

We could go into how adding mechanic's reduces the enjoyment value. But allowing the player to select the level of difficulty, provided it is not main narrative dependent, would give other's the choice of playing, not playing, or playing at their level. And then pushing themselves in the future should they choose.

Can't remember if it was Hero's of Might and Magic. But there was a game where you rolled up 4 characters, went adventuring, and the further through the game you got the bigger and more impressive your little fort became, until it was a full fledged castle with lotsa room's and goodies. Not exactly a mini game, but the ability to do thing's in game that causes your starting hut to end up as a castle was one of those goal's that, was not mission critical, but you strove for anyway for that feeling of satisfaction.

That would be Might and Magic VII.  Interestingly enough, M&M 7 introduced a mini-game called Arcomage which was popular enough to be released as a stand-alone game.   Arcomage was a card based game involved in a side line quest.  Arriving at the castle you got a quest to acquire an Arcomage deck, then later a quest to win a game at each of the inns in the game (12 iirc).  Each inn had a different starting situation for the game.

I am not in favor of in-line minigames such as lock-picking, especially if they involve RL skill checks.  Also as others have noted, games and even puzzles in the main line quests interfere with the game pacing and impact.

Fable II had good mini games, I think. I would see the mini games contribute towards non combat stats as well as Sherlock's wallet. And that the games are tailored to the type of inquisitor we select. A rouge would excel and be most grandly rewarded for mini games involving games of chance and grifting and larceny. A warriors strong suit would be working at a blacksmith and build fortifications and tournament fights. A mage would be good at working in an apothecary and translating documents and plotting maps.

All of these activities should be available to any type of Sherlock, but there should be a clear advantage for the ones that would Excel at them. Also, I would see the mini games have some inclusion in questing. Say for instance getting a weapon, time, armor, or accessory, available no where else. And having a quest directly require participation in a mini game. Or even better an exploratory quest being unlocked from playing a mini game.

Last but certainly not least, I hope the mini games are entertaining. Charming as they were, Fable II's games became a bit repetitive, and once I'd acquired enough real estate, I no longer wished to play them. I hope BW can come up with games that stay fresh.

That one tall order, I know, and rather vague to boot, but there'l are my thoughts on the matter of mini games in a nutshell.

Ahh, you mean Fable 2's jobs. I miss those. I loved doing them, even when I had tons of money.

Not only were they minigames, but they were minigames that helped you along the main path by rewarding you with gold to spend. They weren't available all the time, but if you found a job that was available(blacksmithing, woodcutting, bar tending, etc etc) you could do it for as long as you wanted and get paid.

I'd love minigame jobs like that in DA3. Especially if its like Fable 2's bartending, which was my personal favorite.

Video I found of Fable 2's minigame bartending job

That actually exists. I really love the game Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, but what the hell were they thinking putting a sex-QTE in the game?

You mean the one where you have the option of taking pain killer's for a headache? The same game where, if your ex leaves instead of getting frisky from your guitar skillz you can having a drink and kill yourself from mixing alcohol and pain killers together?

Or the scene where your effectively a zombie making out with the police officer? Which unlock's the 'have a child golden age' ending?

That'll teach the player to click in everything on screen with no regard for the consequence's.

Everyone who's mentioned FF8's Triple Triad gets free chocolate chip cookies.<Takes a handful of said cookies, bends reality by reaching through the monitor, and drops them on the other side multiple times.>

Also anyone remember FFX's Blitzball, and how the computer was a cheating b@st@rd?

Blitzball was a pain to win in the main storyline. Bit of practice though and it's possible to do with Jecht's trick shot.

I thought it was a great mini game. It was a bit like Blood Bowl. Without the killing.

I loved FF8's Triple Triad and FF10's Blitzball. Final Fantasy Tactics is itself a giant minigame + plot.

AC3's board and strategy games were fun.

I don't usually go for poker-type card games, but I'd make an exception for Diamondback + Wicked Grace. Plus there's great potential for merchandising tie-ins- sell us the custom decks + rules! I promise to happily shell out money for it.

I liked the Fade puzzles where you moved barrels into configurations and got skill points for it, and MotA's puzzles were awesome. Except for the puzzle where you flipped tiles- that one drove me absolutely INSANE.

I love minigames, and if I can earn gold, skill points, items or achievements, I'm a happy camper.

Also the Proving was great, and I'd gladly do a similar game for cash in DA3.

I'd like to see some Dragon Age pazaak. Some kind of fun gambling game that I can play in different cities, against different NPCs, for a variety of loot.

Yeah. JRPG's at least in the earlier generations tended to excel at mini-games.

I know it's stupid, but I rather liked the job minigames in Fable 2 and 3. They weren't really games, it was just pressing a button at the right time, but I really enjoyed pouring ale and making pies for some reason.

I quickly looked over this, but it seems that by "minigame" you're referring more to the "spend some time somewhere doing something fun that isn't related to any sort of crit path (or at least isn't significantly related)?" As opposed to "I like to play frogger while hacking!" <.<

Do people prefer a minigame for the lockpicking type of activities? DA hasn't really featured them.

I know we have done some experimenting with a type of board game (or perhaps card game), but unfortunately I haven't heard much more about that (and that was almost a year or so ago).

No.

Personally. No. I don't like it. In Oblivion I just waited until I hit that certain level (9? 15? Something) to do Nocturnal's quest to get the Skeleton Key and then just spam auto-pick with every lock in the game. In Skyrim I just endure it since the lockpick mini-game in there has existed nearly unchanged from Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. So I'm used to it.

But I prefer the 'character knows how to pick a lock' method instead of having me do it. It also removes any point in specializing in lockpicking in those games. It was made useless in Oblivion (although mostly due to the Skeleton Key) and is likewise useless in Skyrim to put any perks into that tree. It's better in the Fallout games because there's a threshold check.

All that said. I wouldn't complain if there's a lockpicking mini-game added. I just prefer looting and moving on.
