That's nice. But I still like minigames in my RPG's. Mix things up a bit. Just running from fight to fight gets boring.

Weird! None of the Bioware RPGs I've played(ie: all of them) have ever just been running from fight to fight.

edited for my petulance. I apologize, Noviere for being.....well, b*tchy. I'm tired of fussing and fighting on these forums.

I just would like some minigames. That's all. :wizard:

I would like to be able to play minigames in DA:I....I enjoyed playing Pazzak in Kotor, and I even enjoyed playing the slots in Mass Effect 1. Maybe DA could implement something similar to Pazaak that you can play in Taverns throughout Thedas-there could be a card vendor in the tavern in Orlais, Nevarran..etc.

I would prefer to not have a lockpicking minigame----esp since having a rogue is normally a requirement for a party.

Not sure if been mentioned but I had another thought on why this would be quite nice.

In both Origins and DA2 I avoided buying runes and potions despite being pretty cheap at 50 Silvers. Reason being is I dont want to buy four potions and that cost two sovereigns which I could be putting towards that awesome Staff I want that is 60 Sovereigns.

If I can win a mini-game that gives me 50 silvers after five wins then I will be far more inclined to use the crafting and potion system, something that I admit I never fully utilised in Dragon Age games.

This is actually very true. I never used any of the shops or requisition orders from clerks like Lady Elegant, since I became more inclined to picking up bombs, poisons, and runes from chests and corpses. With a minigame as you described it, I could do this, make my own potions and runes, and save a lot of money to buy powerful weapons that I never have been able to achieve in my DA playthroughs.

What I want out of mini-games, like fishing in Zelda, is something that lets me have fun playing the game, but not really be playing the game. If that makes sense. Like, if I feel like playing Zelda right now, but don't feel like doing the next dungeon at the moment, I'll just go fishing for an hour and be happy. And its low cost, which helps. I never played any of the gambling games in KOTOR or ME because I didn't want to risk losing money.

I agree, "lock picking type mini games" are not really mini games to me, I have always found them tedious and in the way of me getting that loot. When I think of a mini game in a game my mind runs straight to "fun activity that is not essential to any part of the game that I can sink some time into"

I'm with you on not really considering them mini games but I've never really seen them as getting in the way of loot.  I've actually been able to get a lot of loot I really shouldn't because of it.  Example is in Fallout 3 if I come across a really tough lock that's way beyond my skill, I can still have a go.  I'm probably going to fail but there is a chance I'll find just the right spot and get that container open, which appeals to me a lot more than the DA:O/2 system of "Skill to low?  No loot for you."  I don't mind failing but I'd much rather be given the chance to try than just be told flat out that I'm going to fail.

Do people prefer a minigame for the lockpicking type of activities? DA hasn't really featured them.

Please no lockpicking minigames... enough of those in other RPG series. DA is none the poorer for not featuring them.

yep.

I enjoyed the lil board games in AC3. Especially w/ sum of the major npc's. But they would have lil snippets of dialogue. Or get impatient when I took too long. Tapping their fingers on the table.

Or when Connor would do a bit of trash talking---in his Connor way. "That is unfortunate....for you." it made me chuckle.

...Oh.  I haven't played any of the Assassin's Creed games and I felt so original for suggesting playing games with companions in DA3.  :crying:

The mini-games in The witcher 2 were great. I actually enjoyed the dices more than fighting.

It is a shame that in DA there is no thief class :-)

Dragon Age 2 entered a cycle of "Fight. Talk. Fight. Talk." right at the beginning and never let go of it. Mass Effect 2 and 3 broke the cycle with hacking minigames/planet scanning and planet pinging respectively.
While minigames do perform a service as pacebreakers, what we can really use are more puzzle/exploration levels. A true gameplay change for a measured amount of time - a puzzle level - would give the player a much needed breath from the "Fight. Talk. Fight. Talk."  cycle without needing to repeat itself continuously, the way minigames do due to their shorter nature.
For "measured amount of time": Sacred Ashes Gauntlet was fine in lenght. Most people would complain the Fade Labyrinth in the Circle Tower was too long (despite being my favourite part of DA:O. I like long puzzle levels).

While I agree that it makes sense to have minigames serve this purpose (more than having them as pacebreakers, anyway) this strikes me as a "hub" distraction (consider the casinos in Fallout New Vegas), not as a "gameplay" distraction.

I'm not sure if this has been said or not but I actually really loved the card games from ff8 and ff9.
I spent so much time collecting the strong rare cards in ff8 and battling. Was really awesome how you could challenge random people and see what cards you could get.
Also ff10 had the blitz ball thing as a national sport.. that was pretty cool too.

All I know is that FFX's blitzball was the best mini-game I've ever played I probably put half the games time into blitzball.
Man those good mini-games are some of the things I miss In modern final fantasy games.

Mini-games are great. Mandatory mini-games are not!

I do not want to play space invaders/frogger/solve a puzzle/scan a plant/rock/mountain every time I try to unlock a door/chest or need to upgrade or go to the next area. I'd rather visit the dentist...twice.

best mini game(s) for me were in FF7 and FF8, chocobo races and triple triad. lost so many hours doing those.

I hate to say it but I was totally thinking about Triple Triad as I read through the OP's post. For some reason that I cannot explain, collecting those cards and then using them to overpower somebody else's deck was addictingly fun!

I also really enjoyed the FF10 mini-game, I think it was called Blitzball(?).

Recruiting players throughout the game, leveling up players and unlocking new skills, trying to build an unstoppable team. Way more fun then it should have been!

Not sure how I would feel about something similar showing up in a Dragon Age game but I'd be very open to the idea.

Not a fan of the Skyrim Lock picking mini-game or the Mass Effect hacking mini-games. They are fun the first time, and the second, and the third, but on the 50th? Ugh, no. Kill me!

At some point in Skyrim, I just stopped opening chests and doors if they were locked. I don't wanna waste my time picking another lock if I don't have to.

Though I'd rather have an amazing DA:I product with no mini-games then a lackluster DA:I with a surprisingly awesome mini-game...

Jus sayin' <_<

I wouldn't want a mini-game for mini-game's sake. It would have to be something that fits into the world and the characters' lives and the story and reveals something interesting, provides sights and sounds to behold, a vehicle for profound story telling. It would have to be great art, as should be the rest of the game. If anything, an RPG should be great art from beginning to end. Challenge and all the rest should be optional, selectable by the player to suit their tastes. Otherwise, may as well play darts.

The only mini game I adored in a game was Might and Magic 7's card game (anyone remember what that was called, if anyone remembers it? edit: it was called acromage I believe) Anyway, it was the BEST mini game ever.

I Prefer minigames that have no real relation to the main game. Like Jade Empires plane shooter, it was just a fun diversion that unlocked some dialogue with a single character. Pazaak was fun in KotOR, racing not so much. I hate racing minigames. Skyrim didnt really have minigames (lockpicking isnt a minigame, its moving a lockpick and clicking) and it was fun so minigames are not necessary, they just add 'flavor'.

Mass Effects minigames on the other hand weren't too fun. ME's mako was aweful and long, ME2's 'probes' were almost as bad and ME3's ship pinging game was too lifeless.

Card games would be fun :)

(Tower of Hanoi is not a minigame, it is an overused mathematical problem that is far too easy)

Bowls in AC3 was great, as well as Poker in Far Cry 3

However with AC3 those board games were just impossible...

ME1's Mako was not a mini game but a fully realised aspect of Shepard's Space Marine Heritage in that he, or she, got to drive a tank around alien landscapes. ME1's hacking on the other hand was more mini game-esque in that you had to find the gap in the spinning circle's and time your advance to avoid hitting them. There are also the gambling machines on the Citadel, but those were not really something I went back to on account that gambling game's you can't carry around with the character are time consuming to reach and potentially out of your way in traversing the game's main narrative.

ME2's probe was more mini game but frustrating in it's repetativeness, and the fact that the planet's were so big that you'd need to stop scanning to restock probe's which just added to the time need to do it.

I would like a "play games with your pet ghast" mini-game. That would come with a pet ghast DLC. (hint, hint)

I don't really care for card games in RPGs because I'm spectacularly bad at cards in RL. Seriously, Anders could beat me. I also don't care for shooting range games, because I seriously stink at aiming.

I like fishing, though. :)
