Hey all, Hellbender here. Been derping around in 2, getting my Shepard ready for 3 (On like my ninth playthrough). Had an interesting question for Bioware.

Would it be possible for, say, The Great Overlords EA and BW to release some SINGLE PLAYER ONLY modding tools? Nothing insanely world-bending like full source or anything, just some simplistic little tinker-tools for those of us that want to expand our world. For instance:
  • System Builder. Go play Weyland-Yutani, and build better worlds. Why is Alpha Centauri not explored, for instance? It's only four light-years away you know. Also, they've found at least one 'Possible' Near Earth planet. Also, for kicks, I totally would want to make Rukbat. Why? Because I am a Pern fan. Don't judge me. Please.
  • Weapons. Sure, you'd get the people flooding the forums with CHECK OUT MY NOOK LAUNCHING HARRIERDUURR! But for every 1 of them, there's three, four, or five people with genuinely brilliant ideas that would work beautifully with the Lore.
  • Armor. Again, some people would abuse the everliving crap out of that, by building an ATLAS armor with the agility of a Phantom, but as before, there's more people that would try to put in actual effort and create something good.
  • Increase your talent pool! Running out of ideas for DLC? Get a few of the modders together, give them a 5% cut, and have them help you make something new, an expansion, something. Look at the longevity of series such as Half Life, CS, C&C, and the resurgent popularity of games such as BF, FO:NV. MODS KEEP YOUR GAME ALIVE.
Furthermore, if you had a dedicate mod-base, you could drop them a bone from time to time. Take, say, the top ten User-Made 'SP' maps and have us run MP missions on them. Your game sales would go through the roof as more gamers brought their friends in, and your company's rep would improve. 'Cause no one's ever gone bankrupt playing the 'Champion of Gamers' card.

Just something to think about. You gave us an RPG that could be something incredible, and yet you willingly hobbled it by creating linear maps and thought-trains. This would give you a chance to return to what made NWN great.

Bump in the quite probably vain hope of even a sliver of an answer from Bioware?

Bump again, still in the vain hope of a BioWare employee commenting!

I don't think they'll do it ever. ME2 had no such options and from what I understand it wasn't very mod friendly. EA isn't very mod friendly so I doubt they want to spend money on creating tools for the community to create mods. They probably don't want us to have content that they cannot charge us for which wouldn't be strange with EA.

There won't be any mod tools. However, ME3Explorer is doing fine work on trying to mod the game properly.

I can dream, can't I?

In all seriousness though, it seems that Bioware and even EA left their grand traditions of paying attention to their community. How many EA\\BioWare games have been kept alive through modding? Tons.

Maybe BioWare did, I doubt EA ever paid attention to anything mor than their income statements. It's their loss though, modding communities can be very helptul, Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas are very popular because of it. However like I said, I bet EA doesn't think it is worth investing on it and they probably don't want to give people the chance to create content that is free and they have no way to charge for.

once upon a time .. games like sim sity were supplied with modding tools to build your own buildings and stuff.

neverwinter nights was only interesting because of the fanmade modules.

and dragon age: origins-mods were supported by bioware since day one.

glorious times ...

WOW, an actual good idea that, if taken seriously, would benefit both the player base and the company that made the game?
