Great thread

Sheryl, David and Mary can I just add my thanks to the others already expressed here. The writing in this game is outstanding. I'm playing 8 different characters simultaneously just to get a flavour of the different party banter and situations. The amount of variety and interaction is just nothing short of incredible. I am very, very grateful for all the effort that has been put into this game by you three and everyone else involved with the writing effort. This aspect of the game just brings the world to life.

My favourite bit at the moment actually is the two chantry sisters in Denerim, I actually take the party closer to the chantry to hear what they're saying. Love that.

You mean this?

I think i've said it before, but this game has too many boring combat parts between the kickass story parts, and the party banter is the part of this game. I simply cannot not talk to everyone when i'm in camp, and purposely plot my course trough towns to trigger as many conversations as possible.

If only the combat would flow as fluently. Still, this game was well worth the full price, if only for the writing alone.

Enchantment! :wizard:

I sometimes wonder if BioWare is not already regretting making such lovable characters, at  least a little bit?

I mean, i am really looking forward to Awakening, i am pretty confident the 5 new characters will be equally awesome, but i guess it's the same in RL: you'll always remember your first kiss, first love and so on, and the companions of DAO will always shape my DAO experience for future games, and regardless of how good the new ones will be (and i am confident they will be awesome), they will probably never be a match for my old favorites, as they were the first ones.

I truly hope we will see more of them than just the one who joins your party and they will reflect upon the experiences we shared together and hopefully, build upon the relationship we had with them in DAO.

But again, this feelings are just another example of how well written these characters were and how much i enjoyed playing with them than anything else.

And who knows, maybe in future xpacs/games, they have the ressources to bring them all back. One can at least hope :innocent:

I keep wanting to run with different companion combinations just so I can hear all of the dialogue between the various companions, but there's always a character or two that I simply can't leave out of the party due to my love of their personality! Great job once again Bioware, though I can't say that I'm surprised given your track record in this regard. It's a staple of your games to me, and it's something that I can always count on when it comes to buying a Bioware game.

@RageGT Yes that's the one, the dialogue for those two is hilarious. I'm sure the voice actors had great fun recording it. "Boasts... It's boast sister, not roast" haha

I totally agree with the others here. I am constantly being surprised and delighted by little dialogues between the characters and have replayed and replayed this game over and over since I bought it just to relive the whole character development and romance storylines. (Much to my husbands surprise as I usually play a game once and then forget it)

This is by far the best game I have ever played. I love we have so many choices for discussions and the humour that transcends the whole game.

If I havent already mentioned this I love being able to play a game where I can influence if there is a happy romantic ending or not. Some games with romance end so badly and leave me totally disappointed. I love the way this game was designed and written and I bet it was no easy task to write it with so many potentially different endings.

Please, please PLEASE make more of the same!!! Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB

(PS. I also adore the song that Lilliana sings by the fireside. It is really beautiful!!Image IPB)

Everything about the writing for this game was stellar:

The characters are the best that have ever been done finally surpassing BG2. The humour with underlying serious tones from Alistair, the character that puts her goals above her feelings finally and the rich personalities of the rest of the cast.

The codex is a rich compendium of fascinating fables that benefits greatly from being written in a mythological manner.

The main plot was brilliant: Grey Wardens are fascinating as are the Darkspawn. Bioware did a great job of presenting the human antagonists as more than cliches. Anora particularly was a character that actually compelled me to backstab.

My only complaint with regard to story was a lack of exposition on the Grey Wardens and Darkspawn in the main plot and desire for a stronger connection between the side areas beyond the need to recruit an army.

I've played a lot of computer games in my time. I've never found a game yet that equals the skill put into writing stories and dialogue that you find in a Bioware game. Dragon Age is no exception. Thank you very much, and well done!

Sadly, you can't influence it in all cases in DAO :crying:

I would like to thank the writers of DAO I have not enjoyed a game so much in many years. When I first looked at it I wasn't looking at it for myself however, when I read the summery of the game I fell in love with it. Thank you so much for a game that I can play. :)

I'd like to add my own voice to the chorus here, and say that this is probably the best game I've ever played in terms of dialogue and characters. There's not a single companion I dislike or find uninteresting, something I cannot say of any other game. The writing in general is outstanding.

Congratulations to the writers for making this great game  :)

I'll throw in with this same sentiment. I'll stop doing what I'm doing just to hear the interactions between all the various companions. I'm still impressed at the quality of these interactions and the variety - both that it is just 1 or 2 characters that talk to each other but also the raw # of conversations they will have together.

I have to know, after being a fan of Halo in the past and reading all their books which represents really what happened before and in between the games. Do the books written by David Gaider really show what happened before Origins?

I agree with every positive thing said, Shale, by far, is my favorite via dialogue, it cracks me up about when shale hates on the birds, Damn the birds, I agree ^^ and Alistairs bit about dancing the remigold in front of the king, I lol'd so loud. ^^

Great job, this game will give already has, and will continue wasting many hours of my life, BUT it is completely worth it ^^

This a truly great game, with fantastic dialogue. It keeps in pace with every BioWare title.

Every character has the perfect dialogue.

My hats off also go to the voice actors that really caught the spirit of the words..

You might want to watch this. She's more gorgeous than ever here. No wonder it's my #1 viewed!

Dragon Age - Leliana's Song - Trailer Edition Image IPB

I'm now doing a series on funny NPC characters and some unusual dialogue choices. Some people definitely miss those even with many runs in the game (it's already said on the comments). I'm doing them on the fly as I'm actually playing 5 characters at the same time doing the same areas, so it will take a while to be completed. Anyway, my two latest uploads are for that series (still not playlisted).

And how can I ever thank the whole BioWare Dragon Age team, not only the writers? They gave me some awesome movie material and I went from 200 views to almost 100,000 views since I started making the movies of the game, primarily for my own enterteinment and watching again later!

In response to SoalofAeons... Yes the books do talk about what happens before the game. I read them before the game came out, and I feel they gave it a whole new depth for me, because now you already know who some of these characters. Loghains betrayal and Duncuns death hit very hard.

David Gaider... Thank you. I've been a lover of books long before I ever got into gaming. Though I was never a big fan of RPG novels (though those are the only games I play) I picked up your books because I was couldn't wait for the game to come out. I must say I was very pleasantly surprised at how wel written they were. Very engaging stories. Don't stop. Dragon Age has spoiled me. I want more and more. It's like being a part of your fravorite fantasy movie. It's so Alive.

I have to contribute to this as well. I loved DAO in my first play through, and I am still playing it through with different kind of characters. It almost brings back the days of the PnP to me, and at least the days I spent playing through BG1&2. Thank you Bioware, for making it happen once again, when I thought the time of such RPGs for computer were over.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't think I would ever come back to post here after the disappointment expressed in my previous post, but since Fernando Melo referred to this thread as one that the Bioware writers were actually reading for feedback, I might as well repost my thoughts here:

The writing is excellent viewed from certain perspectives, but from other perspectives it might be seen as a regress on Bioware's part and disappointing.

Now what on earth am I talking about ?

I have posted many heartfelt posts about my gratefulness to Bioware for introducing me to rpg gaming. I was once greatly looking forward to Dragon Age, and posted frequently on the old DA boards.  I also contributed enthusiastically to pre-release feedback that Bioware incorporated into the final game (e.g. expressing the importance of party banter,  humor, little things that reward exploration, sly references to Baldur's gate etc.)

But after reading and participating in many threads about race in dragon age, it seems to me that Dragon age is the first euro-centric  Bioware game ever created. This is going to be the first time where playing a black character in a Bioware rpg game will be like playing a fish on land.

Now this was a deliberate design choice that the writers made. At first, I accepted that DA is set in Ferelden and Ferelden is simply a tiny part of Thedas and it makes perfect sense for it to be a Caucasian-only place since there is not much travelling going on. But after further reading, it appears that there are no black people anywhere at all on Thedas. Not the Qunari, who are arab/mediterranean, and certainly not the Chasind, who  seem more like Native Americans. So, it's not like this is something they could explore in a future expansion.

I am going to end this post here, although I had much, much more to write. I expect even more knee-jerk reactions  which will misconstrue my post along the lines of,  "why don't you go call Al sharpton!!! Bioware is racist!!"  Funny, because I personally do NOT see this as a racism issue in any way shape, or form. It is strictly a roleplaying limitation in a roleplaying game.

The only reason I wrote it is because I was under the delusion that the few intelligent, cogent posts in the previous threads about race in Thedas (and also the blogs) had given constructive feedback to Bioware.  But apparently, those threads were left un-read by the Bioware staff, and were inevitably swallowed to the bottom of the pile where they likely will remain unread.

I too have to give praise to you great writers! I truly love DAO and its world, and hope that we will get to experience many, many more adventures there. You have really created a great world and characters, and I cannot wait to explore more of Thedas and its inhabitants <3 Everything from the banters to the romances... everything was written so well. You don't know how much I have laughed and even cried while playing this game. Kudos to all of you!

Please, never stop writing

I think what you're looking for is in Rivain. The Rivaini are dark-skinned, and while I don't know if we'll ever actually go to Rivain the further north we travel the more common a sight the Rivaini will become. Sorry you felt left out.
