Well because of this game I am brand spanking new to forums ( I'm still learning how it all works). Dragon Age drew me in so much I needed to reach out for the first time. I've never registered a game before (loved nwn), had discusions with strangers... I'm lovin' it.

Your part of a bigger family now,   People who are here to support you, answer your questions, give you hints and help on the game your playing.

I remember way back when, when I was new to a fourm.  The people on there reached out to me and became my friends, and to this day we still kept in touch, wheither it's in a game, on the phone, or just meeting.

Oghren's final speech had me choked up, and Morrigan's a close second. She made you feel for her, and how much she truly cherished you as a friend.

the whole situation with morrigan, which was done very well in my opinion. I don't know why everyone wants a happy ending with her. I have to give you credit - that was one of the most well written video game characters i've seen in a long time.

well, it's part of human nature to long for a happy ending, isn't it? Especially as we know we don't always get what we want in life.
And for me, as you said she was so incredibly well written, i just had the feeling she deserved it more than anyone. That might sound like a plain lie, but i was less depressed 'bout me than about her. After i got to know her, i just got the feeling after all she's been through she really deserved something happy and some love. And okay yes, ofc i was also concerned about me, as a good ending was my greatest wish throughout playing. I really cried at that moment.:crying:
Anyway, sorry gettin carried away, i will stop talking about something different. But again, this feelings only prove i guess how marvellously written the characters are, and that is in touch with the topic here?

Just a caution here to avoid talking about specifics with endings and characters, please. We are in the non-spoiler forum, after all.

at the top of the box where someone wrote something that you want to reply to is a button that says "Quote"  Press that button and an add reply screen will come up.  the "quote" will then be there, and you scroll down under it and write your answer to them.

I was trying to be as vague as possible. I'll just stop talking about it.

What i always forget to ask: i actually liked the elvish language you can hear fron the Dalish and sometimes also in the Alienage? Did you invented that kind of language, is it just modification of a common language, a known fantasy language or just some invented random sentences that do not make sense;)?

The elven language is mostly my doing, just as the qunari language is mostly Mary's. It's a made-up language, but we keep in mind the grammatical structure and keep a big glossary of all the words we've used so we don't lose the vocabulary.

Does this mean that the entire work of the linguist working on the Thedas languages (his forum nickname was Beesechurger, real name Wolf, if i'm not mistaken) has been scrapped during the development? I remember him from the old forums and thought those words/phrases were the remains of his doing - seems i was wrong?

I'm always stopping to listen, great touch, I hate Sten but when he talks to Leliana or
 Shale hilarity ensues.

Yes. Our use of a linguist was an experiment that just didn't work out like we'd hoped, I'm afraid. I notice that some of the phrases he quoted when he was posting on the forums are on the DA Wiki, but they're out of date.

Sometimes I wish I could have a say in what is said. Instead of what you have a choice to say, that you had a way to say something yourself to the others. Yet we can't because so many people would say things that maybe just aren't right and it would mess up the game

Actually, the fact that the player can't participate in the banter was something we couldn't avoid. I would have liked to do it, but the way the engine works you either have the full cutscene-like conversation -- which stops all action and zooms in to provide you with reply options -- or it's ambient dialogue that is going on around you. We didn't want banter to force the player to stop and listen to it if they didn't want to, and there's no way for us to provide response options to ambient dialogue you may not be paying attention to.

Glad you enjoyed the banter, however. Posted Image

Just to point it out, this can't be laid solely at my doorstep -- Sheryl Chee and Mary Kirby are responsible for just as much writing as I was, and some of their stuff is far funnier than mine is.

@Mr. Gaider.
Hmmm i think there IS a solution for in between:
Remember the storyarc, where Wynne gets her special talent?
After a random fight before keep on going Wynne almost colapses and you characters start a dialogue with her.

> Combine this with the cinematic-Dialogue scene before Ostagar, where Duncan (after meeting Cailan) invites you to a walk and by the way talks to you.

= Combining a "Random-Dialogue-Encounter", where your Characters talk with you and each other, while travelling! Maybe getting then ambushed by Enemies afterwards(i.e.Sten warns all to be more focused and Oghren pi55es him of *Fight appears* afterwards Sten and Oghren again start a discussion and without Coercion/Strength, they could start a Brawl)

I think such more fluid Banters will make the Atmosphere more alive and not so static as all this "Bridge-Banters" of your companions. By taking them in a extra made "area" it will be no too big problem for implementation(at least not for DA2 :wizard:)

David, did any one of you writers ever thought about inter party relationships from NPC's? I have no idea if this is feasible in any way, i just thought sometimes that it would be nice if for example Alistair would fall for Leliana, they seem to be a good match.

I know it's still a RPG and no romance sim, just an idea. And i must admit, i had imagined Alistair coming to me asking how best to woo her since i am already in a relationship, and even the thought of this possible dialogue with him made me laugh...

I think it's fun that the banter is random and does not require input from me. It adds to the realism of the characters that not all conversations revolve around you!

Yes. Inter-party banter can have a progression (this is how some conversations can refer back to previous conversations) and thus we could have NPC's develop relationships if we wished. We didn't pursue that with DAO, since the romances were already pretty entangled, but I think I'd like to explore that option in the future.

Thank you for the clarification. That said, i've very pleased with how these languages turned out in the game. I ended up using 'Atrast nal tunsha' in real life - my friends are not playing DA:O but they know what it means and started to use this themselves.

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but since David Gaider does seem to be with us... In Awakenings, will the game beable to incorporate the current hero's origin story so to speak.

Good to know. I hope Alistair is still around, trying to get my good buddy to woo a woman he likes sounds like it's equally hard work and pretty funny, i really like his comments and attitude

David, when you created the idea of the grey wardens, were you inspired by movies or previous books?

Ive seen the idea of the "not always good hero" before, but it seems some of them are almost evil. Usually its good vs bad, but where did the idea of good and bad vs even worse come from? Do you plan on focusing on this side of the wardens in future books or game content?

I watched the trailer bioware put out for it and Alistair was in it. Looked more like he'll be an NPC though. My first play through We were "in love" and I was to marry him. That's what I mean. If I choose to play that character, how will it all fit in?

Simply cause we suspect Alistair to be an NPc does not mean i can't hope he and others will be back in the party in future expansions/games if they really come, does it?
Maybe David is allowed to tell you if and how your marriage will fit in;)?

I ask this same question about who will be in the expansion. The answer was only one member from your party now, will be with you in Awakening. Which one, they won't tell. You will be getting 5 new members, and will be able to do things with them.

Sure I would love to have the same group, but then I though about it, and it's always fun to develope new friends, and go with there story lines.

Oh no. For an expansion I would love to run in to my old friends. That's part of the antisepation.
