Mr. Ferret, you've got a fan! A whole following of us, actually, methinks!

Andrea the banter between Zevran and Wynne can be very interesting also. Very interesting.
I know. I was listing Zev's banter with my un-usual companions of choice
Zevran's banter is always ridiculously awesome, as someone would say

Although I didn't write any of the companions, I can say it was wonderful writing in the Dragon Age setting. I especially enjoyed writing Master Wade and Herren. People were staring at me when I was writing them and laughing to myself. I'm not mad I tell you. No, the voices tell me I'm quite sane.
"The Companions"... that reminds me.
Based on certain concepts within the world, and a lot of key turns of phrase devs have used here, I'd like to ask just how much the Dragonlance series was an inspiration to you guys. It seems to have a very heavy influence. Clearly "Standard Fantasy" tends to come in a lot of shades of the same color, but there seem to be some uncanny similarities.

All in all, over the entire course of the game, the writing was just superb. A totally immersive experience. Thank you!

Actually, the fact that the player can't participate in the banter was something we couldn't avoid. I would have liked to do it, but the way the engine works you either have the full cutscene-like conversation -- which stops all action and zooms in to provide you with reply options -- or it's ambient dialogue that is going on around you. We didn't want banter to force the player to stop and listen to it if they didn't want to, and there's no way for us to provide response options to ambient dialogue you may not be paying attention to.Ginasue wrote...
Sometimes I wish I could have a say in what is said. Instead of what you have a choice to say, that you had a way to say something yourself to the others. Yet we can't because so many people would say things that maybe just aren't right and it would mess up the game
Glad you enjoyed the banter, however.
Just to point it out, this can't be laid solely at my doorstep -- Sheryl Chee and Mary Kirby are responsible for just as much writing as I was, and some of their stuff is far funnier than mine is.
Mr. Gaider - what about a Mass Effect 'Interrupt' style trigger? You're walking around, party members start chatting, and you get a quick '!' flash in the corner of the screen. Hit a button, and bam - cutscene like conversation. That way you get the best of both worlds - ambient conversation you can listen to and keep walking/ignore completely, or the ability to join in if you have something to say on the subject. Whether or not it's possible, the thought just popped into my head, and I felt the need to write it down.

Did you write the small talk between Alistair and Wynne resp. Zevran and Wynne together then? My favourite was when Alistair wanted Wynne to darn his socks...David Gaider wrote...
I wrote Alistair, Morrigan, Zevran and Shale. Sheryl wrote Leliana, Dog, Wynne and Oghren (although Jay Turner wrote a lot of Oghren as well, I think). Mary wrote Sten and (the spoiler companion). Typically, however, we each wrote of the lot of the other characters in the banter.MrHimuraChan wrote...
Oh, Hi Mr. Gaider! Can you tell us wich characters you wrote? (If you wrote Oghren you deserve a barrel of ale, i'll pay!) My cumpliments again!
My compliment for the German voice acting btw., first time I actually liked it in a computer game.

If there not writen right, then they can ruin a story really fast.
All the writers, each and everyone on the team, brough together ideas that worked well.
When I started this thread it was to thank each and everyone of you for the wonderful story you put together. How you all made it come alive for the rest of us. We not only played the game, but we got involved with the lives, the tells of each character, NPC, etc in the story.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I love most of Oghren's lines conversations, Sten and Morrigan, and Morrigan and Alistair. And who could ever forget Dog with "(Conversational Barking)"? lol
I love the writing, but also many thumbs up for the execution of the dialogue by the VAs

I have to say that the only thing I *WISH* is that my character would speak the prescripted lines - I hate it that the player character has no voice and no expressions with the exception of an eye blink or a nod on occasion.
Devs if you're listening - give our player char a voice!

I love Dog. The modelers and animators deserve props, too. The expression on his face when you talk to him is priceless and the animation when you pet him is perfectly dog-like.Clovis- wrote...

Though, as others have pointed out, it is common to find oneself sticking to the same companions for the main quests, even with subseqent playthroughs, I often will take the time jogging hither and yon across the Proving Bridge in Ozrammar with different companions in order to hear their observations and interconnected banter. Thus far, Wynne-Oghren, Alistair-Sten, Leiliana-Sten, and Morrigan-The Mabari are the most beloved of my pairings. Often Leiliana's "Softy" remark has me giggling in the same child-like and carefree manner as she...not a proud moment for me, and certainly a loss of "Guy" points, but a comical moment none the less.
Simply put, Dragon Age I feel claims victory in drawing one into the story in only a way that some of the greatest works of literary fiction have ever done, via characters who walk, talk, and react to the world around them in ways we can either relate to or find astounding in one regard or another. And, although the aforementioned succeses are something which has come to be expected from the Minds at Bioware, I stand with this Forum in thanking you all none the less for this rich and amazing cast.

Hee hee, I'm glad you liked them. I wrote a lot of the characters in the Denerim Marketplace and some of the folks in the Alienage. And some other stuff here and there. Slim Couldry, Master Ignacio, Ser Landry, and many others. I did a lot of the scripting for them, as well.
You have my dream job, I envy you.
Do you sometimes have character conversations in your head? I find I'm constantly coming up with dialogue or scenarios to various things, be it video game related or my own wild imaginings. It happens mostly when I'm trying to sleep. It seems that when I try to shut my brain off, it kicks into hyperdrive. Incidentally, I have a really terrible sleeping pattern, but I've had some pretty awesome ideas as a result of it so it's not all bad.

It's true BG characters (especially some) were amazingly memorable, but I think it's also about BG being a two game-two expansion series and being based on a well-established world. NOT to underestimate the quality of the writing and imagination of course, just a little factor.
Given enough time to develop the world, I'm sure we'll have more and more memorable characters by bioware once again.
So, thank you. Game world needed someone to show that a game with good graphics can exist with quality content and writing.

We are in the same boat I think - I'm also female and been playing since I was about 20 years old.
My first computer didn't even have a hard drive - it was floppy disks only. I played about every text based game there was (anyone remember Infocom? Zork? I still have them!) The first gui type game I played was Leisure Suit Larry - and I had to swap floppys every time Larry walked from one room to another...ah yeah...fun times....
Man it's cool how far games have come
