Why not give the protagonist a name?

Maybe, when creating our character, we get a list of 15 names or so and we choose one. Hearing others say the character's first name adds something special to it.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, they should let us choose different origins stories. That can add a lot to the story. that's what I really want to see.

That wouldn't work either because it would be impossible to record 15 versions of the same line with each name.   You also can't really use a splice insert method either without it being noticeable.

"Psstt... hey you... come over here.    You are DARREN, right?"

I like being able to change the first name. Helps me roleplay the character. Not that I do that very much. Sometimes I make funny names. It's fun.

BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE TAKING AWAY MY FREE CHOICE AND SUCH AND BE A CLEAR EXAMPLE OF BIOWARE CANONIZING everything AND IT'S JUST BAD AND EVIL AND STINKY AND STUFF.

But yeah I'd like a name too. Calling someone "Inquisitor" at ALL times (which is unlikely since they'll probably have a fixed surname but w/e) is totally weird unless it's role playing. And I mean the kinky kind not the game kind. xp

I've never seen any issue with being called by the surname.  In many cultures including American, a person of high status is called by their surname already.  Politicians, Military, etc.  Its not awkward at all.

A lot of people get called primarily by their last names. I knew a guy whose last name was Mackey so he was habitually called "Mack." I can't even remember his first name because I never used it.

And yeah, I differentiate all my Hawke's based on their personal names... Eirik, Nemanja, Kelly, etc.

I don't mind my character being called by their last name, or a part of their last name.  Like your friend and I also keep track of my characters by the name I give them.  And each one has their own story, I wouldn't like them all to have the same fist name.

I agree completely and i've been thinking the same for quite some time, i don't give two ****s if i can't decide the name as long as they don't call me by my surename or title. Like in DA2 when you had siblings but only you were called Hawke, even by them if remember correctly.

The thing is, if you want NPC's to refer to the protagonist by his/her first name the first name will therefore have to be fixed e.g. John/Jane, since it would be very time consuming and to record lines for all the different first names people can come up with, even if it is only just two or three different names.

But if players want to make their own first name for the protagonist the NPC's will therefore refer to the protagonist by their surname e.g. Shepard, Hawke since no matter what first name they are given, the protagonist will have the same surname and is more time efficient to as well.

In the end I think it would be best if the protagonist is refered to by their surname since it would allow players at least some form of character customization (sp).

Frankly, i like it the way it is. It makes my saves easier to identify (X Hawke is a mage, but Y Hawke is a warrior),

^this, for my PC games, I don't care whether the name is fixed or not, because I can name the save files, but all the big, flashy AAA games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, I play on console.  I like being able to name my characters so that I can tell which Shepard/Hawke/Warden is which.

One of the issues i got with a set first name is that if it's one that i don't really like or it's perhaps the standard John. It's very possible that i'll grow annoyed hearing people calling my character by a name that i don't appreciate or want at all. It would be enough for me to just abandon the game partway through just because of the issues i would have with a set first name

The siblings referred to Hawke as "Brother" or "Sister."  If Bethany writes you a letter from the Circle in Act 2, I believe she calls you by your chosen first name. (I rarely play mages so can't remember if Carver has a corresponding letter.)

Either that or you could just name your character Inquisitor.

I did this with Commander Shepard. It helps that I know a guy named Commander so it isn't weird for me to think of it as a first name. But Inquisitor would be a little weird especially if we aren't playing as the Inquisitor which is assumed but by no means confirmed.

We had Shepard and Hawke, both voiced, and we could name them, but they were never called by their name. I think it would be better if the FULL name was preset, because it would feel less akward to be called by your friends and companions by your first name and not your family name.

I mean who cares if you do not name the char if the family name is set anyway, and your made up name is never used in the game, I mean you can dislike the family name too, but that doesn't change anything.

Thoughts?

Me and my friends have always called eachover by our last names, but I've never experienced any awkwardness in being called Dunstan. I guess that's because I'm used to it, now it's awkward when they call me by my first name (or I call them by theirs) haha.

So going by what I've experienced, just being called Inquistor and his/her last name will be fine for DA:I and not awkward in the slightest.

Also as others have mentioned, setting a first name helps to differentiate your characters and find them easier on the load game list.
Just my humble two pennies. :innocent:

I would definitely prefer a full name, especially if race is already decided. Although Hawke was an excellent last name - very catchy and rolled off the tongue quite easily.

Personally I would prefer to be able to choose my own name and have everyone refer to him as Inquisitor. If it bothers you that most characters dont refer to your character by name then the easy fix is to just name your character Inquisitor and your problems will be solved, works well for my son Gladiator.

In high school, people mangled my first name like teddy bear sucked into a combine. I wouldn't have minded people calling me by my last name at all.

That's also the reason I'm never excited with the idea of my typing my name into the game and the game figuring out how to say it. If humans can't manage it, I doubt a computer can.

I'm called by a myriad of names(my first, middle, nicknames, etc etc) but I'm most comfortable and used to being called by my title of Prince which has become the most widely used. Like being called "The Warden" or "Hawke", its something that you get used to.

So I see no problem with it.

I honestly don't mind , your custom name ultimately means nothing in-game . What I would love is for there to be a handful of first names you could pick from .

Or perhaps something akin to Varric's nicknames.

What exactly makes it impossible? If used sparingly, like only once or twice for the entire game, I don't see how it would be impossible. Some extra work maybe, but not impossible.

I really hope they do allow us to pick a first name from a list and then have it used once or twice during the course of the game during really special moments, like with your LI .

Where I'm from, you never call anyone by their last name. In fact, you only call them by their last name if you don't really like them.

You can guess how awkward I felt when I played Mass Effect the first time. Image IPB

To be honest.... no.
It's part of playing an RPG, to be able to change stuff to your personal preference. And IMHO, being able to customize at least a part of the name is a big part of it....

I agree completely with the above statement.

Personally, I would detest having a "fixed" name. The "fixed" last name is one thing, and I am fine with it. But to take away our first name? Oh, no, I would be VERY upset. I enjoy having multiple characters/saves.  It would greatly reduce the replayability of the game for me if all my chacters were "the same person". And how would I know which save I was loading? It would simply be a mess.:crying:

I had the same experience in NJROTC in high school.  There were people whose last names I knew for years while never learning their first names.
