I've never seen any issue with being called by the surname.  In many cultures including American, a person of high status is called by their surname already.  Politicians, Military, etc.  Its not awkward at all.

And high school.  At least in my neck of the woods....

In my neck of the woods, that was mostly reserved for male teachers addressing male students. If there was a female involved, they used your given name... or tried. As a twin, I got called by the wrong name better than 50% of the time. Apparently, I looked more like my sister than my sister.

Being called by a last name doesn't bother me in the slightest. At least it's the right name.

And you REALLY can't affect your surname in real life either. What does it matter really?

The only thing I found a little akward was when the LIs used Sheps and Hawkes last names the same as all the other characters did. They should just add a nickname the LI uses when they become a couple, like they did with "Siha" for Thane in ME2. It makes the connection between Shep and Thane feel a lot more personal and deep, I always loved that about his romance.

That sounds like a good idea.

Yes you can.  Find someone with a good surname and marry them.

(Or just change your name)

Forget a name, the protagonist shall just be refered to as "Hey you" for the entire game.

In my high school it depended on the person's first name. If you were one of many Barts, people would call you buy your surname to avoid confusion. I went to school with my identical twin, so most people called me by my last name or VDP, the acronym of my surname.

I would be happy if they fixed the full name. Because I only care about choices the game actively acknowledges, and they don't acknowledge custom names.

Technically you don't get to choose your first name either.  Or what you look like.  And if magic existed, you wouldn't be able to decide at birth if you were gonna be attuned to it.

Lets not go down that road.  This is supposed to be an RPG after all.  Mandatory surnames are fine if theres a point to it narratively.  Beyond that, the more choice the better.

I like the idea of a set first name. When Hawke introduced himself by "I'm Hawke" when his brother was standing right next to him, it just took me completely out of the game. There are conditions where a first name could be very useful to have.

That said, there needs to be some way to differentiate saves. Middle names? Choose our own names for each character's folder? Randomly assigned star constellations?

If you need to use either first or last name of the person you're saying that to when having a personal private bedroom conversation with then something is probably very wrong, Honey.

Bioware completely overused saying 'Hawke' as it was. Like you weren't smart enough to figure out someone was talking to you (when they spent the entire conversation staring directly into your face) if they didn't say it every sentence.

In the real world the only time most names are ever called out is when trying to get the attention of someone you're not having a direct conversation with, or as a formality. And a title works just fine in almost any situation like that.

I hate most things being fixed. Fixed race, fixed gender, fixed background, I would hate to have a fixed name as well. Everyone who ever played the game has the same name? Every character I make all have the same names? No. Heck no. I don't mind being called a title or a surname and I think BW has done a good job of not making it akward.

This is true.   Even in real life, a first name is actually too formal for someone really intimate to you.   How many times has your significant other really use your name?   Its always, Hon, Honey, Baby, or whatever pet names you might have for each other.

If you do multiple playthroughs with multiple types of characters having different first names makes it a lot easier to distinguish them. I imagine it would be a little annoying importing a character into Mass Effect 3 and picking the one out of five Jane Shepards that you want to use.

I also sometimes alternate between characters when I'm playing games. I'll get a little tired of playing my goody-two-shoes scientist in Fallout: New Vegas and switch to my evil assassin for a while. Having different names on the saves is handy for that, and it's even more handy to have the system where you pick from your characters then the save files for that character (something Bioware games tend to do and other games often don't.) Keeps things organized.

We had Shepard and Hawke, both voiced, and we could name them, but they were never called by their name. I think it would be better if the FULL name was preset, because it would feel less akward to be called by your friends and companions by your first name and not your family name.

I mean who cares if you do not name the char if the family name is set anyway, and your made up name is never used in the game, I mean you can dislike the family name too, but that doesn't change anything.

Thoughts?

First it's "Oh so what if they're voiced?" now it's "Why not just have their entire name set?" what's next "Oh so what if we can't choose dialogue?"?

Final Fantasy is way ahead of you (crafty Japanese) they've already gotten to "So what if we can't control combat."
I hear in Final Fantasy XV they aren't going to let the player do anything except pause and save.

There really should be more nicknames and pet names being used.

We know the character is talking to us, we don't need our name repeated every single time.

I'm not a fan of fixed names, but letting you pick a middle name to use for saves would fix this problem.

It grated in DA2 because Hawke is the only person referred to by surname. In that sense it was awkward to me. Had the rule been applied to other characters I could have accepted it more readily, but it wasn't, so it was obvious for what it was.

Why not give the protagonist a name?

I like to imprint my characters with their own identities and I will likely be annoyed if such an option is stripped from me.

/Opinion.

Yes, but honestly if my last name was Hawke in real life, that WOULD be how most of my friends would likely call me.     Hawke is a surname that lends itself easily as a nickname.    Being called by your surname isn't as likely if it also isn't something easily said.

For me, Hawke was just as much a nickname as a surname.   Varric called pretty much everyone by a nickname.

It's a bad idea.

Hawke was overused in conversations in DA2, but the family name had a purpose in the end because the protagonist's family was actually present. Same for some of the Origins in the first game. In that way a family name can be used to further connect the PC to the world through family ties, though many of us would prefer to have more options.

Taking away first name choice solely for ease of reference to the character... Not comparable and unnecessarily strips out a means of customizing the character with next to zero benefit.
