Disagree, though you have a point being refered to by loved ones as "the warden" is a bit odd, with hawke it wasn't weird. As already listed im sure many individuals get called by their last names amongst my collegues I am one of those people. My closest loved ones call be my first name, my closest  friend calls me by a title i resent and everyone else calls me by last name. its very normal to be refered to by a title or last name, especially when you have a very social life.

Although I love the idea of somebody addressing me by my first name, i think i would prefer it if my character had a name that i personally give him/her. One of the reasons why i love the Dragon Age franchise is mainly because the game is based off of MY character that i created (not everything is mine. of course).
Great question.
Thank you :)

Again and again - they DID came up with the technology. Here: http://text-to-speec...translator.net/
Type anything you want, anything! It will read it in a voice of your choice.

I do not know how complicated the program is. But it does exist and does not require and actor to pronounce every word by himself.

Ok, there are emotions that probably difficult to implement for machine. Fine. Then I am with those who request a nick-name or first name. When LI calls Fem!Hawke "Hawke" in love scene - it's so wrong.

I gave that site a try......

Ugh, if the ingame voices sounded like that I wouldn't buy it.  Even just having a first name injected into a sentence with that would totally break immersion.

Wow really?  Why don't you tell the friend to stop?

Here, you said it yourself. Even in that weird world of yours where close friends call each other by titles and family names your LOVED one calls you by your first name. And our poor Warden, Shepard and Hawek do not have that luxury.

That site is just an example with someones voices, Sure they can program it to sound like VAs. Emotions are still the problem, though, this is why I say first name would solve it. Actually, the title and the first name would be a solution, with the possibility to give our protagonist never mentioned family name.

It doesn't matter in they make it sound like the same accent/tone/timbre whatever as the VAs.  It will still come out very mechanical sounding.  The technology isn't there yet.

While I enjoy games that give choice I only really care about choices that have an actual impact on the content of the game, and giving your character a first name doesn't have any impact.

It is weird to be called by your surname constantly. Despite what other people have said I have never had people call me by my surname in my life in person, or at least very rarely. And while surnames may be used more frequently formally it sounds very out of place in more emotional situations.

However one large flaw with this suggestion is that one of the reasons they use surnames/titles is that they are gender neutral. Introduce a different first name for a male and female PC and you double the dialogue where they are referenced by name. Although I suppose I'm not sure how much he/she's do this already. One way around this would be a gender neutral name for both the male and female PC.

I've never seen any issue with being called by the surname.  In many cultures including American, a person of high status is called by their surname already.  Politicians, Military, etc.  Its not awkward at all.

And high school.  At least in my neck of the woods....

Same here... heck my girlfriend of over a year calls me by my last name.

Im'm ok with sticking to the surname in these games. In fact giving the character a first name would really just hurt trying to make the character mine.

Noooo way! It would make me completely detatched from my character from the start. I'd be playing some premade stranger not my own character.

But that Hawke (last name in general) thing is pretty jarring for me. In my culture it's considered RUDE to call people by their last names, other than in military. It makes me feel unpleasant to encounter it in the game.

The best way I see this going is make the main character earn some name early in the game. Or have since forever.

Be it because they were born the day some star fell and so they're now called <whatever> because they have a shiny spot on their nose because of that. Anything like that would be great for me.

In such case you could have your name customized by the player and when NPCs would address you buy the nickname it wouldn't sound rude in ears like mine, but on the contrary - more like a pet name. Which would be nice.

Some people find it easier to believe they are the character if the can fully customise him/her, I get it but I don't agree but whatever.

I would love NPC's to refer to you with your first name, but I don't want a preset name. As others have said, I actually refer to my different characters by their custom names, asit helps me seperate their personalities. For example, It would feel weird playing a evil character on the 2nd playthrough with the same name as my heroic character on the 1st playthrough.

Haven't other games pulled off programs that pronounce custom names, though?

I like the 15 preset names idea... if it's not too difficult to implement. Otherwise, a unique term of endearment from different LI's would suffice. I wouldn't want too much time being taken to accommodate this where it could be spent elsewhere enriching the game.

In my eyes, naming my own character is one of several things which, in my eyes, are required to consider a game part of the roleplaying genre. I'm not particularly fond of not being able to choose my character's surname, but, provided there is a story-driven reason for it I can make peace with the surname being set.

I'm tired of roleplaying elements being dumbed down or completely eliminated for the sake of keeping things simple for people who are too busy or too incapable to figure them out. Default values are more than sufficient for these individuals to make due, there's no reason to punish the rest of us.

I still think the last name should be You, that opens so many amusing possibilities.

If allowing us to use a first name in a game is just a matter of using too many resources, why doesn't Bioware allow just one name for the dog, like Fido, or Killer, and then just use the extra zots to give players a chance to use a first name? Just think how many dog names they must have to contend with, which could be used for the pc's name.

Actually, if one neutral name for both protagonists is a problem, then nick-name would do. This topic is more about family name being used in an inappropriate situations then about having a preset first name.

Anything else as addition to the title and family name - nick name, pet name, use something like "friend", "love" and so on - ad everyone in this thread will be happy.

The only thing I found a little akward was when the LIs used Sheps and Hawkes last names the same as all the other characters did. They should just add a nickname the LI uses when they become a couple, like they did with "Siha" for Thane in ME2. It makes the connection between Shep and Thane feel a lot more personal and deep, I always loved that about his romance.

That is an excellent point, and something I loved about Thane's romance arc as well. For me, The only time it gets awkward for companions to use our title or last name is when your romantic partner is using them. Sounds to me like Nette found the perfect solution :D

YESS! let them put a cute nickname on the PC when they're in a romance with him/her.Image IPB

I think this is probably the best solution. Being called "Siha" by Thane did add a personal connection to the romance.

Am I wrong or did Anders refer to Hawke as "Love" several times?

They could just give you a few preset names at the start of the game you could choose for your character.
