I haven't been able to find this info anywhere:
1) Which merchant offers the best prices for you to buy things?
2) Which merchant will offer the most money for the things you sell?
3) Does the merchant that buys highest also charge highest for what you buy from him?
4) Similarly, does the merchant that offers the least when he buys from you likewise sell to you at the lowest prices?

I know for a fact that there is a W_I_D_E range of prices out there.  For instance, you can buy a backpack from the Ostagar Quartermaster for just 57 silver.  In contrast, Bodahn in your camp -- who actually brags about the discount he's giving you -- will charge you 7 gold + 50 silver.  (**Prices may vary by Hero type.**)  That is a HUGE difference between the two, given how stingy DAO is with money.

5) Does anything affect the prices offered/charged?  I had thought that the Dwarven Merchant's belt would affect your bargaining ability, but according to the DA wiki (http://dragonage.wik...Merchant's_Belt), the belt does NOTHING.  (Other than cost you whatever you paid to buy it.)

I'm not sure of much else, but I believe you can cycle through companions at most stores and see what effect that has on prices; this may not work with Bodahn, though.

I haven't paid a lot of attention, but I have noticed that camp prices seem higher. I found the belt and have my PC wearing it until I find somethiing better. While I'm not sure, I think I'm finding more coin on corpses. Of course that may just be an effect of having just patched the game this playthrough.

I find that if I approach with any party non-Hero, the cutscene shows only the Hero conducting the transaction.  This suggests to me that any and all transactions are ONLY between the Hero and the merchant.

I believe that it was mentioned that the latest patch did, in fact, favorably affect the amount of money found on corpses.

I _believe_ that if you were Save prior to looting a body, then loot it while wearing the belt, and then reLoad and loot again while NOT wearing the belt, the amount would be exactly the same.  I am eager to hear if anyone has actually tested this theory and what the results were.

[Hmm.  What if EVERY corpse check was a random check, like checking "goody huts" in Civilization?  If a player was particularly greedy, he would Save/reLoad until he got a "reasonable" amount of loot off of EVERY corpse.  Hmm.]

Yes the +money equip effect doesn't work on monster drops. It only effects quest money. There is however a mod recently released that fixes this bug and allows it to work on coin drops from enemies.

Remember, you can adjust the prices at a specific merchant by selling him Personal Documents and Trade Manifests. If you hoard those and sell them all to one merchant, you should see significantly lower prices.

Oooooo!  I was wondering what those were good for!  Thanks for that info!.  (Must sell those ONLY to Bodahn, as he is the merchant I access most often.)

I've tested this trade manifest thing, and I don't think it works. I did think so a long time ago, but after much time in game, I doubt it now. I know Bodhan's prices never go down. Check the price on say, the axe he sells. No matter what you do, no matter what character you have, it's always the same across all playthroughs. So, no. Private docs just get you a little coin when you sell them.

Sale prices to merchants don't seem to vary, only purchase prices. I'm not sure why you can buy a backpack in Ostagar so cheap, I always buy 1 before I go into the wilds, and another at night, since its really a different merchants. All other merchants remember what you sell them.

Its best to buy your concentrators, corruptors, and the other one... from the bar tender in Gnawed Noble Tavern in Denerim, they are cheapest there.

In general, if someone other than Bodahn or Sandal sells unlimited quantities, they have a decent price.

Lyrium is cheapest at the Circle Tower.

Ruck has the best price on deep mushrooms

Varathorn has the best prices on toxin extract, elfroot and deathroot

The well connected bartender has the best prices on concentrator, corruptor and distillation

Figor has the best price on flasks

Belin has the best trap trigger prices.

A good rule of thumb is that if a dwarven merchant promises you a discount, you aren't getting one. The only exception I know of to that is Figor.

For selling, the best person in game is Gorim, but only if you are of dwarven noble origin.

If you want the maximum amount of cash without cheating, dwarven noble is the way to go. You can have 25+ gold from the get go. You can sell for about twice what anyone else can.

All that is quite useful.

Does "Belin" = "Barlin", in Lothering?

Actually, Dwarven Merchants pay more for Gems.  Emeralds are sold for 50 silver to dwarven merchants (original is 10 silver I think).

If this is wrong, please ignore my ignorant ramblings

For Selling: You can check the worth of an item by looking at it's description. Selling items will always give you 25% of the item's worth (exception might be Gorim for a noble dwarf, did't check that myself). Can be useful when you have to decide what items you should get rid of if your inventory full in the middle of a dungeon AGAIN.

Anyway, since the value of an item is fixed, comparing the price a merchant wants for it to the actual worth in the description might give you a general idea whether the merchant is cheaper or more expensive than he should be. Again, the item needs to be in the MERCHANT's inventory, not your own since the selling value is fixed!!!

Disclaimer: I THINK this should work as you can check the item description even in your inventory when no merchant is nearby. But since I never buy much besides unique items I never tried this method myself.

EDIT: Ok, just checked it. It DOES work. Bodhan is prety expensive, charging you with 50% more than any item is actually worth. Some other merchants I've checked so far sell items at 120% of their worth. Have yet to find anyone who sells at 100% or less.

Question: You can request a reward from Lord Dace in Orzammar and he tells you that you'll get a discount from some surface merchants for mentioning him. I've never found any merchant who "knows" him, however. Is he just blowing smoke?

There's a merchant just outside the Orzammar front gate,to the right.  Going into Orzammar, you can talk to the merchant, but you can't buy/sell with him.  Maybe he's the referred to merchant?  Since I've never worked for Bhelen (the lying, thieving, murdering bastard!), I've never been able to check that possibility out.

Thread necro...

Is there anyone who *has* found any actual discount/benefit at any Dwarven merchant after talking to Lord Dace in the Deep Roads? Or is this simply another "not implemented" feature...

I think Lord Dace's discount means as much as Bodahn's discount. The man's a politician, and one whose finances are delicate. He deals in promises whenever and wherever he can.

So, no, no discounts for anyone.

Also don't get excited over the idea that you don't have to pay Ruck. He may say that, but you still have to pay the same price as before. <_< Bastard

Actually I'm pretty sure the belt DOES do something - It seems to increase your monetary gain from monster drops when you have it in your inventory.  No need to equip it  (much like Anerins Token for Wynn).  The reason people think it does nothing is because they test it by equiping/unequiping it.   All the testing I read on it involved equiping/unequiping it.   Thus it was still in their inventory giving them a bonus regardless.  It's also hard to prove since treasure is generated randomly so that 5% is really hard to see.

How??? I saw this and rolled a Dwarven Noble.  I got lots of great gear, but then it was all stripped away.  Also, there are lots of locked doors in the palace that my Deft Hands and 25 Cunning could not open.

By the time I got to Ostagar I had 3.7 gold, and when I sold the stuff I didn't need I only had 4.7 gold!

@Mikkahl - There's a chance right at the end of that origin story, to support a noble (Lord Dace perhaps?) who wants more trade with the surface and needs to talk to King Endrin. If you agree to support him and ask him for hard currency, he gives you a promissory note worth 25 sovereigns.

Like everyone i didn't paid too much attention (mostly because with herbalism you can make tons of money) but Bodhan prices are +15%...
