If you want the maximum amount of cash without cheating, dwarven noble is the way to go. You can have 25+ gold from the get go. You can sell for about twice what anyone else can.

How??? I saw this and rolled a Dwarven Noble.  I got lots of great gear, but then it was all stripped away.  Also, there are lots of locked doors in the palace that my Deft Hands and 25 Cunning could not open.

By the time I got to Ostagar I had 3.7 gold, and when I sold the stuff I didn't need I only had 4.7 gold!

Spoilers follow:

Lord Dace offers you 100 gold to take his side. Do so and he gives you a promissory note for 100 gold. Sell the note to a merchant for 25 gold. You can also sell your gear (since it won't matter anyway). The DLC stuff should show up in a chest (but there are reports that that is still bugged). Later, Gorim (your former second) will be a merchant in the square in Denerim. He will buy stuff from you at twice what everyone else will.

Ah, thanks! I did get the note from Dace, but I figured it was worthless, because he said to cash it in "after the battle" (heh!). I also got 3 gold for siding with the scholar, and probably a few more for selling gear! I wish I could sell the scouts gear, but there's no merchant out there! :)

I wonder if it's safe to sell the DLC dragon plat armor for 4 gold, since I have to do the "workaround" to get it back anyway! :) (Didn't see the DLC gear in a chest, unless it's in Ostagar maybe?)

Dace's discount is a lie.

Dace's discount isn't a discount and it's not a lie.

There are 2 things that a dwarf noble gets. Side with Dace. Get his promissory note. Now, what mousestalker says but in more detail:

RIGHT AWAY. Before you get your brother. Right after you walk out the door of the feast, immediately, go out of the house back to the Diamond Quarter where the merchants are (for your birthday). Sell the promissory note to one of THOSE merchants. Sell anything else you won't need for the darkspawn hunt the next day (keep your armor and main weapons you'll still need them).

You must do this before you get your brother. Because once you do, it's light's out, and the story moves on. You'll have 25 gold sovereigns from that note alone.

NOW go do what your father the king asks...get your brother. Story moves on. Finish your origin story and go through Ostagar.

After Ostagar, after Lothering...after your first visit to the camp, when the rest of the world opens up to you, you can now go to Denerim (remember, Gorim said he's headed there after his exile) you'll find him where he's standing no matter what origin you play..except he'll acknowledge you (though your squad doesn't seem to notice) and offers you a "discount." In reality, it means he'll pay twice what everyone else will pay for anything you sell. And probably discount what you buy but I don't know about that.

So you start Ostagar with 25 gold plus you can visit Gorim and sell your blood dragon armor for 8 80 and whatever else you made it out with....

Beware, though, of that knight standing near Gorim who will recognize you and challenge you to a duel. Unless you have 3 persuade, you won't be able to take him down and he's a tough fight.

That's the whole, spoilerful version. I've done it multiple times and it works. But you MUST play that Dace thing correctly. If you double cross him, nothing. See the Wikia for exact dialogs.

Most prices for items that you sell are locked, in that you will always receive the same price regardless of who you sell to (excluding the dwarf noble origin & Gorim/Dace). The only merchant that does NOT mark up his prices (meaning he will not exceed the listed item's value), is Figor in Orzammar, who will open up his shop about halfway through the Harrowmont/Bhelen quest. That being said, if your intent is to sell gear to upgrade and repurchase, this character is your best bet.
