Mass Effect: Terminus

Draft for a possible stand alone RPG experience, which could
easily be extended into a trilogy.

SETTING

Four years after Commander Shepard defeated the reapers the
galaxy is still rebuilding. While the Citadel and the Mass Relays have been
repaired, the galaxy is in disarray. The council has lost much of its
control over the galaxy. This change in balance has led to a power grab by many
people and groups, all trying to rule their own little part of the galaxy.  While these factions choose to wage war and
bicker, the scoundrels of the galaxy find their fortune. Smugglers,
mercenaries, and pirates alike have found profit in these events. Unbeknownst
the citizens of the galaxy, there is something much sinister afoot than a few
skirmishes across they galaxy.

THE PROTAGONIST

Unlike Commander Shepard of the
original three games, our protagonist is the Captain of a Pirate ship out in
the Terminus system.  This however does
not necessarily make them restricted to Renegade. Many pirates and smugglers in
both history and fiction had a code of honor. In the case of the protagonist,
their moral and ethics as a “scoundrel of the galaxy” is as always defined by
the Player. I took the inspiration of this character from Han Solo from Star
Wars. While this is because I usually play as a Paragon who makes Renegade
decisions, I feel like that as a character, Han Solo could have become a
ruthless SOB instead of the charming Smuggler he has been known as.

I believe that instead of playing
as a solider of the Alliance and a Spectre, such is the case in the original
games, playing as a character with a less than credible background allows for a
richer role playing experience, sometimes forcing the character to think about
the hard decisions a little more, rather than making something so cut and dry.  Instead of their being choices such as, save
the council, or kill the council, the player is put in more situations with
less importance, that all together affect the outcome, instead of one or two
really big decisions.  For example, the
four big decisions in Mass Effect seem to be, kill or talk down Wrex, sacrifice
Ash or Kaidan, spare or kill the rachni, and finally save the council or leave
them to die. All of these decisions are big decisions of life or death. In the
case of the rachni and the Council there is more so a “good vs. evil” decision
(in my opinion of course, yours may differ). The Protagonist of this game would
rather have more choices like, smuggle supplies past a blockade to aid
colonist, or accept a bribe from those imposing the blockade. While the player
would be able to make one or two decisions like this either way with no
repercussions, a player who chose a majority of paragon decisions would see
these colonist begin to fight back against and eventually repel their
oppressors, with renegade leading to the colonist eventually being put under
the tyrannical rule of such oppressors. This does not leave out neutral
characters, for a character that tries to play equal renegade and paragon would
see the conflict at a standstill instead. This is of course a rough example
that needs refining, but the point of this is that the player’s decisions do
matter, without having to be something as extreme as life or death.

SQUAD MATES

Jho’nut

Jho’nut is a batarian slaver that the protagonist rescues
from near death at the beginning of the game. He begrudgingly owes a life debt
to the protagonist and becomes a member of their crew. After the Hegemony was
eradicated by the Reaper invasion, there has been a split in batarian idealism,
with some still conforming to the old ways, while others have become more open
and accepting of other members of the galaxy. Jho’nut however is a member of
the former. Through the course of the game the protagonist gains insight on batarian
culture from Jho’nut while convincing him to rethink his beliefs, or further
encouraging his current ideals.

I took the name of this character
from the famous Canadian Pirate John Nutt. I feel like the next Mass Effect
game needs a batarian squad mate so he is really the first character I really
fleshed out. His abilities I have based off of the Batarian Sentinel for the
most part, probably because he is my favorite of the batarian kits at the
moment.

Weapon proficiency:

Snipers

Assualt Rifles

Powers:

Submission Net

Shockwave

Frag Grenades

Batarian Pirate

Fitness

This is all that I have really completely brainstormed and
have a good idea of what I want from the story, so I thought I would share with
everyone to see what people thought so far. If people seem to like the idea I
will add some more to it.

Ideas that need more thinking:

  • A Krogan/Turian Alliance led by Urdnot Wrex at war with a splinter krogan faction who wants revenge for the Genophage. Or if you killed Wrex, and the Genophage was cured, Wreav would be waging war while the splinter faction will be allied with the Turians. If you killed wrex and and sabotaged the Genophage then it would simply be a Krogan Turian war.
  • A political cold war between the two batarian ideals.
  • A Spectre who is after the protagonist for an action intheir past (based on their psychological profile) who has the potential tobecome a squadmate.
  • Potentially a Reaper Cult who are trying to build a new Reaper?
All of these ideas of course are just subject to change and
could easily become something else or completely change. Tell me what you
think!

i think this is a good idea, you're right about us needing to play a character who doesnt necessarily have the fate of the world in their hands. i do like the idea of a batarian squadmate, and your story, while still needing developpement, is a great start.

keep working on it :D

Really cool idea. You need to fix the formatting in the OP though. Kinda difficult to read.
