I was thinking about buying the Mass Effect trilogy for my PC laptop.  Is playing the games difficult with a laptop keyboard and mouse?  I'm so used to using a controller.

I think it'll take some time for you to transition, but it's pretty easy (and I've got very few gaming skills:D). Srsly though, except for cover and sprint being the same buttons (space), no issues (pc rocksB)). Good luck with it!

I find it way easier on PC then on XBOX, sniping with the mouse makes wonders!

As someone who recently made a very similar transition I've been unable to leave behind my controller. For two main reasons, First my laptop is on a stand right near my bed so leaning over the keyboard to play a game isn't really comfortable, and second the laptop gets hot so it can get kind of annoying (by the way since you're getting a gaming laptop buy a $20 laptop cooler or a $60 one if it's in your budget and make sure to monitor your laptops internal temp for a while to get an idea of its limits. At the very least you want to to try keep it below 80 degrees C). And third, yeah third old habits are hard to break.

As a result shortly after I got my PC I bought an XBOX 360 PC Controller (really a PC receiver with a 360 controller that allows the controller to work for both) and a program for something like $20 called Pinnacle Game Profiler where I was able to download a profile for Mass Effect 3. Also quick side note, while many console PC ports are readily compatible with 360 PC controller setup the Mass Effect series is not one of them hence the need for a controller profiler.

Basically what it does is it assigns keyboard buttons to the controller. So in messing around with it right now I got the '1' key assigned to A. Right Bumper is space bar. Right trigger is Left click and Left Trigger is Right Click. The left analog stick is mapped out to cover the traditional W-A-S-D layout and the right analog stick functions as the mouse. I had to work around with the configuration but now it's a virtual carbon copy of the console layout.

It's not the smoothest transition in regards to Mass Effect mainly because the weapon select and biotics screen was designed for a mouse not a controller (you'll see when you get it) but it still works for me. If you use the keyboard full time though you can map a lot more abilities to use on the fly (~8) where in the PS3/360 version you could only really map 3.

Either way in the end the real problem might be to many options.

So to sum up:
-Get a laptop cooler
- If you don't like the idea of a keyboard get a 360 PC controller and Pinnacle Gaming Profiler
- The Mass Effect series on PC is not directly compatible with PC game controllers
- PC has a ton of customization options especially when it comes to configuration. Find what works for you.

Side Note: If you buy games digitally Steam is a great place to start but I always make sure to check Amazon first as sometimes their digital downloads are cheaper then Steam.  Though in the end theres rarely a big difference.  At most you'll get "hosed" $5 to $10 because you didn't shop around which as we all know use to be a weeks pay at the start of the previous century.

Either way welcome to the club.  Now you get to point and laugh like a jackhole elitist at console gamers while listing the specs of your ultra powerful machine.  I7 2.3ghz, 8MB Ram, NVidia GeForce GT650m, 1 TB hard drive.  :P

Only ever played it on PC so for me it isn't difficult at all. Quick access to your powers (either via the shift key or 1-2-3 etc.) and precision shooting with your mouse...and I guess probably also faster camera movement?

Only thing that can be annoying at times is the run/cover/interact spacebar really.

lose the mouse put in a tracking ball - incredible increase in your reaction time and control.
