I am not sure about ME3.
But "Strafe walking" in unreal tournament is not the same as walking sideways.... its just referred to as strafe walking because "dodging" in unreal tournament is called "strafing".
In UT... you double press your movement keys to perform a leap/dodge/strafe in that direction.
What people do on Unreal tournament is they flick their view 90 degrees to the left or right very quickly, then flick it back whilst at the same time double pressing their OPPOSITE movement key from the direction they just turned to. So if you turn your mouse to the left, then you double press your right movement key (while still pressing your forward movement key) and you quickly bring your view back to the direction you are heading in, you travel forward in a short leap and after the camera has returned to the proper direction (near instantaneously) your character continues moving forward.
You can repeat this in quick succession, the "dodge forward" allows you to cover more ground faster in unreal tournament than just conventionally running in a straight line. Gives an even more pronounced effect when done down hill, a decent speed increase when done on flat terrain, and slows you down when done uphill.
I have not tested it in ME3, but I think that using a dodge move on a character causes you to move at the same speed or slower than you would sprint, as there is usually a recovery time period on using your dodge move before you can begin to sprint, I don't think its possible to replicate strafe walking in ME3.
