Got New Vegas from my little bro....just what I asked for. It's my first run...any suggestions on a fun build? I did Fallout 3 with a laser weapon, lockpicking, small weapon build. I'm thinking of only having one gun focus this time, but I'm keeping my lockpicking. As a thorough looter, its an essential.

Also, I have some questions. Without dlc, and a thorough playthrough, how many hours will I get? Fallout 3 got me 110 or so, which was kind of surprisingly low, especially since I don't fast travel. Also, will hardcore mode feel like a Dark Souls in the Mojave? Might do it. Thanks!

Now I must avoid Deathclaws at level 2...unlike Fallout 3 :P

I recommend Hardcore personally (if you didn't already start out so). It's not quite as hardcore as I would have liked, but it's fun thinking that you need to keep some food and water on hand.

I'm fairly "standard" in my build for first playthrough. I pick guns, repair, and survivalist for my first playthrough and enjoyed it a lot. Also had some speech and science. With repair, you can make superior ammunition for your guns, which I loved in its own right. Spent hours and hours buying and crafting better ammo.

I recommend the DLC if you are able to afford it.

Head shot by Anti-Material Sniper Rifle ... best damage ever.

Almost. The YCS/186 does more damage. The YCS also uses more standard rounds and handles more easily, making it a REALLY unfair gun. Not quite as unfair as the insane MF Hyperbreeder Alpha, but close.

Explosive rounds are fun though. Not sure if they beat the YCS with overcharged rounds though, but at this point it doesn't even matter anymore. Things just die.

I think if you factor in the crit damage bonus, the AMR will end up doing more damage (although you can only guarantee the crit with a sneak attack)
