Why Sneak when you can be unstoppable?
Guns are diverse but ammo is a pain
Melee weapons are fun.. until Deathclaws
Specializing in Explosives is generally impractical, they are the "bailout" weapons
Brotherhood of Steel kick ass
Don't be afraid to be "evil"

I'm fairly "standard" in my build for first playthrough. I pick guns, repair, and survivalist for my first playthrough and enjoyed it a lot. Also had some speech and science. With repair, you can make superior ammunition for your guns, which I loved in its own right. Spent hours and hours buying and crafting better ammo.
I recommend the DLC if you are able to afford it.

That's crazy, with the right perks, everything else is too easy to kill with melee weapons. Sure, fighting deathclaws with a knife is really hard, and you'll probably die a few times before you get it right, but that's what makes it fun!Volus Warlord wrote...

Well, to kill Deathclaws with my power-armored dude, I would headshot them with a gauss cannon loaded with max charges at line-of-sight distance from sneak. (This is actually overkill). See first, shoot first, kill before they can do anything.
It was challenging but dem Deathclaws dropped like rag dolls.
And do NOT go hardcore your first time around.

That sounds really boring though, it's more fun to sneak up on them with an assassain suit (because stealth suits are too noisy and use up all your med-x) and chop them in to pieces with a giant sword.Volus Warlord wrote...

It was effective though. I shot one in the arm and it died in one hit. I was so happy to not have to actually fight those damn things.

Why would you be happy you don't have to fight death claws? Fighting deathclaws is fun!Volus Warlord wrote...

Because they either 1-shot you or they leave you with low health and half your limbs crippled.
And limbs are a pain in the ass on Hardcore.

Head shot by Anti-Material Sniper Rifle ... best damage ever.
He flew back about 10 metres before his body hit the ground. It was glorious.

Nah, you can hit them freehand but have to have a bit of patience. I sneak in from a distance, set Ratslayer's aim to a spot where they frequently circuit. Their flight patterns are predictable when they're not fighting. Then you more anticipate than aim. Of course you don't always have the luxury of sniping from a distance. I keep lots of antivenom on hand.legion999 wrote...
Jesus. ****ing. Christ. Cazadores are the worst enemies in the game. They're impossible to hit without VATS. Though second place goes to Tunnelers.
Also was I the only one who though sympathy mean the, slightly, OP bloatfly in Old World Blues?
As far as builds, my "canon" character and most fun is a Great Khan castout who's a melee character mostly, is a drug and poison cook.

Almost. The YCS/186 does more damage. The YCS also uses more standard rounds and handles more easily, making it a REALLY unfair gun. Not quite as unfair as the insane MF Hyperbreeder Alpha, but close.
Explosive rounds are fun though. Not sure if they beat the YCS with overcharged rounds though, but at this point it doesn't even matter anymore. Things just die.

So I take it no dart gun this time?
I don't remember a dart gun, but there's a fully automatic nail gun. It's quite fun to use

First Deathclaw encounter was a blind deathclaw. No matter. I ran and met my demise. Curse you, level 3!!! I will have my revenge!!

I think if you factor in the crit damage bonus, the AMR will end up doing more damage (although you can only guarantee the crit with a sneak attack)

I'm playing with low level items right now because, well, I'm low level. Excited to get my hands on higher level items. I'll have to look into the ammo crafting more.

Pro-Tip:
Stealing is FAR more profitable this time around, as many organizations have lots of quality guns locked away. Of particular note, you'll soon arrive at this little town called Novac, and I highly suggest you break into the storage closet of the store after dark. Nothing like a Minigun, but still a nice little bonus.

Also, using guns allows me to use some of the guns I have in real life, which is kind of neat. Hunting shotgun FTW!
