So you want it to be an FPS?  No thanks.

I think it was a request for realism.

Sniping had some meaning... and VATS... whatever happened to it in NV? Pretty much useless for long range sniping (where I do a lot of the fighting) and only slightly more usefull at mid-range. The VATS improving perks are a huge dissapointment, as the bulk of the combat takes place real-time anyway.

I see this as different priorities of the teams.  With Iron Sights, they're signaling they prefer freehand aiming.  Sniping is still ridiculously fun.  With Boone's and ED-E's perks, you can take things out from incredible range.

I started with 7 intelligence and went to 8 with my first perk.

I wonder if in future Fallout games they will level skills with use and expand perks.

May cause pandemonium...

Umm, yeah. I snipe a lot with my trusty Laser Rifle. Occasionaly with the YCS. But that's done real-time. VATS long range accuracy is abyssmal, so VATS is pretty useless.

Nah, VATS sniping is useless. VATS is not. You get a crit bonus in VATS and a damage reduction too I believe. With a good character you rarely miss at mid to close range. VATS is really good for those moments when things get too close for comfort.

Yeah, as a panic button of sorts, okay.
I use it too a bit at mid-close range. But have to be careful with Plasma weapons at close quarters with the Meltdown perk (I use Fook and that limits the effect of Meltdown to plasmas). Often in VATS the enemy will close the distance as I shoot... and that can be very dangerous with Meltdown.

I must say I cannot understand why they took away the VATS aiming using melee or unarmed.

It's useful for melee, especially the special attacks.  Chance's Knife Backslash is a staple for my melee character.

Yes, the damage is doubled, I think (same as power attacks). Plus it's safer then a hectic close-quarters combat.

But you used to be able to aim at body parts in melee. Can't understand why that's no longer possible.

Yeah I encountered two. I knew I was screwed when four V.A.T. strikes would only eliminate max 2 HP from them. Those buggers better enjoy their supremacy for now...because I'm going to squish them later :P

You can get good karma just by killing fiends.

If I had to complain about anything it's how stupidly easy it is to get good karma. Killing fiends and ghouls shouldn't award any karma. They attack on sight. Now Powder Gangers, Legionaires, and the like I can understand since you start the game neutral to them and can join or fight them as your actions call for.

But things that are naturally hostile to you shouldn't award any karama either way.

I agree. You shouldn't gain karma by killing something or someone that would attack first, irrespective of your alignment.

What I thought was hilarious is that stealing from some groups can get you bad karma, but slaughtering that same group can get you good karma.

Apparently it's cool to kill people, but not to take their stuff.

No, not as a panic button. I admit I do not have perfect aim and can't score consistent headshots on a moving target. With VATS, I can. If that's not useful enough, you have the crit chance bonus and damage reduction as well.

I use it a lot at close to mid range and it works just fine for me. The total crit bonuses you can get from some laser weapons is just nuts.

Sometimes I'll just shoot things without VATS, and usually that's because they're trivial enemies.

There's absolutely no reward for karma so not even sure why they kept it.

Sofar my opinion of the NCR is that they are a bunch lazy morons with a bunch of even lazier and moronic beaurocrat higher ups. I'm neutral with them and will work for them, to make profit for me, but I personally have nothing against or for the Legion as of now. Might stay out of it and work both sides to get ahead. Or eventually destroy both if I can.

Level 7 now and really pressing to get my lockpicking up asap. Kind of hanging out down south for the time being, side-questing and exploring. I wanted to get my critical hit chances up so I took another perk to increase S.P.E.C.I.A.L....obvious as to what I raised.

Going to probably get the bloody mess perk next. We will see, though.

Pretty much, and you will have numerous choices, not just those two.

A tip, one of the DLC's makes it very easy for you to create journals which give you a temporary boost- +20 with a perk, I think- to any skill.  After getting that, I never leveled lockpick above 80.

Well, there are some Legion rules that make it impossible for me to support them. For example how they treat one of the genders.
I think I'd prefer to support New Vegas, but sadly the storyline on this path forces you to eliminate certain organizations... which I happen to like and support, so...

Well, perks are precious and few, I would do my best not to "waste" any. Adding points to skills, boosting the xp/level gain or even boosting the SPECIAL attributes qualifies as waste for me. Can still be necessary if you need that point for a certain other perk. But do remember about implants (and possible +2 Str from Old World Blues).

It makes perfect sense to stop with certain skills (like Speech, Barter, Survival, Explosives) at a modified 80 (skill magazines can boost that by +20 with a perk). Still I would definately max Lockpick - it sees way too much use to rely on temporary boosts.

Did you happen to make the mistake of going North right at the start like I did? Warning signs are just invitations.

No, it really doesn't.  At 80 you can already pick most locks.  Magazines let you get the other 1% of locks and terminals, and you save a whole 40 points (I'm talking Science and Lockpick now) that you could be putting into combat skills which you use far more frequently.

They aren't rules, they're suggestions.
