I sofar have done 6 or 7 side quests and I'm nowhere near the New Vegas strip. Come to think of it, I might be level 8. I forgot that they give perks as rewards for sidequests sometimes, and I like how they have challenges and perks for killing so many type of one creature....I have the bug killer perk or whatever its called.
I went north naked and with a bb gun. I ran full tilt from a giant radscorpion and eventually ran into a deathclaw. It charged me and I confidently went into V.A.T.S. to obliterate its head with said BB. Alas, the surety and swiftness of my death may have only been outdone by the violent and grotesque manner in which I died.

In OWB, you can create one of each skill BOOK.
With the Voracious Reader perk from Lonesome Road, you can copy magazines if you have a blank magazine.
That's right. But as this perk requires level 22 (and 7 Int), by the time you can get it, you should have the most important skill bases covered. Which makes it of questionable value.

When I unlock a point of interest that requires exploring...for instance, a cave or whatever...I jot it down on paper as a note for later. Anyone else do this? Or am I just a dork?
I dive in. Screw quests, I found a NEW CAVE.

Hey I'm just pointing out where they got the ability. The only thing it's really good for at high levels is the True Police Stories magazine which boosts your crit %. It's fairly nice to be able to copy those, but I still wouldn't waste a perk on it.

I'm a nerd who recently got shot in the face and become f-ugly.
But even with 1 charisma EDI is burning the wild life like a little terminator of doom

Myself, couldn't afford to put many points in Sneak till my twenties (and the Sneak Suit Mk. III from OWB).
And even with max Sneak I still get detected a lot in Dead Money (obviously even moreso if I have companions with me). So while melee has its moments, ranged is the safer bet.
Another discussion is melee vs unarmed. Still can't decide that myself. Unarmed looks kinda poor... but so does melee, come to think of it.
Well, the Gehenna looks great.. but the swings seem to lack force and substance.
Plus with unarmed you can learn a few extra tricks - trip, dirty fighting, counter and jump assault. You can Stomp on knocked down opponents. Melee seems a bit boring by comparison. And with 75 in Unarmed you can use Cross instead of regular attack... and that has a 1.75 limb damage modifier. Often the enemies can be killed by dismemberment long before exhausting their hp pool.

I tried them with my ranged crit build, and even then I was dealing ridiculous amounts of damage. It most definitely is not poor!
On the other hand, I don't see it as more powerful than energy weapons. Ranged weapons do have an edge just by well, being ranged. At least against Deathclaws and other melee enemies.

but i played him before most of the DLC and patch content, i dont know if it changed. (i don't think they nerf anything in a singleplayer game tough)

For melee there are some new goodies as well. The GRA chainsaw is great for non-crit builds. But there's also a new knife that beats Chance's knife, and there's Old Glory that does a lot of critical damage. Those are just from Lonesome Road and GRA, there's more in the other DLCs of course.

Actually in Dead Money most enemies would be instant-gibbed, if I managed to get a Sneak Critical Hit with a Bear Trap Fist (2x2,5 Limb damage with Cross!) . But sneaking upon them was quite tricky and often it was much safer to engage them from distance with the Holorifle, which did pretty good damage too. The Clean Knife Spear did underwhelming damage by comparison.

Nerf? Nah, not that I know of anyway. They just put in some more awesome items so it got better. I think the Deathclaw claw fist weapon is pretty good, for example.

Pyromaniacs got some love too!
There's Gehenna from GRA, an awesome shish-kebab and the Saturnite Fist Super Heated from Old World Blues. With the Pyromaniac perk which adds +50% to their damage, these are some of the best weapons in F:NV.
I guess it helps that I use the Fook mod, which brings various fixes to the game - for example fixes Pyromaniac to have Energy Weapons requirement, as that's where fire-based weapons are now categorized.

Im also a sucker for shish-kebab(now im hungry
I always love how we can sneak attack with a chainsaw on the other hand
@MichaelStuart.
One of my dissapointments about New Vegas, no dual wield... We are in the west, the center of dual pistols

There is a master 'Machate' between legion which is very effective. I just realized the power of explosives in my last playthrough. KABOOM the enemies!

Oh and be sure to repair ED-E, which can be used as a second pack mule.
Yeah, ED-E is awesome!
Also actively scans the surroundings and marks the enemies on your radar while they are still miles away. Makes the Perception stat kinda obsolete :-) (but you need 6 for Better Criticals).
On a less optimistic note, I just finished Dead Money yesterday and I thought I'd share my impressions. These were not very positive, I'm afraid. Haven't been this frustrated playing a game since long... actually since I can remember.
The DLC has its advantages: the atmosphere is pretty... dense, the characters very nice, combat is excellent (finally a challenge in the good sense) and the story is pretty decent. Sadly the gameplay is just... annoying. The town is actually a complex maze in disguise, some areas are densly packed with deadly traps and you're also fighting an enviromental hazard, which cuts off or limits access to certain places. Also indestructible guardians (yeah, I know, emitters... I probably even found 3 of them). So far, so good. But there is one gameplay mechanic that I've found incredibly frustrating. The radio/speaker interference causing death if you stay near the source for several seconds. Cleverly hidden radios, radios indestructible (shielded) for no apparent reason (I know, you can shut some down via computers), radios out of reach, deadly races against the ticking clock. Oh how many times I've seen the neck of my courier explode while I helplessly look around, fervently searching for that damned hidden contraption that spells doom more certain then a legion of Deathclaws. I understand the designers were aiming for a survival horror atmosphere, but that's just bad game design IMVHO. Totally changed the game into some silly platformer with constant checkpoints - reach (and find) one or you're out!
Well, two down, two more to go. Old World Blues was an absolute blast, but Dead Money was such a let down. Time to dive in to Honest Hearts!

Personally, I love it. All of the things you mention also make it more challenging and exciting. A lot of the emitters you mention just require a bit of patience and running back and forth until you find what you're looking for. But yes, a few of them are a bit frustrating. Luckily Christine can buy you some time.
Why I love it:
- dense atmosphere, as you say
- actually DEADLY traps, not your average Skyrim trap that feels like a gentle breeze by comparison
- the characters, particularly Christine
- another casino to empty!
- the holorifle, by far one of the most epic weapons in the game and, well, ever
- neat crafting station after you finish where you can make chips and turn them in to get repair kits and such
- I always feel exhausted when exiting Dead Money, but in a good way; it's like a rite of passage for my character -- if you have survived Dead Money, you're just that much more of a badass

HH is like a mini-vacation for your character. Well, except for the buffed cazadores that is. Enjoy
Oh, and by the way, every cave with a workbench has a chance of spawning skill books. I have found as many as 3 in some of them. The contents are decided when you enter a cave though, so if you want to make sure you get books, you have to save BEFORE you enter.

I'll skip reloading for books though. At level 45 with 10 Int I'm not exactly starved for skill points

I always have exploding heads but this is part of the challenge. I normally don't like horror survival games, but this has become a DLC I really look forward to. The atmosphere, storytelling and characters are amazing for a DLC. I love the storytelling through gameplay aspect of the final dungeon. I could gush about that.Haplose wrote...

Honest Hearts is probably my favorite though. That's not a typical opinion, however. Some people found it underwhelming. It's about exploration so don't expect the same combat intensiveness of either Dead Money or OWB. I just love the story, when combined with the Survivalist letters.
FNV DLC sets the standard for all DLC and leaves most of them in the dust.
