Heh, I remember my first run on hardcore/very hard. It's weird to say that I loved managing ammo and food on my character inventory? I also liked that open combat is not that much of an viable option. You really need to think of how to approach enemies. And it also makes survival an essential skill.

Last week, I stupidly didn't have any saves other than first run autosave and well, my next autosave was me walking into an exploding room.  Thus, I had to reload from scratch.  In that brief time playing, however, I note how ineffective guns are in this game (versus Fallout 3) and have made my new character to be a melee-machine.  To me, it seemed much more effective.  I really enjoyed the VATS of Fallout 3 (e.g. head sniping with hunting rifle) but it seems very nerfed in this game. Before my save issue, I had just gotten a fiend's driver and was really working people over with it.

Oops, I just wiped out the NCR at the HELIOS plant on accident. Was going to reload a save but I'm already Vilified with them.

That might be because you are using the wrong ammo type. there are many enemies in the game that use armor, and you need to use armor piercing ammo on them. You will notice that if an shield appear when you shoot an enemy, is because there is armor protecting them from full damage, but if you use AP, their shield will appear as an broken icon, meaning your ammo is damaging them directly. There are aways other factors. Do you keep your weapons repaired? Is your guns skill high enough? And so on and on....

I didn't know about the different ammo types.  Thanks.  I always keep weapons repaired and tried (until I had to restart) to focus on guns when adding points.  Guns obviously kills stuff, but I just feel like they aren't as lethal as they were in FO3, certainly not in VATS & sniping. It seems that I would put 20 rounds into a modest enemy just to make it go down.

Well, I myself, try to save my points for energy weapons, they are just more powerful. I just keep one shoting enemies later on with my trusty gauss rifle. Going for sneak criticals are aways an good option. Go for melee to kill animals in order to conserve ammo. Apart from the convicts in the beggining of the game there are not many powerful enemies. Just try to get ED-E repaired as quickly as possible. It's an poweful companion, and it's good to keep enemies distracted while you melee them. If I were you, I would spec for unarmed weapons. The balistic fist is devastating.

I did that at an NCR Camp on the east part of the map and failed four quests. Reluctantly reloaded my file :/

I've never done an energy weapons playthrough, but I always travel with Veronica and give her a Gauss Rifle. She goes through ammo like crazy. Those rounds won't last long I'd bet.

A nice sniping weapon for sure. If you DIDN'T pick the Wild Wasteland perk, there's also the YCS-186 variant in the northernmost part of the map.

But I found that, except for the most heavily armored enemies (Deathclaws come to mind... a certain overgrown Bloatfly... maybe also Roboscorpions if you manage to engage them from afar... but they usually ambush you), I found the modified regular Laser Rifle to be a superior sniping weapon. Fires rapidly, has 24 cells per clip and uses just one cell per shot... Can easily adjust the aim if you miss the first shot. Meanwhile with the Gauss guns it's just one shot and you have to reload.

The damage on the Laser Rifle is better then it looks on paper also, particularly if both beams sneak attack crit and you have some nice perks like Laser Commander and Better Criticals.

So even though I have many advanced weapons, like the YCS-186, Plasma Caster with High Speed Electrode, Pew-Pew, modified LAER, the Holorifle, I still find myself using the old good Laser Rifle a lot for long distance engagements. Obviously the immortal Plasma Caster is my weapon of choice for medium distance :D ...and when they get nice and personal, it's time for barbecue with Scorched Saturnite Fist or Gehenna (need to watch out for Meltdown effects from plasmas).

Yeah the Gauss is treating me well. Even with so much ammo I will save it for higher level enemies...plus I want to keep it in peak condition to maximize damage output. Did some repair and added a lot more statistical damage. I am role-playing as a merc/prospector with perfect lockpicking skills to reach hidden caches. On top of that, I am a combat specialist...in an old-school duel with a revolver, or in aggressive assault raids of caves, nests and buildings with shotguns, submachine automatics, laser and plasma. I've also gotten better at my health, fixing my stuff and I get top dollar for my loot hauls. Me and Cass run a nice Caravan...and we live by our own rules. Main goal is to get rich and powerful as hell, see the wastelands, help anyone decent and not snobby, and become a legend. Of the Mojave.

Lol. It's been a fun build. I am doing very good in this game, and having a blast. I kinda wish I would have gone for a simpler build, but now I know exactly what build I want for Fallout 4. I have a massive and extensive collection of loot as well. Before too long I'm going to bring myself to taking out the quarry. Gonna go in heavy with my fatman and telsa prototype on standby, along with the highest stat lasers I have.

Hardcore mode definitely makes this game a real challenge at times (but in a good way). I can still remember that vault with all the attacking plants - I was limping and battling a concussion that made my vision blur out regularly through parts of that one just because I had run out of doctor's bags. And there was another vault that was heavily irradiated, and where I had to go back to an old save because, with my most recent one, it wasn't physically possible to get to the exit before I hit 1,000 RADs.
