How to use recruits at final battle?

I discovered I could get a few of one type to appear when I am fighting the dragon's Generals. Is there any way to get them all to appear at the end battle? It seems to me that only the dwarves I had used for the battle before the finale showed up at the end. They were useful as the mages and archers would have been hamburger for the Darkspawn, but obviously all of them would be better/

Is there any way to control them byond clicking on their group icon to activate?

No, you can't control them, and as Fragtallity says, you can only call one group at a time.

To clarify: Choose a group. When they are ALL dead, you can summon another group.

My first run, I called the 50 Elven archers. By archdemon down, I had 2 left. (The darkspawn were swarming them.)

Second run, I used 50 Redcliffe and had about 5 left at the end.

Third run, 50 Dwarves; 18 left at the end.

I'm thinking this next time I'll use the 12 Mages. I didn't before because I thought they would get snuffed far too fast. Now I'm thinking that may be the best idea: Burn them early to wear down the archdemon, and then use the 50 Dwarves to keep the darkspawn off my back.

Interesting idea. Maybe even use the archers up on the Generals. My thought is the melee types from Redcliff and Orzammar are the best because the party can kill the Dragon if not interfered with too much by Darkspawn. The last thing you need is to get accidentally snuffed by area affect spells from the clueless AI so the Mages have a risk factor the others don't.  Less us know how your Mages do.

Actually, my first offensive line is the Rogue with umpteen hundred bombs. Get him/her near the archdemon and start lobbing every round. Soulrot, Acid, Freeze, Shock, Fire. By the time the fifth one flies, the cooldown on the first is finished, so it's a continuous bombardment. Only thing to watch out for is to make sure it's a Warden finishes it off. {However, I _think_ it's actually impossible for a non-Warden to kill it. SUPER SPOILER if you've never been in that situation PM me if you want details.]

I've seen mages in the demon fight, didn't see any problems with aoe. However, it could be the party setup.

It was lei-archer, wynne-healer, warden-damage caster and only melee, alistair.

Not true.  In my last run Leli rode its head to the ground and performed the coup de grace animation.  Just afterwards, however, my PC rushed in and whacked it.  It was a bit jarring because I knew it was already dead, but necessary, I guess, for storyline purposes...

oooOOOooo  END SPOILER

My experience with using mages against the archdemon was that they got slaughtered.  Their spells aren't that good.   Archers actually seem to go ok if you can keep the darkspawn occupied.

I started with the Dwarves ... but I only had about 15 left. That was good for the original phase of the fight since they could all run and grab aggro - it kept the darkspawn of my mage's! Then, I grabbed the Archers and that was good for the final phases where they could all hang back and range attack the archdemon

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one.

I had stopped reading the gameplay tips that explained how to summon them about 12 levels before and I had a wonderful army of mages, golems, dwarves, men  and elves that just watched during some pretty massive combat.

Completely off-topic, but I have a question for Alodar: Have you by any chance read the book 'Master of the Five Magics'?

I don't use hardly anyone for my final battle, Its usually just my toon and Alister going to beat the Archdemon down when I am bored and tired of soloing him.

When I killed my first general I didn't realize it either.  Wondering why Bioware made these areas so hard....

I picked up the book a while back at random, and I'm in the middle of re-reading it. I've just started the Sorcery Arc. Still an amazing book.

It was a cool final battle. It took me twenty minutes, used just about every potion in my posession and when it came to the final couple of minutes my party was all down and it was just me against the archdemon. It was very satisfying.

When I fought the arch-demon, I used mages, and humans after that. The humans were a great help keeping the darkspawn away from my characters while they whack the arch-demon.

Hmm. There's an interesting finale I'll probably never see:

Of the party, only the Hero remains up and active; no ability to revive any of the others. Hero kills archdemon, and as Riordan points out, the Hero, as a Warden striking the final blow, dies.

The entire party is _dead_. Who is around for the Victory celebration? Does the game just go straight to the Epilogue summaries of "This is what became of so-and-so"? Or do you get a Victory Celebration/Memorial Service?

We can use them for the Generals too!! I thought everyone was just talking about the Archdemon. At least I unlocked the achievement for not losing any.

The Generals and the Archdemon were tough but beatable without their help.

In the REALLY REALLY MEAN run through, you should send each wave in to fight---alone.

Make sure they all spend their lives before you have to.
