The chant obviously comes from catholicism and christianity.  I thought the following quote was brilliant. It's refreshing to find philosophy in a game. At this point I do not consider "Dragon age" a game anymore, but an experience.

"Faith is of the heart, not the head. When the heart is ungoverned by reason, charlatans have powerful tools to deceive."

Isn't that the truth? ..... Good job Bioware!

Jowan: Ambiguous rubbish. It could mean anything. I can do it too: The sun grows dark, but lo! Here comes the dawn!

It makes sense an atheist would turn to the dark arts.

When is it ever implied that Jowan is an atheist?

I think the only confirmed atheist in the game is Morrigan. Dog doesn't count and neither does Shale because ....it has amnesia.

Many fantasy games, ESPECIALLY Dragon Age are really a mirror into our own society when it comes down to it

Jowan way plenty holy where it counted. I mean, he was putting his sacramental offering into female priestess no less.

How exactly does that make sense?

I'm an atheist and last I checked I wasnt involved with the dark arts in any way.

I believe Shale shows some interest in the Way of the Qun during some chats with Sten.

Catholicism? I'd disagree. The religion is monotheistic, and thus seems to share a lot with Christianity...but I think it does a good job of distancing itself from any modern religions. Hell, several aspects of it seem to coincide with Islam, but I'm talking about how the Chant was derived from it.

...now, on to your actual point: Dragon Age's writers were great at creating believable, memorable characters. Statements like that are a great example of this.

Heh, one of my favorites was "I suggest examining your food more closely."/"That's good advice for anyone." And I laughed out loud at the "What did you do with her legs?" exchange.

The writing is superb throughout.

Faith = Nothing
That's not philosophy, that's theological nonsense... faith from heart? Then what? Then moves the actions of people stronger than something that has been planned. Then, it's a bad thing because it's not a harmless emotion or sense, but it arises from weakness.

There's no god.

P.S.: Yes. I think Morrigan has way better quotes than this one.
And yes, I think that Bioware has done a really good job with this, I can perceive some philosophical influences and stuff.

When the world is void of nugs...there...will...be...

ENCHANTMENT!

...And a great reckoning, yadayada, waffles, peanut sauce, Michael Jackson jokes...

Did I mention sex? Oh yeah. Lots of sex.

Everywhere.

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, in a galaxy closer than you think, but not that close, 'cause it has to be far, far away.

AND THE MUFFINS WILL RULE THE WORLD!

Sheryl Chee is a writer at BioWare who participated in the making of Dragon Age: Origins. Sheryl has a philosophy degree, which she says trained her for a career of making things up. She is responsible for writing Dog, Leliana, Wynne and Cullen.
She lists her hobbies as liking cheese and yarn.

I knew it.

http://dragonage.wik...iki/Sheryl_Chee

Morrigan: "The fact of their existence does not presuppose an intelligent design by some absentee father-figure."

Morrigan: "Attempting to impose order over chaos is futile. Nature is, by it's very nature, chaotic."

Leliana: "Let me ask you this, then, Morrigan. What if there really was a Maker?"
Morrigan: "Then I would wonder why He has abandoned His creation. It seems terribly irresponsible of Him."

Not quite.. think of it this way

Faith = Heart
Heart  - Reason = Easily Controlled

So basically, don't place your faith before your ability to see reason. Others may use it to exploit you.

I'm not sure why a religion would preach that; it seems kind of self-defeating, but there you have it.
