Hello,
Having bought the Trilogy pack, I'm a ways through ME1 (about to head into Virmire) and so far I'm not getting the sort of companion experience I'm used to in other Bioware games (Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, Dragon Age, SWTOR et al.) Each of the companion characters seems to have very little to say, one token conversation after each planet and not much input during missions. As a result, I've sunk some time into ME1 and I don't feel like I "know" who the heck Kaidan is, or Wrex, or Tali. Not like I built very strong mental images of Minsc, Viconia, Deekin, Silk Fox, Oghren, Alistair, Isabela, Vette... I don't feel as connected to my Mass Effect squad as I have felt to my other Bioware companions. I feel they're just combat robots following me on autopilot.
Does it get any better in ME2 or ME3?

Yes and no. It both gets better and worse. In ME2 you will find that the characters have less to say after missions and they don't really interact much with eachother. Even less than in ME1. But on the other side almost every character now has an introduction mission and one 'get-to-know them mission' (Loyalty quests). So this might help you better relate to the characters than you did in ME1. There are only three squadmates whom don't have introduction quests, and all of them has an loyalty quest.
In the introduction quest you are introduced to the characters; Their personality traits and so one, while in the 'get-to-know-them' quest you will dig a little bit deeper into their personal life. Many people say they find the characters of ME1 more difficult to relate to than in the other two games. I don't agree, but you may find you belong to this group.
In ME3 squadmates have something to say after almost every mission, and characters talks alot during missions, both with you and with others. And your crewmembers even walk around the Normandy like they were alive! No longer does your crewmembers simply stand on their same post all the time.
But even in this game not everything is for the better. You see, even though characters now has something to say almost every time you borad the normandy after a mission, you can't talk to them. Instead you listen, and in most of this conversation your Shepard has no ability to respond, except for autodialogue. As I said there are some few conversations through the game where the dialogue wheel is present, but it is not overly many.
Despite all this though, both of the other 2 games are worth a try. Many before you has found they have more love for it's sequels than ME1 itself, so therefore I advise you to continue and see if you like ME2 or not at least.
