I actually owe my existence to my mother, thank you.
And the Big Bang, which the Catalyst also owes its existence to.
All these impersonal cosmic accidents in an uncaring universe...

Why are there people here that always enjoy implying that I'm stupid?
The statement is intended to convey the purpose of the cycle. It ensures that new life develops and has a chance at existence.

We owe our existence to the Chixculub asteroid for wiping out every warm blooded animal larger than a housecat and giving mammals a chance 65 million years ago. It's nothing personal, that's just what big rocks do when they hit bigger rocks. Still, I'd say next time it's poised to happen we should blow the thing out of the sky.
Yes, we owe our existence to cosmic accidents. The Catalyst is one of those accidents, in the context of the ME universe. I think this is what BioWare was trying to convey.

The cycle ensured that humans, asari, hanar, etc. were not forever subjugated by the Protheans.
That's one gigantic assumption right there. Who says the Prothean empire would've lasted that long ? Empires rise and fall regardless of Starjar and his "solution". I don't buy it.
It was just one example. Who knows, the Protheans may have never existed if some other species millions of years older had taken the place of the Leviathans.
Regardless of species or timeframe you still make the assumption that any of those empires would actually last long enough to dominate the species that you claim the catalyst allowed to flourish.
there is no way to disprove the theory with whats known. So the OP's point has merit, well as much merit as the big bang theory, or E=mc squared is the rule of the cosmos.

That's because I actually do exist.Fnork wrote...
There is no way to disprove the existence of god either. Or Cthulu for that matter.

When you say things like "you owe your existence to the omnicidal rogue AI", you should probably expect people to imply there's some sort of mental defect at play. Personally, I just think you're trolling.

Yes! But people seem to hate the Catalyst more than the Leviathans, so I figured it would be more controversial if I emphasized the Catalyst, and I felt like poking at the beast known as BSN.

This is true actually. Forget the Protheans, since the days the Leviathans ruled, how many millions of space-faring races could have simply colonized Earth, stopping humanity from developing at all?
This question is often asked in the real world but we can reach no answer. How is it possible we developed at all? Earth is a relatively young planet, the odds were so much against us.
In Mass Effect's universe, we know. Because of the Reapers.

My point is that the idea of the Catalyst is more impressive than people care to admit. His role as overseer of a cycle that maintains life is rather interesting. But many people here think it's stupid.

It is interesting but your thread title implies that the Catalyst deserves praise for its actions.

Yes, the Catalyst's cycle allowed us to develop. It "created" us.
Created vs. Creator theme!

Hm. I can see how that could be interpreted. I didn't really mean in that way. It was more in the spirit of "We owe our existence to the stars." Something like that. The forces of nature.

The only reason humanity exists at all is because of the Catalyst. Should we be thankfull for that, at least?
