So, we all remember the intro on Eden Prime, right? At the end, Kaiden moves towards the beacon, and then Shepard jumps at him, pushing him aside and allowing him/her to take the blow. This is never really explained (to my recollection) and instead everyone is instantly concerned with how the beacon affected Shepard. Is the result of some sort of cut content, i wonder, maybe early/late in production, where Eden Prime was much more in-depth than a training run, and possibly suggests that Shepard knew/knows Kaiden from previous occasions and maybe was romantically or simply platonically (dunno if thats a word) involved with him? It feels out of place for any Shepard except maybe War Hero to jump in and possibly sacrifice their life for someone they barely know.

Frankly, the whole of Eden Prime seems like a hurried mess, but who am i to nit pick at my favorite series ever? :P Thoughts on this or anything else that seems strange/out of place on the starting level?

Impression I got was that Shepard isn't intending to take anything for anyone but just to pull Kaiden out of there. Never had any feeling that it's anything more than someone trying to save a colleague/subordinate from danger. If so taking Kaiden's place was an unintended consequence for the character, though of course very much intended from the writers POV as it's a set up for one of the romance options:
Oooh, Femshep saved me so:wub:

And of course if Shepard is male it's not even Kaiden who gets dragged toward the beacon at all - it's Ashley Williams. There's certainly no history between Blokeshep and Ash as they only met a short while earlier.

Really? Never played a m-shep in ME1, so i never knew that. It would seem to be a romance setup then :P

I always play the maleShep who romances Kaidan in ME3. I wish it was him my Shep saves near the beacon. But yeah it's to set up a romance.

You might be able to do that with the PC console. Fairly sure I saw somewhere that there's a command for NPCs to act as if Shepard is the opposite gender, which ought to mean changing that scene as well eventually having what the game thinks is a hetero romance but what will appear on screen as a gay romance. What effect that might have on imports I don't know but I doubt if it'll work quite right in ME2 - at the least I'd expect the conversation on Horizon and subsequent email to be wrong for a romanced character, and at worst your gay male Shepard might wake up one morning as a straight Femshep instead. I'm half tempted to try it just to see what happens.

Now that is interesting. I have the PS3 version though, it would have been great if bioware made some changes to make Kaidan a LI in ME1.

Ah, then that doesn't help you much. Guess you could headcanon it that one or both of them are in the closet until ME3 or something.
