Perhaps they feel the same about you speaking English? Since this game is sold worldwide, I think your desire for one and only one language to be used is highly unrealistic and also somewhat insulting.

This.

OP: if you don`t like it, don´t play. La gente como vos apestan or peolple like you s***ks

i don't mind as long as the guy isn't the only one who can understand his language in the room
and also as long as he doesn't call out my name and try to say something to me, it is really really frustrating to know someone's talking to you and you can't understand a word he's saying

You know, you're right! In fact why can't the while world just speak English all the time? Why do they need to have they're own stupid languages that we can't understand? Clearly there's no point. Obviously English is the master language, anyone can see that.

/sarcasm

People really do like to blow things out of proportion.

No one is saying that everyone should speak English on public games. English is just the most understood language. No bias towards other languages, just a fact.

OP, I don't think there's a "common agreement", but you should also consider that maybe they don't speak English. And if there are already 2 people speaking  certain language, then you automatically become a minority. Also, they are probably friends and generally, even in English, they will talk to each other regardless of whether you can understand them or not.

Like I said, I personally don't mind that they speak a different language, as long as they don't get mad at me for not understanding them. It's happened once or twice that somone was trying to tell me something, I said I'm sorry I don't understand, repetitions of the same thing, then a much angrier set of phrases which were probably cursing.

edit: formatting.

....Yeah I didn't say learn every European language.

If there are 3 Norwegians all speaking in Norwegian and you have an English guy drop in, are you saying the 3 Norwegians should all speak English out of courtesy, or they should go into private chat?

I find that ridiculous.

My sister and I do this all the time. It is far more likely that the people we meet are able to understand English compared to being able to understand Norwegian, so as soon as someone else joins out lobby we automatically switch to English.

We always figured it was the courteous thing to do. As long as we're able to, why not make an attempt to include others in our chat?

That said, I have had more than one enjoyable game where I couldn't understand a thing the rest of the team said. As long as they don't get on my back for not knowing what they're saying I won't get on their back for not talking a language I understand. If they manage the odd "Ferus, look out" I am more than happy.

Considering you connect to people anywhere in the world, expecting them not to talk is pretty dickish.

We're not playing on servers designated as English servers, so speak whatever you'd like. Make up your own language on the spot for all I care.

Just understand that I don't understand a word you're saying if you're trying to give tactical advice.

I'm actually frequently surprised by how many non English speaking players I run into who are more than happy to speak english if they notice there's more than one or two of us in the game. I know speaking your non-native language can be a real chore. I'd reciprocate but I've got dumb american's disease in that they don't start teaching us foreign languages here until it's almost impossible for us to learn them without lots of supplemental help. I'm fairly sure I still remember some french from high school and I know a wee bit of spanish because I work at a mini-mart in a latino neighborhood.

If everyone in the lobby understands one common language (doesn't have to be English), then yeah it would be rude for two or three of them to have a conversation no one else understands. But not any more rude than two people having non-game-related conversation that doesn't include you in a language you do understand. Maybe they don't know English? Anyway, nothing to get worked up about, I usually mute the lobby whether they're speaking my language or not.

That's out of choice which is fine. The OP is suggesting an obligation to do so.

Next you'll be suggesting that an inferior version of "The Killing" should be remade in US English because some people are too stupid to read subtitles...

oh hang on....

Yes, actually, I do. If I wanted to speak Norwegian I should go with a private team. But again, I bring that attitude from work, where a meeting with four Norwegians and one guy from Netherlands/England/Aussie would be enough for all to speak English. I'm just used to it. Because if you don't do it, the one (or two) team member not from that country would be left out. I don't think that 's good team spirit.

I am suprised at the hostility I'm getting here for asking one question. Being called dickish and that I suck - is that how you generally treat people asking something on this forum?

I've played several pug's with non-english speakers... and if they're good, in general it doesn't matter. Which isn't to say that communication isn't helpful, but that a lot of coordination can happen simply by being semi-predictable in your approach to enemies... and by their being semi-predictable. People who play the game well tend to have similar tendencies... and those who can execute those tendencies best are the ones that leave me at second or third on the score board ha ha.

Where possible it's nice if people endeavour to use a common language. I know when my foreign language friends meet each-other they use English as a common language... but people have the right ot use whatever language they are comfortable with.

I just have to say that there is a huge difference between a video game and a meeting. People can play this game without saying 1 word to each other even if they are all speakers of the same language. In a meeting, all people have to understand each other.

I retract one of my previous statements. And I say no, no one should have to if they didn't want to. If they do, that's very nice. If they don't, I wouldn't call it discourteous.

It's always cool to hear German, especially the cursing.  It can sound angrier than any other language I think.

Let's flip this up.

If 3 English speakers are all speaking English and one Norwegian joins, should the English speaks now all go into a private chat or speak Nowegian?

i'd find it irritating but i certainly would not expect them to switch to English merely for my benefit. I only got a mic a few weeks ago anyway so i'v spent most of my MP time not talking to other players, and even now if I do talk to PUGs, the ones with mics dont reply and the ones without tend to ignore my suggestions to come do the escort drone, or run away from that possessed abomination who is about to detonate

well you shouldn't be surprised
if people have a diffferent opinion than yours then you're the one wrong and you're stupid for thinking like that
it's even more true on internet than IRL

+ your OP can be seen as insulting, your thought isn't detailed enough there, remember that many replies didn't even read the whole thread

while i get your point, and you do make a good point, i personally don't mind if i'm with 3 russians speaking russian
most of the time they even are cool enough to make the effort of talking in english when talking to me
