I think there's been a few misunderstandings in this thread. It's actually a legitimate question.

Also, original Poster is Norwegian, something it's pretty clear several posters didn't actually catch onto.

The question is really where the practical bumps up against that which is culturally sensitive. Most of the posters here seem to agree that if there is a common language, it makes sense to speak that language. Some people are shy speaking in a second language, and that's ok.

I've always been aware of how lucky I am that Engish is my first language. It allows me to communicate with more people on the planet than any other language. That's the best thing about it, which is a question of practicality, not value (i.e. it doesn't make "English better").

But any way you look at it, you'll sometimes be the one who doesn't understand tha language. Even age can account for that. I don't use my microphone most of the time because Xbox Live is mostly composed of kids. That's also just a question of practicality - I'm the one in the minority, but I don't mind if a bunch of kids want to talk about the Kardashians.

Okay, I'm lying, I would never listen to a bunch of kids talk about the Kardashians! :)

Thank you! Good to see a sensible reply (there have been a couple) amongst all the teenage ******. :)

I don't mind people speaking their language I just wish they'd turn their damn microphones down. I have a hard enough time hearing as it is due to years of gaming at max volume. LOL.

Though I do believe either we need to be given the right to mute peoples' mics locally or at the very least make it so we can choose which country we connect to. I don't mind people speaking their language but on the same token I don't want to have to listen to someone speak a language that is alien to me and have no way to mute them.

I think you're just expecting too much from a gaming community is all. You're expectations come from a work related experience, where communication is key, people are hired and trained for circumstances in which they need to speak a second or even third language.

This is just a video game, not everyone playing is going to know or want to switch to English just because one or two people in the lobby are English speakers. It may hinder communications, but communication isn't needed to play this game, at least not to the degree that communication is needed in the workplace.

To be clear, English is not the most widely spoken language on the planet =P

That said, the reason the OP is getting as much hate as they are is that they're implying that everyone should default to English because it's apparently above the rules.

I specifically asked about Chinese to see what the OP would say about a lobby where not everybody speaks the same language and the lanaguage that 3/4 of the players speak is actually more common than English.

But they chose to ignore me on it =P

Good point. I just figured most European countries learned English from prime school years, just as we do in Scandinavia. :)

People talk in multiplayer?! O.o Seriously, 99% of all matches I'm in on PC are absolutely silent, even on Gold.

But on the OP's topic, it doesn't bother me what language they're speaking in, as long as the team is decent, support each other and generally know what they're doing.

OR

2. Believing that the most spoken language in the world is English? It would be much easier to teach 6 billion people Mandarin than to teach 6.5 billion English.

Oops. Got me. Original sentiment still valid.

Do you feel comfortable with questions being answered that way?

Meh, it is the Internet. It could be worse.

Erm, no? Please stop putting words into my mouth. It's because it's the most common language spoken. Not spoken by most as that would be Chinese (mandarin, perhaps), but still most common outside of China.

There is actually a difference between the most spoken and the most widely spoken language. While mandarin does have more speakers, they are much more focused in a single area than english. I personally have found many people who speak english in my PUGs but not one who speaks mandarin. That seems to imply that despite more people speaking mandarin, the people who play this game tend to come from places where english is commonly spoken.

I was off by about 10% total speakers, but number of countries speaks for itself.

What I do or don't think you are implying is how I recieved what you wrote. Given the responses you have gotten in this thread it would appear that many agree with that.

It is not putting words in your mouth it is saying this is how you're coming off like. In communication your intention does not matter as much as your delivery and your delivery made it seem like everyone should be defaulting to English because it is English.

Chinese(really Mandarin but I'm just calling it Chinese) is the most common language in the world given current estimates. Yes outside of China might have more English speakers, but why are you not counting China?

I bet I could not count the USA and that would considerably drop the number of English speakers as well.

I had my reasons for asking about Chinese specifically, partially due to it being more common than English, though you still did not answer the question =P

Just want to mention.. It's not about most "spoken", it's most understood, and I believe English is in fact the most understood language. Yes Mandarin would be the most spoken because of pure numbers, but how many people from other parts of the world would actually understand Chinese?

OP is right in that English is the widely recognized international language of the western world. It use to be French back in the day.

More actual people in the world speak mandarin, but the vast majority of them are in one country, which happens to be massively overpopulated and speaks about 5 languages to begin with.

A single international language is important if different cultures want to interact effectively while maintaining their own languages. This is something the human race learned a loooooong time ago.

Geez. Yes, if 3/4 are Chinese, then speak mandarin (unless all four understand English). I don't mind. That is not my issure or point.

Well now you have to clarify exactly what "understanding" the language is considered.

One might be able to argue that understanding it means you can also speak it at a basic level enough to carry a conversation.

I remember this one time I posted in a similar thread on Languages and Regions, and I thought this game at least hooks people up to the closest and and best connection. But nooo, I was wrong in my assumption, and I was apparently a stupid arrogant ****** for not knowing it could just as easily put a Japanese person in a Chilean lobby as it would put 'em a lobby hosted in their own damn country.

Yes, I understand that it doesn't take much to be called a stupid arrogant ****** here. Too bad that such a great game has so many rotten apples in the community.

Your point is definitely true if we're talking about communication, which we are.

But I don't really want my point to be misinterpreted. I meant that the must commonly spoken language in the room was the natural choice. Not necessarily the whole world (though technically speaking that is what I said, it was an error).

Someone pointed out that in practical terms, English is the hardest language to learn, which is absolutely true. I often think about how a language so complicated it has more exceptions than rules manages to spread so far.

I think there's a strange yin/yang happening there. English has (typically) been the conquering language. Even in modern economic terms that holds true. But it has also ended up with bits of every language it bumps up against in it. It's such a weird hodgepodge. Maybe that bizarre duality has something to do with it.

I'm drifting a little off topic.
