I remember this one time I posted in a similar thread on Languages and Regions, and I thought this game at least hooks people up to the closest and and best connection. But nooo, I was wrong in my assumption, and I was apparently a stupid arrogant ****** for not knowing it could just as easily put a Japanese person in a Chilean lobby as it would put 'em a lobby hosted in their own damn country.

Yes, I understand that it doesn't take much to be called a stupid arrogant ****** here. Too bad that such a great game has so many rotten apples in the community.

don't worry , BSN is only so much of the ME3 playerbase

Geez. Yes, if 3/4 are Chinese, then speak mandarin (unless all four understand English). I don't mind. That is not my issure or point.

And your original OP says nothing about that. It merely says that it's annoying to hear enthusiastic and constant debates in languages you don't know that you can't participate in or understand what is being said.

You even say "I thought it was a common agreement that everyone would speak English".

Do you really find it surprising that even though you mentioned that you aren't a native English speaker that people jumped on you for saying things like that?

It comes off as telling people they should always speak English in lobbies simply because it is English.

Just want to mention.. It's not about most "spoken", it's most understood, and I believe English is in fact the most understood language.

Well now you have to clarify exactly what "understanding" the language is considered.

One might be able to argue that understanding it means you can also speak it at a basic level enough to carry a conversation.

I just meant it as compared to Chinese, which is the most spoken language, more people would have a better chance of (on any level) understanding Enlgish, as it is used and taught in more countries, as opposed to Mandarin.

The human ego is an amazing thing. You can have all of these people telling you that you are wrong, and giving logical explanations as to why you're wrong, but no.... it's everyone else that's wrong. Logic and reason be damned.

But in all seriousness, that OP was actually offensive to me, and I'm an American, an America whose first language is, well, obviously English. I'm not sure what the OP was thinking when they made this thread... Seriously? You do realize there's an entire planet out there with thousands of languages, expecting everyone who will ever pick up this game to speak English is, well, highly absurd to say the least... Even on a north American server, I get everything from Spanish to French. I even had a Japanese speaker once.

Yes, I find that surprising. Because I thought it was common knowledge that English is the common language shared by most people. (Mentioning Chinese in a situation like this is just quarelling for the sake of quarreling, as it's more common just because there are more Chinese people. English is more widely-spread).

I can see, however, that the sentence you quoted could have been misinterpreted by people being sensitive to such topics. What I meant was that English is what most people resort to if they meet someone who speaks a language they don't understand. So therefore I thought it was already an unspoken routine that you spoke English in a public lobby.

No, I didn't realise that. Being from Norway, I thought English was the only language in existence.

Well even that depends on how you look at it. On a person by person basis you'd have a better chance of running into somebody who spoke Mandarin than English by randomly selecting 1 person in the world, but on a country by country basis you'd probably have a better chance of picking one that speaks English.

Though that's getting pretty off-topic with what the OP was originally talking about at this point.

And yet you assume that he is wrong when there are people who actually *gasp* agree with him.  While it is not required to speak english, because it is the most common that is used in the game - note, not in the world - and because it generally goes faster and easier when people are coordinating their efforts, It is generally a good idea, not to mention being polite, to swap to the language that everyone is most likely to understand.  and unless I have had a freakishly weird sample when playing, that language is english.

We should all just adopt Huttese as the official language of the world, imo.

I understand what you mean OP, even though you worded it in a way that was quite easy to offend. But I think I get what you mean.

E.g. In my university, we had people from quite a lot of countries, everyone with their language and naturally all speaking English. So if I was at a table with people from my own country, we spoke our language. However, if someone from another country joined us (even if he was a stranger), we started speaking in English to include them in the convos so that they did not feel alone. And for almost all people in uni, that was just common courtesy.

I think that you are trying to say the same concept applies here, though of course there is no guarrantee everyone speaks English. Plus, don't forget - this is the Internet, people will get offended at the smallest things. Maybe you shouldn't have used the word annoying - more like... left out? Because I do feel left out when people chatter happily in Italian for example, drop my nickname at times and I don't understand a freaking thing.

Supposedly, educated people, upon encountering a word they've never seen before, will typically attempt to use the spanish pronunciation.  If I ever meet one, I'll ask them whether this is true.

Wow.

If you want to be able to participate in conversations other than English, then learn the language.

How arrogant.

What? Are you serious? I am supposed to learn every European language out there in case I come into a PUG that speaks German/Italian/Polish/Finnish? That's insane. I'm Norwegian, and I woud view it as common courtesy to speak English when you have people in your team that you don't know where are from. But maybe I have that view because I work with colleagues from England, Scottland, Australia, New Zealand and other countries, and am used to English being a working language.

....Yeah I didn't say learn every European language.

If there are 3 Norwegians all speaking in Norwegian and you have an English guy drop in, are you saying the 3 Norwegians should all speak English out of courtesy, or they should go into private chat?

I find that ridiculous.

I am Norwegian, and yes, I would change to English if that had been the situation. In an international game like this, with so many different people, its only logical to speak the "langua franca", which is english.

I don't care what language they speak as long as they don't sound like they're eating their microphone/scream or have an otherwise very bad mic.

I simply leave the lobby then and search elsewhere. No harm done to anyone.

English is the international language for business not computer games.
Engels is die internasionale taal vir besigheid nie rekenaar speletjies nie.

A lot of the player base are younger people who may not have learned English yet.
On the other hand some people just refuse to use English. (French people do this a lot so I just speak in Afrikaans till they use English lol)

Yes, of course, but you also understand what I'm saying. Mandarin has the most speakers, English is the most widely-spoken.

Internationally speaking, you would much sooner find a Chinese person who can understand (on any level) English than a non-Chinese person who can understand Chinese.

WIthin the context of the game, which is an international game, English would be the language most likely understood by majority of the players.

Thanks, it's good to see other people who understand where I am coming from. And I never meant it to be offensive, i just figured it was already an established thing. :)
