This is a good example of why a common tongue is so important to a game played with people from other countries. If a french, german, mexican, and indian all end up in the same lobby, there is a good chance that many or all of them know some english, and can therefore communicate.
Expecting everyone to learn everone elses languages is silly. There are just too many. If we're all gonna keep moving toward this unified world, we all ne to be able to talk a common tongue. The fact that we are all debating this in english is a testament to this concept.

You know, you're right! In fact why can't the while world just speak English all the time? Why do they need to have they're own stupid languages that we can't understand? Clearly there's no point. Obviously English is the master language, anyone can see that.

You're right. Maybe I should create a topic about how you should learn to speak mackfactor in the forums.

I'm wondering... why is it common and unquestioned that English is the written language on this forum, while that seems to be an offensive thought in the game itself?
Because these are the English forums.
This for example, would be the French forums: http://social.biowar...egory/348/index
They appear to have discussions about what I can only assume are terrorist Drell.

People really do like to blow things out of proportion.
No one is saying that everyone should speak English on public games. English is just the most understood language. No bias towards other languages, just a fact.
OP, I don't think there's a "common agreement", but you should also consider that maybe they don't speak English. And if there are already 2 people speaking certain language, then you automatically become a minority. Also, they are probably friends and generally, even in English, they will talk to each other regardless of whether you can understand them or not.
Like I said, I personally don't mind that they speak a different language, as long as they don't get mad at me for not understanding them. It's happened once or twice that somone was trying to tell me something, I said I'm sorry I don't understand, repetitions of the same thing, then a much angrier set of phrases which were probably cursing.
edit: formatting.
It was mocking via hyperbole.
And English is NOT the most widely spoken language, so that's not, as you put it, a "fact."

Actually I do believe it is. Chinese has the most speakers, but English is the most widely spoken.mackfactor wrote...

...nobody has the home language advantage, no mic needed, potentially very secksy...
...and those poses should blend existing Vorcha choreography freeze-frames mixed with:
a. "I've got the pizza!"

b. "C'mon, stick with the Escort drone!"

c. Ummm, "Hooray!?" or "Here, now you can aim your rocket!"

d. "Good shot with that Abomination, you took out the foreign squadmate!"

and finally, with a nod to the BSNer that introduced this to me...
"Who needs Quarians?"

...and also, I'm joking (don't get all crazy bsn)

Reverting to English IS default for a lot of nations when they meet each other and don't understand each other's native tongue.NOT revering to English when several nationalities means and are to work/team/communicate together, is basically to leave someone out of the team.

Lol, such kind of topics are actually an improvement considering what we talk about in the English forums.
I also like the "Le dur chemin du loup solitaire" one. Ahh, should visit the French forums more often, to keep me from forgetting dat French.
Edit: Cyonan, you lied to me! It was not about terrorist Drell! They were just complaining that the Drell assassin with his skill set was more of a terrorist rather than an assassin. I demand compensation!

When you encountered people not speaking English, did you ask them to switch to English? If someone wants to talk, which is rare anyway, we usually try to work out what language is the easiest for everyone (which, most of the time, is indeed English), and sometimes there's even a mix: I understand French but suck at speaking it, so the other guy speaks French and I speak English or German, as those two are the languages most understood in the lobbies I've been in and that I also speak.
EDIT: mixing also works in business, I had a business meeting where everyone spoke in their native tongue, as everyone understood the others' language but were more comfortable speaking their own.

You should be whatever you want to be about that(though I'd not expect a lot of people to care if you do pick offended).
They gather here writing English because this is the English site. If they wanted to write French they'd goto the French site, though occasionally we do get people here posting in a language other than English.
It's the same when I played WoW. Most people on my server spoke English because I was playing on an English server. When the group finder threw me into one of the three Spanish servers, oddly enough those people spoke Spanish.
We were not defaulting to English, we were defaulting to what our servers were defined as.
Whenever I play a game that doesn't have language specific servers I usually get about a 50/50 split on English and Mandarin(At least I'm assuming it's Mandarin).
Mass Effect is actually the unique one in that I usually get 99% of people not saying anything.

I'm thinking one solution could be like you see in some MMOs - you have different servers for different languages. So if you don't want or can't speak English, you can log into a server for your home country.
While I wouldn't mind getting hooked up with people closer to me for lag reasons, I can not see why this would be necessary for language reasons. Talking is not important in this game. It's helpful, and often fun, but not necessary. So why would you want to limit the number of available lobbies just because you might not understand the random chatting in a few of the lobbies you run into?

I'm not saying I would necessarily want it, only that it could be a possible solution if people want to speak their language even if it means leaving some of the team out.Ferus37 wrote...

Sure, but why segregate the community? It'll just make it harder to find a game, especially in less widely used languages.
When I end up in a lobby with loud Russians, for instance, I just turn the volume low enough that I can't make it out (but high enough that I can hear Banshees). It just becomes a low background drone.
Frankly, I do this for the English speakers sometimes too. There are times when I'd actually prefer not understanding what they're saying, if you know what I mean...

So how should I know that one is supposed to be in English and the other not, to the point of it being offensive to believe they both are English?
It becomes offensive the moment you realize ME3 MP is not per se an English game and you still insist everyone should be speaking English. Which I guess happened before you started this thread.

I find it more offensive (or to be more exact: rude) to keep speaking a language that some in your team do not understand, and thus leaving them out.

Of course you would default to what the server were defined as. But it's never defined as English forum - it's just IS English. Same as my game - when I start ME3 up, everything is in English. So how should I know that one is supposed to be in English and the other not, to the point of it being offensive to believe they both are English?
But it is defined as an English forum.
Go clear your browser cache and reload social.bioware.com or load it in a different browser you have not logged into this site on. You'll notice that it asks you which lanaguage you want.
Mass Effect 3 also allows for you to play in multiple languages.
If you assume that everyone is going to default to one specific language then make posts about how you wish everyone would speak that specific language because you find it annoying when you can't understand their conversation you should not be surprised to get hate based on that, regardless of the language chosen.
I imagine you'd find it kind of ridiculous if I made a post like your OP only switching out English for French(and not just because I don't speak French =P), would you not?
