So how should I know that one is supposed to be in English and the other not, to the point of it being offensive to believe they both are English?

It becomes offensive the moment you realize ME3 MP is not per se an English game and you still insist everyone should be speaking English. Which I guess happened before you started this thread.

Oh, please BSN, don't fail me yet again! Why are we making an elephant out of a fly? OP did not insist that everyone would speak English, they said they wished it so it could be understandable for them. The same way I wish everyone spoke my native language but alas, such is life.

P.S. What I do enjoy is when playing and talking in English with other non-English players and everyone curses instinctively in their native language. So fun to learn curses in every language!

I didn't think you were offensive and I didn't intend to be either, quoting Ashen just succinctly summed up how I feel about it. It doesn't bug me, although I understand. I guess it's just a casual and impersonal enough thing, random lobbies and such, that I don't expect communication.

But it is defined as an English forum.

Go clear your browser cache and reload social.bioware.com or load it in a different browser you have not logged into this site on. You'll notice that it asks you which lanaguage you want.

Yes, I realised that, so I edited my post. You still have not touched my point.

Cyonan wrote...
If you assume that everyone is going to default to one specific language then make posts about how you wish everyone would speak that specific language because you find it annoying when you can't understand their conversation you should not be surprised to get hate based on that, regardless of the language chosen.

I imagine you'd find it kind of ridiculous if I made a post like your OP only switching out English for French(and not just because I don't speak French =P), would you not?

Not if French was the "lingua franca" as English is today, no. If it were, then I would probably have made that post before you, as I did now.

And, no, I do not see that anything in my post should have me expect or tolerate "hate". People have been able to communicate to me their disagreement or what the misunderstanding might come from in a perfectly civil manner. Hate or teenage wankery is not something I should neither expect nor tolerate.

Wow.

If you want to be able to participate in conversations other than English, then learn the language.

How arrogant.

What? Are you serious? I am supposed to learn every European language out there in case I come into a PUG that speaks German/Italian/Polish/Finnish? That's insane. I'm Norwegian, and I woud view it as common courtesy to speak English when you have people in your team that you don't know where are from. But maybe I have that view because I work with colleagues from England, Scottland, Australia, New Zealand and other countries, and am used to English being a working language.

The logic meaning "nobody can do what I can't do" is just so surprising here... and soooo possible at large scale, you know ?

Either you learn the other languages OR (OR, meaning YOU HAVE THE CHOICE !!!) you don't care and play the game.  But if what you don't like is you don't understand, then you must be angry about your own incompetence or not angry at all.

Let people speak what they want, PUGs is not your own dictatorship. When you will be master of the world, it will be an other matter.

And I sorta agree with that part, but I don't agree that those who won't or can't speak English should relegate to private lobbies.

Ha, ha..................... just the other night I was on with 3 Spanish speaking players. I thought it was great when they would say " El Bruto" or call me " El MadDog". Real fun that was, I only understood the cuss words and a few words I picked up from my vacation on Malli.

A friend of mine I introduced to the game pretty recently was wandering around gold at, like 4 in the morning when all the Russians are on, with his brand new volus adept (at like N7 35 or something so he was having fun getting constantly kicked) and he dropped into a lobby of 3 Russians. Didn't understand a word they were saying so it was just russianrussianrussianrussianVOLUSrussianrussianrussian. Apparently they were really excited to have a volus, especially when he turned out to be pretty damn good at volus. They bumped the difficulty to platinum and got a couple of extractions. I think one of them even ended up friending him. Even though I'm pretty sure the only the words they ever understood between each other were "volus" and "banshee".

I don't mind people speaking whatever language they want, so long as they don't do generally obnoxious crap over the mic, stuff that would be obnoxious in any language. I do try not to speak too much in those lobbies where the primary language isn't English because I don't want them to feel obligated to speak English (and in a lot of countries it is pretty standard to switch to English really, really fast). I always feel guilty when they speak English to accomodate me because I know that I can be a chatterbox and then I just start confusing them when I start saying really weird slangy stuff really fast (sorry serran >.<). I would speak in their language if I could, but even in my best foreign languages, well, I always got my worst grades in the speaking part of the rubric... by far...

What do you guys think of people who speak a non-English language in a public PUG? I wish everyone would speak English in public ones, and have private teams for your own language. And I am not a native English speaker, but it's annoying to get my headset and mic on, only to hear enthusiastic and constant debates going on in German/Italian/Finnish without me being able to participate, contribute or understand what they are talking about.

@OP, I think part of the miscommunication here is cultural. You come from a northern European culture, where English is the lingua franca. (On NPR today they reported that English instruction in Northern Europe is the best of non-native speaking countries because there English is seen as a tool for global communication.)  It is therefore common and accepted as polite in your culture for you to to switch to English when communicating with people from different countries.

Here in the US English is the default language, but insisting that others use it is considered ignorant/not politically correct. (One of my favorite urban myths is that a Congressman introduced a bill to make English the "official language of the USA" because "If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me!") Thus, Americans' knee jerk reaction when we see someone "demanding" that non-English speakers speak English is to deride the person as an self-centered provincial swine (ignoring the fact that you are not a native English speaker yourself). This explains the hostile reaction you encountered to your suggestion.

In non-English speaking countries outside of Northern Europe, English speaking ability may be poor to nonexistant. So, while I appreciate your consideration in switching to English for the benefit of other English speakers, I don't expect everyone in the world to share your ability/attitude. When I run into lobbies where the majority are speaking a language I don't know, I'll just roll with it. I've tried to learn at least "hello" and "thank you" in several languages so I can be friendly, but much of the game doesn't require a lot of talking.

I think it's great, go for it. There isn't any requirement to speak English to play ME3 multiplayer.

I don't care. I'll play with them and have no idea what they're saying, but that's fine.

The only time it has ever bothered me was once: I stumbled into a room with two Germans talking. Which was fine, no big deal. Until they started saying "Draaaagon...." in a very teasing manner. I didn't know what they meant by that, if they were making fun of me or trying to get me to engage in the conversation. I politely told them (in what little German I do know) that I couldn't speak German. They kept teasingly drawing out my name, so I left because that was creeping me right the heck out.

So, moral of story: if I say I can't speak your tongue, don't repeat my name over and over in a bizarre, teasing manner. Otherwise, you could sit there and recite your entire history in your native language and I would not care one bit. Go for it.

I do wish I could mute it, if only because I find it distracting when I can't understand what someone is saying and they talk a lot. It's not offensive, by any means, but I have no desire to listen to what amounts to inane babble due to my lack of knowledge of the language.

Of course, I'd like to be able to mute many English-speakers too.

The worst are the people who have never heard of 'push-to-talk' and have their mic too close to their speakers. I don't like having to hear the entire game from their perspective on top of mine. Or constant laboured breathing because playing videogames is exhausting.

OP- BSN is oversensitive. That's why they got so hostile.

As I posted, without trying hard to be extra offended, I think if other squadmates get what I'm doing and I get what they're doing, it's ok if there is a language barrier.

Me too, for some reason I find it extremely distracting when people are talking non-stop about things not happening in a match. I seriously can't stay focused on the game when people start talking about real life.

They can be talking about the game, but still be annoying if they're a non-stop motormouth. I entered a Gold PUG with two folks without mics, and the host with one, and by Wave 3 I greatly regreted having mine on. He was just non-stop talking and asking how I build this character and that character. I engaged in conversation with him a bit at first, you know, to be nice. But once the fighting got intense, I stopped. I remember at one point during a wave where he got sync-killed and just went on and on talking like nothing mattered, and apparently he asked me a question. He asked it again, and my response was, "I really don't care right now, just trying to not get f-ing killed like you due to not paying attention, thankyouverymuch."

He apparently didn't take the hint. I mean, yeah, it was a fast Gold PUG where we all extracted and was very efficient, but the two silent folks immediately bolted afterwards. I can't blame them. I stayed for a few minutes mostly out of trying not to be rude, as he was STILL talking to (read: at) me and I didn't just want to bail mid-sentence. But Jesus Christ, nobody wants to talk about builds and biotic explosion detonators and a bunch of other stuff non-stop through the entire match.

I finally managed to thrust in an "Oh, I gotta go, thanks for the game, bye" and left. He's probably still sitting there talking. Image IPB

Eh, was all right. I actually have enjoyed PUGing a lot during the holiday break, when a lot of my friends list is offline and traveling. Been an adventure and helped make me a better player, learning better how to clutch waves and whatnot.

But yes, I am too nice sometimes. I am easily cornered into conversational entrapment like that because I don't want to be rude, you know. But wow. I hope I never come off as nearly that annoying to others. Image IPB

I met someone who made me wish I was better at telling people straight out to stop. I do enjoy talking about random things sometimes, and making fun of stuff in the game, but there is a limit. (Good grief I hope I don't overstep that limit as much as I fear I do.)

I ran into these two guys on mic and turn mine on, because they sound fun. And the first match they were fun, but then one of them got disconnected and didn't return. The guy who was left decided to play one of the characters with Sabotage, and proceeded to call every single sabotaged Geth in the entire match "my child", and every single time one of them was killed he would go "you killed my child". Okay, kinda funny the first two times, but after 47 times I was ready to start shooting him instead of enemies.
I am far too polite, so I tried hinting to him that enough was enough, instead of straight out telling him. Didn't work, so I just stopped talking altogether. I may need to grow some nads. :P

Retarded, predictably anti-American reply. Guy said his first language isn't English -- does that sound like an American? Even then, are Americans the only English speakers in the world? Why is it that anti-Americans think Americans are the only ethnocentric people in the world, when ethnocentrism is a trait ALL humans share?

/antiantiamericanrant

Honestly, when I'm playing a PUG, I'd much rather play with people with a language I don't understand than with some annoying **** whose bulls**t I can perfectly understand. Obviously, I'd rather play with someone without a mic at all. Better still, someone with a mic who knows how to use it and not be annoying. Which is such an endangered species on PUGs.
