I do wish I could mute it, if only because I find it distracting when I can't understand what someone is saying and they talk a lot. It's not offensive, by any means, but I have no desire to listen to what amounts to inane babble due to my lack of knowledge of the language.

Of course, I'd like to be able to mute many English-speakers too.

The worst are the people who have never heard of 'push-to-talk' and have their mic too close to their speakers. I don't like having to hear the entire game from their perspective on top of mine. Or constant laboured breathing because playing videogames is exhausting.

Me too, for some reason I find it extremely distracting when people are talking non-stop about things not happening in a match. I seriously can't stay focused on the game when people start talking about real life.

They can be talking about the game, but still be annoying if they're a non-stop motormouth. I entered a Gold PUG with two folks without mics, and the host with one, and by Wave 3 I greatly regreted having mine on. He was just non-stop talking and asking how I build this character and that character. I engaged in conversation with him a bit at first, you know, to be nice. But once the fighting got intense, I stopped. I remember at one point during a wave where he got sync-killed and just went on and on talking like nothing mattered, and apparently he asked me a question. He asked it again, and my response was, "I really don't care right now, just trying to not get f-ing killed like you due to not paying attention, thankyouverymuch."

He apparently didn't take the hint. I mean, yeah, it was a fast Gold PUG where we all extracted and was very efficient, but the two silent folks immediately bolted afterwards. I can't blame them. I stayed for a few minutes mostly out of trying not to be rude, as he was STILL talking to (read: at) me and I didn't just want to bail mid-sentence. But Jesus Christ, nobody wants to talk about builds and biotic explosion detonators and a bunch of other stuff non-stop through the entire match.

I finally managed to thrust in an "Oh, I gotta go, thanks for the game, bye" and left. He's probably still sitting there talking. Image IPB

LOL Dragon, I shouldn't leave you out in the wilderness to play with randoms anymore!B) I admire your patience I would have bailed so damn fast!

Eh, was all right. I actually have enjoyed PUGing a lot during the holiday break, when a lot of my friends list is offline and traveling. Been an adventure and helped make me a better player, learning better how to clutch waves and whatnot.

But yes, I am too nice sometimes. I am easily cornered into conversational entrapment like that because I don't want to be rude, you know. But wow. I hope I never come off as nearly that annoying to others. Image IPB

I just use good old reliable my phone is ringing I have to leave or sorry someones at the door I have to go. Don't want to be annoyed by some random willingly for 20 plus mins, just don't have the patience.

Wouldn't mind a couple cursing Russian Destroyers and a Pygmy Volus screaming.

But anything but little British kids, they're more annoying than American ones... and that's saying A LOT.

I wish I dropped into lobbies with more non-English speakers. If I don't understand a word of it, I enjoy their conversations. In fact, I once played with a Chinese player and I wish he (...she?) wasn't trying to speak English, because hearing "GET TO THE EXTRACTION ZONE" ten times was torture on my ears.

I don't mind for the most part....most of the time i prefer mic-less sessions. Sometimes i'm just not in the mood to hear alot of laughing and cackling or annoying chatter in any language. Nothing against anybody that does that, but certain times (especially in the morning) i'm just not in the mood for all of that..

You're so right! The entire world should adopt English as an official and primary language or get the **** out!

If only we had universal translators and omni-tools in real life just like they do in the games.

Everyone is mocking the remark from the OP.

I think we should be using the language that the most people KNOW. And yes, because it is considered an international language, that is almost always English. (Second I'd guess is French or Spanish.) But it isn't simply "everyone should just use English always".

If three Russian people are speaking russian, and an Englishman joins? Well, do the Russian-speakers know English? Then yes switch, because then FOUR people can understand what is going on.
If you have two Russians, a Spaniard, and a Frenchman, none of which spreak each others' languages, but speak English? Then YES switch to English, because FOUR PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND.

It's not "oh English is superior, everyone should use it, we shouldn't have to dirty our mouths with your gabble-babble". Assuming that is what people asking this means is strawmanning. It just ENDS UP being English because that is the language MOST WIDESPREAD.

BSN. BSN is an example. How many threads you see saying "sorry for my English, it is my second/third language"? (Double points if they are then MOCKED for their spelling, grammar, syntax). How many posts do you see from people saying "I'm from Denmark/Germany/Ukraine/etc, so my connection tends to be poor" yet are still speaking in English? I know I see a lot.

....now how many threads do you see in French? Spanish? Any of the slavic or eastern-asian languages? Really? Any? If you did see one, did it last very long? Did people continue to converse in it? Did nobody come by with an "ENGLISH MUTHA****A, DO YOU SPEAK IT"? The fact that so much of BSN acts this way as a whole, but then comes here and strawmans anyone asking for UNDERSTANDABLE speaking (let alone BSN's demand for GRAMMAR) is what really disgusts me. Hate is alright if its you, is it?

It's not about language-hate. It is about convenience. The purpose of language is COMMUNICATION, and if you cannot communicate, that defeats the whole point.

As for if those three theoretical Russians do not speak English (or one or two do not), well, that Englishman can leave for another lobby then. Matter of convenience. Even if only one doesn't know English, that still means only three communicating, and in a SECOND LANGUAGE their accent may have difficulty handling (thus leaving the Englishman confused anyway). Just find another lobby with English-spreakers, it's not like the language is rare - or suck it up and play a great game with yoru friends across the seas instead of acting like a douchebag.

▲ Identifying and using a common language is all well and good, but assuming that everyone speaks English and then expecting them to learn if they don't is just plain irrational. At least, that's the vibe I get from the topic creator and most other individuals who complain about players who don't speak one's own primary language. I go into most multiplayer games expecting to hear English because I have my settings set to seek out the nearest games first, but I don't throw a fit when the internet decides that I should play with a host from somewhere else or someone from somewhere else happens to be dropped into a game that I am hosting. Well okay, I lied. I do throws fits, but it's because the lag is usually bad, not because I don't speak a mutual language.

Meh. I use English on the few occasions i play w/ my mic on, but I usually still curse in Korean. Habit and all that. If I ever ended up in a lobby with other korean or chinese speakers though, I dont see a problem with using those, even if there happened to be non speaker on the team. Honestly, if you don't want to deal w/ others speaking a foreign language, why not just take iff your head set?

Also, @OP, your post didnt seem offensive to me, but it did seem to assume that the others un your lobby knew how to speak english. Have you considered that they may not? Or am i missing the point? Are you saying that everyone who can't should learn, or just that they should if they can? Am slightly confuse...

Perhaps they feel the same about you speaking English? Since this game is sold worldwide, I think your desire for one and only one language to be used is highly unrealistic and also somewhat insulting.

I find it more distracting when I CAN UNDERSTAND the most random thing people are saying. I can easily turn off all the volume from voice chat with the the help of my headset, but I enjoy listening/talking to other people, makes the game feel more co-op. I'm not a native English speaker, so I understand if people are more comfortable with their native language than they are trying to express themselves in English. Let's admit it, some people can be jerks and make fun of someone with broken English.

I don't mind if the lobby is filled with non-English speaking people.

What I do mind is that damn magical gravitational force that keeps pulling you back from your intended position for about 4-5 times until you finally hit some kind of cover and let the lag sort itself through. This almost always coincides with non-English lobbies.

The thing that really bothers me is that Bioware didn't include a mute option. There are days when i join lobbies and the conversations are just plain stupid. As for foreign languages, well it's not their fault there's no mute option for me to use.

Unrealistic, definitely. Insulting? Why find it insulting that some people desire the ability to communicate with anyone in the world, no pesky communication barriers to get in the way?

well me and mt team8s are using teamspeak, however if i have something to say to a random guy i will do that in english. because i find it rather rude if somebody is droping my tag on their language.

it often happens when i play battlefield on german servers, but still.

I dare to say that OP is plain arrogant. I highly doubt a couple of friends give a damn whether he/she understands what they are talking about. It's their RIGHT to speak in any language they want and English being internationally known doesn't change a thing.
That kind of thinking would limit non-English speakers to private lobbies... and that is ****** up.

Everyone seems to be under the impression the OP is forcing their language on everyone, but English isn't their native language either. They could have worded their post better, but actually what angers me is how BSN is getting so up and arms about this when you mock other users for the syntax, and BSN isn't receiving of non-english forum threads.

You speak english and I understand.
Why can't you understand when I speak french ?

You talk in english, I talk in french and everyone understands. Just learn to communicate with other people.

Some can speak 3 or 4 languages. Why can't english speakers learn something else too ?

Personally, if I enter in a lobby with two or three Russians speaking Russian, I really don't mind and don't see how or why they should speak english just to make themselves understandable for me. It's not rude or a problem, and no one should be offended by that.

But I can see your point of view. Since the game's original language is English and you know it's more likely you'll be understood when speaking english, it would be a matter of politeness, to speak English.

I do this sometimes, when I'm hosting some games or I'm playing with other friend who know to speak and understand english. And in my experience playing on public games (and not just Mass Effect Multiplayer), a lot of people do this just when necessary: phrases like, "behind you", "hang on, I'm coming", are very used.

they can always be polite and smart( both uncommon) and shut the mics off, in case its a console like the 360 and its a kinect, they can just get the hell out of the lobby, annoying echo

There are other means for communication that are far better tha broadcasting it to the lobby when you're talking to one player. Like TS3 or Skype for PC.

That's how they feel about english? Maybe, but many countries have english as a second language.

I don't mind, though, since PC has next to none using the voice chat in-game anyway.
