Native language:  English (I bet you saw that one coming)
Second language: French

Okay to all you people who can speak many languages what is your secret?

I speak English, so I should be fluent in most Europen languages since English overlaps with:

Greek
Latin based languages
Celtic
Gaelic
Nordic languages
Germanic languages

English covers at least 2/3 of Europe easily.
Yet I can just about manage a conversation in French. Shamefull really.

Lol. No you won't be fluent in those languages, nor should you be. German and Latin based languages are wholly disimilar from English. Beyond a couple of words which are pronounced in a similar fashoin the grammer is entirely different. If you attempt to transpose English grammer on another language you will fail and fail hard. French, Spanish and Itallian both have a latin base, yet are entirely different, although some core aspects of the gramer and sentence construction are similar, which makes it easier to grasp, but they remain very seperate languages.

My current languages.

1) English (my native language)
2) Spanish (something I've been exposed to since I was young)
3) French and German. (fairly basic. But I know enough to get around in the countries)

Your name...

Tagalog, but more comfortable speaking in English. Sorry, sosyalerong frog.

Two mentions of the name. I'm so curious, but I have a feeling it's not something you could safely translate.

Haha, I never paid attention to his name before. I'm not gonna translate, but it really isn't that bad at all. It just made sense now.

Ze German, learned French, English (obviously), Arabic, Letzebuergisch. Austrian and Swiss German are no problem (mostly).
I mostly understand the sense what people from the western neighbouring countries of Germany want to say. Basic Italian and Spanish. A grasp of scandinavian languages when they're written.
A couple of Polish and Czech words, some Russian words.

My native language is German.

I also speak English, Dutch and a little French ;)

I do understand a little Italian and Spanish, but it's not like I speak those languages fluently.

Are Scandinavians born with English dictionaries or something?

Free and high-quality education system.

I feel bad for the muricans (and everyone) that have to pay for their education. They may have the motivation to study, but without money they're not getting anywhere.

In Sweden, (maybe Finland as well?) the government actually pays all students a sum of money, equvalent to about $150-160 every month, as long as they go to school.

Finnish students also can get qovernment funding for attending high school or equivalent institute as long as their parents don't get 60k a year (IIRC).

Australian English.

I say this because we have weird names/slang for things and sometimes people don't understand... :).

I know it doesn't have much to do with anything here, but for a variety of reasons over the Christmas Holidays I have had playing over and over in the back of my head:

"Mr. Simpson sir, please! Disparaging the Boot is a Bootable offense!"

English, but please never ask me to proof read anything for you. I understand comma splicing, and run on sentences, etc..., but yes I have learned that most everyone on the planet, and even Volos have better grammar skills than I do. I know a tiny bit of French, and Arabic. A phrase here, or there, but know nothing. Mainly just the alphabets, and special characters, and enough to try and be polite. An apologetic please help me I know nothing, but still really need el bano:D Yup bathroom in Spanish. Most useful phrase I think where ever you are:D

It's not free. The tax payers are paying for it, which makes sense given that most in Scandinavia fork over 50% of their income to the government. It does work but only because the countries are so small and sparesly populated.
