Our Mabari war dog takes up a slot in our character party and I was wondering what people were deciding to do with it. On the one hand it's a useful companion that does amusing things. On the other hand it's not another fully fleshed out humanoid NPC. I haven't gotten too far into this game yet, but I found his skill tree to be quite small and his equipment slots to be few.
Are you taking your hound with you in your adventures? or will you be leaving him behind and taking someone else. I'm torn between this decision as I find a talking companion far more entertaining and fun. But I really do like the concept of having a pet attack dog.

i switched out the doggie for Leilana.
Much nicer to be able to interact with party members.

Only reason i'd keep the dog is the funny chats between him and Morigan or Alister,

On my first playthrough of the game I think I am going to keep him, then in subsequent playthroughs I will not feel guilty never using him again. Besides, as a human noble he has been with me from the start and I would feel bad ditching him.

My first playthrough as a human noble warrior (see avatar) will keep her mabari all the way from start to finish -- both for RP reasons, and because I love animals. The devs said he's potentially one of the best party members, though if he really only has a few talents I'm a bit concerned he'll fall behind at the high levels which would be a shame.

Depends a bit, I'd have to see him for myself first. He is, like many have said, not a fully fledged character so you're potentially lacking some interesting story parts if you take him with you. But on the other hand dogs are great and fun creatures to have around. Then again you could also take Ranger and get some wolves...

where do you find the dog?

It would be an easily solved problem if we could mod the party limit. I would love to have all or most of the companions available for the added interactions.

You can swap them in and out, leaving different ones at camp and taking the most important people at each quest. Just return to camp between...and then select your crew based on what you're doing/where you're going. sometimes the dog is a good addition, sometimes not as helpful. For schlepping around in the wild, he's nice to have along.

At least I think that's how it works?

After a little research it is indeed possible to break the party limit and have as many companions as you like out at the same time, the only (biggest) downside is that the extra companions don't show up in the character portraits on the side of the screen, everything else is available, skills, inventory, control (tho you have to click on them individually instead of clicking on portrait).

*Spoiler!!!*
Your dog only has plot-specific speech/involvement if you take it along with you for the "Broken Circle"' quest.
The part where u enter the Fade.

The dog's cute. Unfortunately, his abilities, especially those which aid tanking is sadly lacking in comparison to Alistar or Sten, not to mention Shale who's just about the best tank/crowd controller one can find.

I am curious to see how he scales. Are you guys just stacking him like a tank? Str, Con, Dex?

There's supposed to be a second chance if you download "Return To Ostagar."
If you missed that, or simply don't want to pay for it (and I completely understand, I'm citing the DLC description, not firsthand knowledge) then I can't help. I don't even know how to use the console.

I'm going back on my work laptop on this job and replaying the game. I think when I do my dwarven commoner playthrough I'm going to keep dog all the way. Cause it will be a no mage play through. I'm thinking Dog, Sten and than who ever fills in at the moment for the game. THough was debating keeping morgan cause she is an evil chick like my Thug Male Dwarth, he might accept her as the only mage in the party.
