Am I nuts for saying DA2 has a better story than DA:O?

Nobody has mentioned the elephant in the room so....

Playing a Mage!Hawke in DA2 makes no sence whatsoever. That alone destroys any credabilty DA2's story may have had, at least for me.

In DA:O there was a somewhat logical reason to be playing a mage. In DA2 there isn't which leaves a plot hole so big the Death Star can fly through it with room to spare.

The opinion you state is not a universally accepted fact. I personally feel that DA2 makes the *most* sense for Mage!Hawkes. You're an apostate with magic on both sides of the family. You're trying to gain enough wealth and status to protect yourself from templar scrutiny. The seemingly incidental things you do along the way - doing the odd job for Javaris, rescuing/condemning a bunch of mages - turn out to have tremendous import later, but that's the way life plays out. You never know which of 1000 decisions you make one day will turn out to have lasting consequences.

You aren't 100% wrong, however. Playing as a pro-templar Mage!Hawke doesn't make a lot of sense for players who do not like playing hypocrites... but I don't generally play pro-templar Hawkes of any class, so that's something that exists more in theory than in practice. In the pro-mage game I played, playing as a mage made perfect sense.

What I mean by not making any sence is if the PC is a mage almost nobody notices the fact the PC is a mage. It's just as bad if you have Beathan and/or Anders in the party.

There's only a handful of occastions where being a mage or having a mage present makes a diffrence. Considering the whole premise of the Mages vs Templars its not logical for them not to notice you. Then again with all the blood mages running around in plain sight as well.....

Bioware really dropped the ball maybe not as badly as another game I could mention but when you sit down and think about the lore srounnding mages in Thdas, they pretty much toss it over their left sholder while writing DA2.

So as far as I'm concerned playing a mage or even having a mage in your party at times isn't the most locgial choice. DA2's story has more than a few plot holes.

The obliviousness of Kirkwall's templars is evidence of a rushed game rather than a plot hole. There was a plot that involved templars pursuing Mage!Hawke at one point, but it got cut. The overall storyline still makes sense, even if it doesn't tie up every loose end it could have tied up.

Is it really in anyone's best interests to quibble about realism when rogues walk around picking locked chests in their owners' presence? Why aren't the rogues arrested for theft? Why don't warriors with the templar spec have to chug lyrium potions to access their abilities?

Kirkwall's templars are oblivious, but they're no more oblivious than DA:O's. Granted, the templars in the Circle Tower probably got the memo that your Mage!Warden was off limits, but the ones in Denerim should have perked up when they saw spells flying right and left. And you could perform blood sacrifice on Wynne or even give her the blood mage specialization without so much as a raised eyebrow from her. How big is that plot hole, by your lights?

The way I figure it, Hawke was discreet in Act 1. He stuck to staff attacks in public or non-flashy spells. He kept his staff in a sleeve like an unstrung bow. In Act 2, he was on his way up the social ladder. He was an upstanding citizen and an associate of the viscount. A templar bringing charges against him would probably have to think very carefully about his career prospects. By Act 3, everybody knew Hawke was a mage, but he was also the Champion of Kirkwall. Meredith tells Hawke herself how much she'd like to toss Hawke in the Circle, but she doesn't do more than threaten. She doesn't dare. He did kill the Arishok, after all.

Nuts are generally healthy unless you are allergic to them.

Seriously, considering all the numerous DAO vs DA2 threads, I'd say the question posed by OP is rhetorical. Both plotlines have their advantages and disadvantages.

Of course you're not nuts. It's your opinion, and you're entitled to it.
