I have the 1.02a patch in my game and the difficulty level on easy.  In the Alienage or in the Market district the outcome is always the same now.  My entire party dies!  I call in the Dwarves to tank but it doesn't matter as they usually scatter all over with no way to control them and the darkspawn keep running the ogres in by the dozens.

I didn't have any of this problem before the darn 1.02a patch!!

Is anyone else having this problem?  I fairly experienced in the game now so I'm not a newby.  This is just overwealming on odds.  If I had the difficluty set higher then I would expect it to be harder, but my characters get damage inflicted faster than I can heal them wiht a health poulce.  The Hurleck General apparently has no cool down time for some of his nastyer spells unlike the mage I am using.

Anyone out there have this much difficulty?  If not how did you combat it?

Your party is losing to hurlocks that all die in 1 hit? :S Do you have some kind of mod installed that boost their hit points? Do you have area of effect spells or talents? If so, they should be readily dispensed by them.

Got a Rogue? HOLD the party someplace where they have a long LOS. Stealth the Rogue and edge up to where you ****just**** have a LOS to the nearest ogre. Use a bow with a called shot (Arrow of Slaying, Shattering, Crippling, etc.) that hits or it doesn't, either way you unStealth. Hopefully that ONE Ogre will start to chase after you. (If he doesn't sting him with another called shot.) Run back to the party and when the Ogre comes around the corner, you have 4-to-1 odds on him. This is time consuming, but success is inevitable -- AND you don't have to use any reinforcements.

Alienage

If you have 2 Mages, each of which has at least one AoE spell (Blizzard is _real_ good; so is Inferno. Tempest is okay.) Get to the gates before the Ogre breaks through. Target the Ogre with the AoE spells. Non-Mages use missile weapons. Fireballs also help. The darkspawn near the gate take continuous combined damage, but the gate itself does not. The longer you deliver damage while the gate is still intact, the easier it is to beat the wounded darkspawn that burst through. Concentrate on bigger ds (Emissaries, Ogres, Alphas) and archers (those can whittle you down if you don't kill them quick). This is a good place to use the Elven archers or the Mages (because the others insist on charging into your AoE spells). The longer you keep the gate up, the weaker the ds become, so make sure you don't let an AoE lapse without casting another in its place. And if _both_ Mages can cast Fireball, that's great for holding the gateway: 1, 2, 1, 2,.... Time it just right and the ds can't make any headway out of the maelstrom -- where they slowly erode away to nothing. Emphasis: Blizzard is a fantastic spell for this kind of work. Not only does it inflict continuous damage, it keeps knocking enemies off their feet and even sometimes freezing a target. And anything that keeps the targets in the AoE, the better.

Did you tell the elves to stay and defend their homes? That gives you another set of archers to use. they can't handle any damage, but they can take out those one shot hurlocks.

If your main tank is a 2 hander, it helps to put him in Inter-something mode where he can't be stunned. Then he can just go to town on the General.

Also, call the mages to help you instead. they do some nice damage, I used them on the dragon on this last playthrough but thats because I've convinced the Dark Legion uber dwarves to help me in all the rest of the battles.

What I did: Me, as a caster with blizzard and inferno. Wynne: Healer Allistair: Tank +4th member.. probably leiana... yeah, it was her. I immediately went on the stairs, put alistair in front of gates, cast earthquake with Wynne since its instant, then blizzard just outside the gates followed by inferno and fireball. In a matter of moments, it was boss vs occasional spawning mobs. Dont remember the boss there, it was a caster I think. Anyway, I threw a cone of cold occasionally, other than that dealt with spawns. I also had rejev and heal, so I let the mages rejev each other then when they are both low do mass rejev and back up with healing if needed.

I think there are three keys to winning any fight in the game:

1- have a tank with shield and shield wall and mastery. He won't knockback and deflect lots of missiles. This means he'll get less damage, will always be ready to drink a potion and deflect attacks. I also open precise hitting and only use shield pummel and bash as skills now and then.
2- have a healer. wynne just does this greatly.
3- have CC=Crowd Control. Casters are great for that. Force Shield, Cone of Cold, Earth Quake, Crushing Prison, Petrify.. they are all great. Force Shield can also help you to save your tank when you are out of heals or when grabbed etc.

between fights, the priority will change. For example, high dragon doesnt require crowd control, although occasional cone of cold helps. But it's very tank heavy and some healing helps greatly.
for lots of minion fights like dwarf carta, you need at least one of the above in a very good manner. A tank that holds everyone swiftly, a healer that outheals damage, or enough CC to take enemies easily.

PS: This is the alienage by the way.

Thanks to all for the advice. I still wonder if something changed after the latest patch though. The last two times I have been through the alienage there were far fewer ogres and darkspawn. In fact, now they just keep coming across the bridge and this has got to be a tenfold increase from the last two times I have been in this battle. This is why I'm concerned. I literally cannot kill them fast enough. It isn't just the one hits either, it consists of hurlucks genlocks in addition to at least five or six of the ogres who don't kill easily anymore.
Any thoughts from you guys?
Thanks

sound like what it was when i played on 1.0, so the number of monsters isn't patch related and i didn't have any major troubles on hard with those. sure i did reload a few times and it wasn't until the tower gate that i had to call in allies to support me.

To the OP: With 4 ranged characters I didn't have the problems you mentioned, but in the final battle with the Archdemon only one of the 4 will hit something and most of the time they won't do a thing. Casting spells just doesn't work and arrows are not fired. I just waited until the Archdemon was on his final platform and killed him off there.
