I recently purchased and downloaded JE for the Mac from Gametree. It basically works fine, and I am enjoying the game, but I have an irritating graphics problem that takes the edge off the game's very pretty visuals.
I am seeing "dirt on my windscreen" in the form of blocky patterns of dark squares and rectangles. The pattern varies in shape and density, but it is always present. Going from the gameplay screen to the menus and back will often change the pattern. I have googled frantically (that is how I found this forum) and tried many different combinations of graphics settings in the game without being able to fix it. My iMac is running a ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, and in all other respects seems to handle the game quite happily. These screen shots show what I'm talking about:

Can anyone point me in the direction of a fix?

I now feel like a clown. I have solved my own problem, in a flash of reduced stupidity, immediately after posting the above. I had found a reference to a bug in ATI cards where trash would be placed on the screen if you selected Soft Shadows and Antialiasing. I had tried turning anti-aliasing off without success, and Soft Shadows was not offerred as an option in the Graphics Settings menu.
I also found a reference to editing the JadeEmpire.ini file, but that did not seem to work. Then the penny dropped. There are two copies of JadeEmpire.ini on my machine. There is one in the actual JE package in Applications (which does not seem to be used), but there is another in the JE Preferences directory. I was looking at the wrong one... It seems that regardless of the anti-aliasing setting, I have to turn off Soft Shadows by editing the .ini file in Preferences to avoid the trash-on-the-screen problem.
The .ini file you need to look at on a Mac is: ~/Library/Preferences/JadeEmpire Preferences/p_drive/User/Application Data/Jade Empire/JadeEmpire.ini
In that file, you need to find SoftShadows=1 and change it to SoftShadows=0
Posting this in case it proves useful to someone else.
